My old roommate is Chinese and she told me when she was little, her parents wrapped ribbons around her feet to sort of symbolize the old binding tradition. They didn't bind her feet though - they're fine. Her mother told her that girls are suppose to take smaller quieter steps than guys. Those pictures look scarey.
