Posted by: orochi_greg - 04-20-2004, 04:03 AM - Forum: Anime Discussion - Replies (8)

Hi there!

I see that the Haibane Renmei boxset from FX is available here on Import Anime. Did anyone already buy it?
I guess that FX boxset is a good set cause all R1 dvd's are released, but i'd want to be sure.

Thanks in advance!

  live action asian film recommendations
Posted by: rarnom - 04-19-2004, 10:04 PM - Forum: Anime Discussion - Replies (20)

O.K.
I was inspired to write this because of the other asian films thread and one poster said something about a film called 'Infernal Affairs' being super cool and awesome.
Now, my deal is that a friend of mine had been getting free vcd's of Hong Kong and other various asian films from an internet friend. My friend had no use for them and he gave them to me. The films are either martial arts, Yakuza/Triad, or other action titles. I have no clue where to start and I would like to know which films I should definately start with. To get an idea of what I am up against, there are around 100 films in this box.
I have watched these so far and liked them:
Story of Ricky
Fist of Legend
The Blade

Also along with the comment about 'Infernal Affairs', are the sequels also good? I have II and III as well.

So, if you are savvy about the live action stuff and know some titles that you recommend then please list away.

I also know that it would help to hear what is in the box, and I am going to post the list as soon as I get it all typed up...Big Grin

There are so many asians films that are coming out, why are the HK ers so slow?
Posted by: buffgod - 04-19-2004, 07:17 PM - Forum: Anime Discussion - Replies (4)

I went to the film festival here in hawaii and some of the asian films are amazing. For example, I saw, Gozu, Crazy Crazy but loved it, Aragami, another by ryuhei kitamura, not bad, battlefield baseball, crazy funny and a couple of others. not only that in the past couple of years the asian film industry has been booming with great original stuff. why are the Hk ers so slow to pick this stuff up. Even some of the older stuff like Blind Beast, is there some sort priority as to which is rip first?????? We must bom bard the Hkers with emails telling them to produce this stuff.

  DVD to be obsolete soon
Posted by: hbk101 - 04-19-2004, 03:01 PM - Forum: General Babble - Replies (31)

Can you believe this? They are already talking about DVD becoming obsolete as early as next year. This means gobs of money to upgrade to new disc format and new player. I really thought DVD would last another 10 years, but I guess not.

CNN reports:
"Just as consumers are beginning to get comfortable with their DVD players, electronics manufacturers are set to introduce next-generation discs that store more -- and would be harder to copy. A dozen companies, headed by Sony Corp., are pushing a disc called the Blu-ray.

The Blu-ray disc has the most storage capacity, up to 50 gigabytes. However, it achieves that capacity by using a structure quite different from DVDs.

Movie studios generally aren't commenting on the new formats. And the rival industry groups aren't saying exactly when they expect to have players on the market. Both, however, consider the DVD ripe for replacement next year.

For the industry, a new format could mean an escape from the low-margin market DVD players have become. From costing more than $500 when introduced in 1997, players are now available for less than $50.

One thing the studios are sure to appreciate is that the new discs promise much better copy protection than DVDs. While the older format has been a boon to the studios -- it grossed them more than theatrical releases last year -- its susceptibility to piracy has been a thorn."

Posted by: Fleemer - 04-19-2004, 01:10 AM - Forum: Anime Discussion - Replies (4)

I know that these import are cheaper (somtimes by far) and often less CDs, just wondering why is that. Is it lesser quality or seomthing?

Also, I'm wondering what all these FX, MI AC things stand for. Some series Arn't found in teh store... ARe they out of stock or should I go elseware... Any ideas?
Looking for Trigun, Chobits, Love Hina -movies- and EVangelion Movies....

Anyhow, thanks. As soon as these questions are answers to sooner I can get to buying.
