A nice series. Enjoyable for all ages. And this (first) set isn't bad either. Video: TV rip, so you get all the problems connected to analog tape recording: colur blur, unsharp picture, distorted lines etc. Still perfectly watchable, though. 3/5 Audio: Sometimes noticable background noise. 3.5/5 Subs: Very good, but a lot of typos. 4/5 NOTE: The subs for the second part (ep 14-26) are far away from the quality of this first set. Inconsistent chinese names and a lot of untranslated stuff and bad grammar.

Studio: Manga International Episodes: 1-13 Video: 3/5 TV or 2nd-gen tape rips. Brightness too high and certain details unclear, pic jumps like a tape at times. Audio: 3/5 TV sourced; muffled slightly, not too crisp or clean, but functional. Subtitles: 3/5 Decent. The first 13 eps look fansub sourced with the occasional missing line or typo. The second 13 (not in this set) are AS ripped, fairly poor HK originals with Chinese names and Engrish and missing lines. Chaptering: Part A, Part B. Bonuses: None. Menus: Animated, BGMs, English: Play All, Chapters, Subtitles. Content: Missing prologues for the second 13 episodes and OPs for every episode besides the first. Laid out on 5 discs, 5-5-4-5-8 (the last 13 are not in this set). Impression: This is probably the best Angelic Layer set you'll get until an FX release (doubtful) or the ADV release (even more doubtful).

Audio, visuals, and subs were very good. The only annoyance with the subs were due to many typos. What can I say, CLAMP can do this sort of stuff in their sleep and make it work. While they're clearly trying to do something novel, there's not only lots of CLAMP style but even lots of familiar elements from other anime. The main character Suzuhara Misaki acts just like Sakura (From cardcaptor Sakura), and her doll, Hikaru, is dressed identically to one of sakura's outfits. The layer (where the angels battle on) appears to be modeled after Yu-Gi-Oh. The fighting dolls look and battle like Miku Fighters. The slightly insecure heroine, the broken family life, the friends and the way she's `led' into the game. Really, it's all a little bit familiar, artificial and even a little bit simplistic. Although, when it comes down to it, who cares. Cardcaptor Sakura is the cutest character and the fighting style in Miku Fighters was also amazing. CLAMP has the imagination, style, characters and animation skills to make this a anime look great. When watching this series, I saw a glimpse into my future (buying Angelic Layer art books and figurines). This is how solid the character designs are. Overall, orginality is not everything. The art and characters were amazing and the storyline was touching. If you enjoyed Card Captor Sakura or Miku Fighters...you are bound to get hooked on Angelic Layers edited by Hanamichi on 18 Jun 2002 7:37 pm

I agree with the previous review. I was quite pleased with the subtitles! They were easily understood and timed well. The video and sound are exellent! I also love the packaging. I am just glad that Anime Cartoon/Manga International didn not uselessly cut this series up into sets like they are doing with the newer animes.

Very well made. Packageing is excellent. Subbing quality similar in to Initial D DVDs, meaning they are the best I've seen. Very nice visuals and sounds. Only bad thing is that the endings and opingings are cut in the middle episodes, other wise well worth buying.
