  Hong Kong
Posted by: Tradewynd - 08-10-2003, 11:19 AM - Forum: Anime Discussion - Replies (8)

I wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the general forum, so if it's in the wrong place please move it to the appropriate forum. I am planning a trip to Hong Kong during the last week of February and I have some questions/seeking advice both from people who live in Hong Kong and for anyone who's ever been there before.

For people who have visited Hong Kong before, did you get hassled by customs on your way back in? I'm going to be buying some DVDs and VCDs while I'm there, and don't want customs siezing my stuff when I come back in. They've never seized anything that's been shipped to me from Hong Kong, but I would assume they're more strict when you bring stuff across in person. Technically you're aloud "to bring one knock off item of each type (i.e. one shirt, one pair of sunglasses, but not two shirts)" back with you from Hong Kong according to US customs, but whether HK DVDs are considered knock off or not is debatable, as the discs are legal in Hong Kong. I was also wondering since the stuff I'm buying is sold openly in Hong Kong, i.e. in malls during plain daylight, if that made it a legal Hong Kong good that I could legally import. I'm not worried about paying duty, you don't have to pay duty until you bring more than US$800 of goods back with you, and even at that point the duties won't kill me. So I guess my main question is, how do you get the stuff back to the states without it getting confiscated? Are there just some goods to avoid? Mailing the stuff back to myself isn't an option, as you can only mail US$200 back to yourself and forfeit the right to bring anything else back duty free.

For people living in Hong Kong, where are the places to buy HK DVDs and VCDs? I was planning on stocking up on stuff while I was there. From what I'm hearing, I can expect to pay about HK$35/disc for DVDs and less for VCDs, which would be awesome. I'm not really concerned about going into "shady" parts of town, but if certain places are more filled with pickpockets I'd like to know about it. Do street vendors and/or stores haggle more with big purchases, because when I come to buy, I come to BUY. I'd be looking for anime, AV, HK movies and Japanese movies and TV shows. Any recommendations on the best places to go would be greatly appreciated. I've also been told it's a LOT cheaper to go to China to buy this stuff. Would it be worth it for me to buy a one time visa to go to China to buy stuff there instead of places in Hong Kong? And if so, where would be the best place reasonably close to Hong Kong to go? My DVD player can play VCD, SVCD, NTSC, PAL and all regions so format of discs is not an issue.

I'd also be looking for advice on some of the best things to do while I'm in Hong Kong. I'm going to all of the tourist things, like Ocean Park, riding the Star Ferry, taking the tram up Victoria Peak, Hong Kong Museum of History, HK Museum of Art, Po Lin Monastary, etc. I don't want to just do tourist stuff though. If there are any amusement parks other than Ocean Park in or around Hong Kong I'd appreciate the info. I could also really use some advice on non touristy stuff to do. Like best places to see HK movies in theaters, info or links to theater performances, info on any *ahem* gentlemen's establishments or just anything else cool in general to do.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me out at all.

  Orginal Artwork
Posted by: morgorath - 08-10-2003, 10:03 AM - Forum: Anime Discussion - No Replies

Hey Guys and Girls I have got a huge favor to ask of all you artist... I am looking for some Orginal "ANime or Manga" Artwork that you have either hand drawn or made is something like Photoshop... There is a reason to me asking but for those who wish to know please ask in PM just to let you guys know I will not use any of your art work in any way with out asking first... good manners start at home...Big Grin

ANyways there is also one little catch this can not and I repeat can not be related to any series... so please don't post your pictures of Goku, Naru, or any other famous anime people. The only way those could be used in what I am shooting for is if they fall under the Fair Use Rule of the United States Copyright Act of 1976. That means it has to be a parody of some sort so if you drew a picture of say Ranma going Super Sajien that would fly. CAtch my drift... THAnks and I can't wait to see your art work...

How long after USA release until import with dub?
Posted by: Cowhunter - 08-10-2003, 10:00 AM - Forum: Anime Discussion - Replies (5)

anyone have any idea how long it usually is before the import versions have english voices after they are released in the USA. Mainly i am looking at His and Her Circumstances which is fully released in US on september 30, 2003. anyone have and speculation as to the time it will be releases in HK with english dub. Is it usually so many months after or does it depend on popularity of the series?

  New Search Options
Posted by: Schultz - 08-10-2003, 09:15 AM - Forum: News/Announcements - Replies (9)

The Search page has been greatly revamped.. You can now search by Genre, along with Searching for Average ratings for certain items..

One thing right now is the Genre search looks for Exact Genre's so mean if an item has
Action, Adventure it will only be returned if you select Action and Adventure not if you select either of them.. If enough users want this i can change it so you have an option of 'And' or "Or" selection like the Name does..

Update: I implemented this change.. The Genre searching now works like this..

If an item has Action, Adventure, Comedy and you select
Action, Adventure and click the All selection it will return everything with Action and Adventure .. so this even includes if items have other selections also.. So make the genre search more usable. so you don't have to know the exact genre.

Dont know if this is the right forum, but I cant post this in "Requests", because it isnt one. Its about the Requests themselves. I was about to purchase FLCL when I saw youre sold out. Im assuming youll restock that. So I wanted to know, is there any specific day of the week when you restock and people can drop in and see your newest releases?

  Difference btw FX and MAC
Posted by: Japschin - 08-09-2003, 11:42 AM - Forum: Anime Discussion - Replies (13)

Questions: What's the difference btw FX and Mac's movies in terms of the quality? Is there a big difference in pictures, audio and subtitles? My friend gave me an Angel Links(FX) set. The subtitles are kind of horrible, imagine thick joining black letterings with thin white lining on black background most of the time. I can't complain about the audio and picture.
I am just wondering if MAC has as good audio and picture as FX? Thanks for the help!

  Adding titles
Posted by: dvd_master - 08-07-2003, 08:10 PM - Forum: Website Issues/Suggestions - Replies (17)

Could there be a feature that lets you add titles yourself?
Like a form which asks for titles, number of DVDs, subtitles, audios, etc. for us to submit?

It's really annoying having to have someone add a title every time you get one that isn't already listed.

And one more thing, a feature that lets you automatically add a cover picture if there is none would be nice. Like the screenshot command. I see a few titles I'd like to have added, but I once again don't want to have to upload them to a webspace, have a moderator add them after giving them exact details of the title.
