The ever-hungry schoolgirl Miaka Yuki finds herself along with her best friend, Yui, in China after reading an ancient book during a visit to the library. The friends are immediately set upon by bandits, but are saved by a handsome young man, who has a Chinese character marked on his forehead. However, when Miaka turns to see if Yui is all right after the encounter, she discovers that she is alone. Thinking that the man might know something about Yui?s disappearance, Miaka follows him. She catches up with the man, but events quickly escalate beyond her control. Meeting the Emperor, Miaka is recognised as the Priestess of Suzaku, saviour of the land of Konan. Miaka is charged with summoning the god Suzaku, but first she has to find the Suzaku Seven ? pre-ordained warriors with special powers, who serve to guide and protect the Priestess. But what about Yui? She was taken back to the library and can only read about Miaka?s adventures as they happen. Yet is there still a part for her to play?
