I have a good time, I got the school to pay for a Shonen Jump subscription for my room and I also show Myazaki films to my class for class parties. I also have a bunch of 'how to draw manga' books. Lots of kids hang in my room after school to read manga, it rules.

That's great Big Grin Little things like that get other people into anime.. how lucky these kids are Smile

The kids in my school do...Wink
It's like watching chappelle's show in school. It may provide varying levels of entertainment, but it has no substance whatsoever in it. Sorry to burst everyone's bubbles, but anime has NO substance to it. It is empty...shallow, etc. Somewhat entertaining tho.

Well, the only anime I show are Ghibli/Myazaki films, and I take the time to discuss the themes and lessons presented in each film, so I think there is plenty of 'substance' in this case.

Now, with the manga, yah, that is more just for fun, but, I mean lots of kids books don't have much substance anyway. It isn't like I am just having an anime party in my room all the time, I do teach math, science, reading, history, art, etc... Smile

What you might be surprised to hear is that many language and reading specialists say that if it gets kids to read, you should use it. I have asked different specialists in my district what they think about me having manga in my room and they think it is a great idea. I often have kids who are from Mexico or another country and they are just not good english speakers and they never even want to pick up a book, but they will pick up the manga and read it like crazy, and that is a step in the right direction Smile.
Another thing you need to understand is that as an educator I am expected to have an educational purpose for almost EVERYTHING I do in my room. When I wanted to teach my kids chess, I had to draw up lesson plans and show how I was teaching kids more than just chess. I included stuff like algebra, history, literature, etc... Same with the anime, manga, and drawing books. It all has a purpose.Big Grin

(obviously you can tell I take a lot of pride in my work...Smile )

and to be fair I do agree that there IS plenty of anime that lacks substance.Cool But, that is true of almost any from of entertainment.
Wish my teachers had been like that. Not that I had bad teachers, not really, but none like you. Wink
By the way, it's true that there is plenty of anime and manga that lack substance but there's also plenty of anime and manga witha lot of substance. Many people might not agree with me but Witch Hunter Robin had a deep anti-racism message.
Lot's anime have some deep underling moral, or education theme. Some you have to dig deeper than others. As for teaching I think you are doing great rarnom. I bet the lesson plans have to be detailed even more as the grade levels go up. So much to learn and not enough time for most of it to sink in.
