Don't worry about 'dis-ing' any of the bands I listen to, plus you only listed the sold out crap anyways.

Is Primus (sp?) really that great? I've heard of them from Empire Records, where Mark, & Eddy are talking. The compare Primus, The Misfits, & The Pixies (sp?) to each other.

As for this conversation. Your date of join this forum is like June 2003, right? So that means you weren't around when all the weird junk about me was exposed by me? Or when I continusly blahed on about my mental break down. I'm assume you weren't around for that because after it passed by the only person who really ever answered my post was Sanosuke.

They were a pertty good band, I might have actually liked them if I wasn't forced to listen to them. Plus, I don't see much difference between them & The Calling or whatever. The sound basicly the same to me.

Wow, someone is really into drill-n-bass, AO. Smile Well, Batz that's kewl with me. I had lotsa shit going on a few years back too so I can relate a bit. Anyone who replies to my goofy little posts is a-ok in my book.

As far as Primus goes I can't say they really compare in any way to the Pixies or the Misfits. They don't really compare to a lot of stuff. Let's see, if I had to call it I'd say they were perhaps a mix of Louisiana swamp rock and (older) Red Hot Chili Peppers slap bass style with some lightly metal-related guitar work (but not beats) with heavy-handed, thick drum beats and lo-fi fuzz throughout. Think perhaps a pervert-confederate version of Toadies with less melody, hehe. They have a real distinctive sound with the lead singer's slap bass (he's really good) and sneering nasal vocals, the guitarist's weird, fast, off-key solo-ing, and the drummer's "polished-up-Dave-Grohl" style as best as I can put it. I am not too huge a fan these days, but they're not too bad. Forget about the lyrics though, I never even took a second glance at 'em. Maybe someone can decipher their looniness, not me however. Smile

You know who else? Bjork! I freakin' hate Bjork! But i CANNOT live without her! Do y'all get that? Sheesh, freakin' looney shite. Bjork!! Smile

Woohoo.... I just got invited to a Hot Water Music concert in Gainsville!!!! I'm sooo happy now, my first concertBig Grin




I don't know how this applies other that music, but how many of you in here have seen a Broadway musical or 2? I've seen a couple, but I want to go to NYC and see more.

Maybe you can help me tarantula because I cannot posibly imagine: What is a rap concert like? Do they still use big video screens or lots of ligts and gels? Is there live instruments or is it all a CD playing in the background? Hehe. Smile

As far as broadway I saw Phantom of the Opera in San Francisco in like '94 or '95 I think. Does that count? I also saw this one show with a guy named "Gussy" and a lot of old fat women called "the last of the Red-Hot Mamas" who came out into the audience and smooched people. One of 'em landed me on the cheek.

I also forgot to mention that I saw Incubus & 311 a while back and it was not all that bad, but at the same time it was not that great and I wasn't much of a fan to begin with. It was a little weird cuz there were a lot of girls in high heels and dresses who were there for social reasons or something. Also it was a very small show compared to, say, TOOL. Nick Hexum (singer, guitarist) almost got in a fight with a crowd member over a thrown lighter that beaned him. What a violent guy. Boooo. Smile

I also saw Weird Al Yankovich a longer while back. It was classic. He put on a freaking incredible show and was turning cartwheels and high kicking all over and dressing up in different costumes for every song. He was at 127%!

Let's see, A Perfect Circle was awesome. Maynard (singer) has such a presence that he seemed 7 feet tall, (though he is actually like 5'8", hehe). For most of the show he had his back towards the crowd and was far back on the stage, but when he turned to us it was very dramatic and he would stomp and wiggle all over. For "thinking of You" he started to fish around in his pants and that got everyone screaming. "Judith" was the closing song and had everyone going ape-shit. It was cool, Maynard was like, "We'd like to play a song for you. It's called... Judith." and WWIII broke out.

Nine Inch Nails were also great. They had re-worked a lot of the songs to accomodate live performance and in many cases were better than the originals. Some of the band were on these huge hydraulic platform-arm things that bounced as they stomped on them. Trent was all dolled up in raggy clothes and grease paint and was constantly making obscene gestures at the crowd. There was 150% energy all the way through; even the slower songs had an excited tension to them. The heaviest thing I have even seen at a concert was when they began to play "Closer". I was effectively shoved fifty feet backwards from where I had been standing because the fans just went INSANE!!! For a very accurate depiction of the concerts on that tour see the DVD they have out: "And All That Could Have Been".

TOOL was very good but very hard to grasp. Like you knew you were at their show but you couldn't quite realize it. It was "cool" that they played a lot of their popular songs (pretty much every song they have is popular though) but I think everyone wanted a little more esoterica and jamming, (although some of the songs were re-worked to have extended interludes or longer endings, which really served to break momentum rather than build) I guess they were kinda slowing down with "Lateralus" and fans still wanted "AEnima" or even "Opiate". They did have lots of psychedelic art playing on some huge video screens and at one point the two performers from the "Schism" video came out and swung around from the ceiling naked. Everyone cheered when they finally embraced in the air. It was cathartic and healing. This was the first concert I've been to where I wasn't pretty high, so it was a little different. Any concert with Maynard is a great treat!

Tricky opened for TOOL and he was pretty good although he seemed to get pissed off and let the backup singers carry most of the show. The crowd was absolutely terrible and I was ashamed to be amongst them. They were heckling and booing him from the get-go. Tricky was a weird choice for an opener and he's no contest for TOOL, admittedly, but the discourtesy was not deserved. The bass was also very loud to the point of negatively affecting the sound. One girl told me later on that she only wanted to see Tricky and was going to leave during TOOL. She was late and missed Tricky's entire set so she never even went. I think she's better off having missed it then seeing him publicly humiliated like that.

Carlos Santana I saw on his "Supernatural" tour which is really too bad cuz he rocked in his day and still does, but the man is old! He played far too much of the new material and many of the songs were unrecognizable. Also there was like a boring 20-minute keyboard interpretation of "a Jimi Hendrix song" that was anything but Hendrix and stopped the show cold. I only wish I'd seen him back in his prime. Still, worth going I suppose. The opener was Mana, a very popular contemporary band from Mexico, and another brass band that was really good. Lots of Mexicans in the crowd and onstage. Hehe. Smile

Okay, Tori Amos was a brilliant performance! I could not believe how inhumanly, impossibly awesome she sounded. It was only the drummer, the bass player, and her sandwiched between a piano, two keyboards, and a little footlong casio toy-keyboard. Smile She just had so much goddess beauty or something, the entire thing was very introspective and her performance was just otherworldly beautiful. All the songs were a billion times better live than on the albums. When she got to the last song "Putting the Damage on" we were all in tears. She is surely one of the best musicians ever to live, I will back that up 7000%!

OK, so I've wasted enough space here as it is. Anyone else wanna give some in-depth concert reports? Smile

Anyways, so you've never been crowd surfing? I had just finished reading your post, & was going to go take a nap, then I was plauged with the weirdest question. Is it possible to have sex while surfing, & that got me to thinking, & I decided to ask if you (six_plus_one) or anyone else has ever crowd surfed before.(sp?)

A most intriguing query Batz...

Ok, here's the thing. I personally don't crowd surf as: 1) It is a bit of a passe trend that you'd hope would be reserved for more chaotic shows, but never is, 2) You lose your freakin' spot. Anyone knows it's damn hard to work your way up to the front again. 3) I myself am a bit of a portly gentleman and don't wish to cause anyone serious injuries, hehe. Smile

I do however think it might be possible to get it on while surfing. Generally at major shows that attract a wide variety of people, you never know what behaviors will cause problems. You might be able to smoke all the m*******a you wanted, for example, at a 311 show, but trying that at a Dave Matthews concert might get you narced on. I've never been, but I'd imagine smaller or even local punk shows have far less in the way of rules and regulations.

At big shows a girl can get "busted" and asked to leave or come with the security guy for simply flashing her chests, but at the same time you might be burning one down while your buddy records the show on video and never be tagged. Some people manage to discreetly get it on while amidst a large crowd (on solid ground) although I can't imagine really enjoying that. I think it depends on the venue and where you are and who you are around. For example, I would not try any such thing at an outdoor festival show as those places aren't built for crowd surfing in the first place. And I would probably try and keep it towards the dead center of the audience, not towards the front for sure, (you'd have some explaining to do when the guards pulled you down) and nothing around the fight pits. The crazier the show, I'd assume, the more acceptant the atmosphere, but also all the more perilous the surf.

The problem with the idea is that you are basically at the mercy of the crowd as to where and when you are moved around. Many, many people would be involved in your passage and it is likely that many will notice and some will have problems with it, setting the stage for all kinds of dropping-you-related-disasters. Also, crowd surfing is a very volatile sport and one really gets tossed, turned, and grabbed/poked in ways one might not realize one could. I can't tell you how many times I have been beaned by crowd surfers getting thrown around way too fast or rolling over too much and kicking me square in the face. Now add another surfer and make it so they both have to be intertwined and at least partly naked for the ride. Not very likely it would seem. I'd bet, at any rate, that you'd probably get "handled" by more guys than you'd care to remember.

Still, it is all in the execution, and I'm certain it could work with the right methods. Keep in mind, though, that the idea is to be aroused, and you would likely be doing this in front of thousands of people. Talk about your performance anxieties. Also if you're going to attempt it, watch-out for any video cameras that may be filming the event if you don't want your ass on tape for posterity. I'd avoid songs that use those bright, bright spotlights on the crowd too as they could easily give you away.

Y'know for hygene's sake I can't recommend any of this in good conscience, hehe, but if y'all do try, try to do it right. And tell us all if you do for God's sake! Smile

Oh yeah, also Junior Senior. It's been like 11 consecutive hours now listening to "Move Your Feet". Damn I gotta kick the habit!

That was more indepth than I expected to hear. Yeah, if I was skinny, & good looking I would have decided to go throuygh with what used to be one of my bigger jokes. I always talked writing sex manuels for things such as this. Like one titled Fu*king with the Fishes: A Guide to Underwater Sex. But, I only ever thought of Air, & Sea, & now crowd surfing.
