The video on this set is simply awesome. Obviously taken from the 2002 R2 DVD's, everything is super sharp, clear and free of pratically any video problems and issues. I'm really struggling to try and find something wrong with the video quality on this one so I just won't bother. In short, this is perhaps one of the best examples of video on a HK DVD Set to date. Absolutely superb and damn near flawless.
Audio:
Things check out very good here too. Again, because it's taken directly from the R2 release, everything is as clear as bell and very crisp. Each punch and kick sounds as bone crunchingly awesome as it's meant to. Very few HK DVD's sound this good.

Comment:
I simply can't recommend a set that whilst asthetically pleasing in terms of video & audio is damn near impossible to understand because of lazy HK subbing. This could have been so good, but it isn't, so stay away.

Just as a short note, I love Baki (got all the tankoban, after all), but I guess I'd be the first unforgiving soul to have something against the subtitling job on this one. I know that for the price that it's offered for, most if not all HK DVDs are a steal, and a steal this one is. Great fights, really nice picture quality, and it sounds great... however, the subtitles are *supposed* to be there so that you can *understand* it... which, most of the times, I can't. It's a great title and everything, but I find myself having a difficult time understanding it. One of the other reviewers said it perfectly that these horrible subtitles only distract you from what you're watching, and become rather bothersome at times. Unfortunately, my understanding of Japanese is still quite rudimentary- otherwise I'd be able to watch the entire thing without having to use subtitles, period. Still, I know just enough to be able to say, "yo, that's absolutely *not* what they're saying..." Ummm... yeah, the verdict? Great FIGHTING animé that's for fighting fans... but get it only if you can stand subs that are obviously not true translations, or if you can understand Japanese... (or Chinese, I guess. I can't read Chinese so I don't know how good their subs are :D )

Being a fighting fan, I really loved this series. If you enjoy fighting animes, video games I believe you're gonna like this too. Has just the right mix between realistic and over the edge fighting. Moving on to the DVD, audio/video are nice and clear. The subs are surprisingly OK inspite of the few usual let downs (name changes, strange translation at times). The verdict? if you love fighting animes or games you're gonna dig this. If you don't, there's a chance this show will change your mind :)

This was surprisingly good every episode had me wanting to watch more. There are some amazing fights in this and the more(slightly) realistic martail arts was a breath of fresh air compared to the stuff in DBZ and the like. baki and Giea was amazing. also every fight with his dad...lol reminds me of an old kung Fu movie. Video quality- Amazing video watched this on a 5 foot projector t.v. and my laptop amzing on both. I think this was an R2 rip. few glitches but nothin to bad. great set Audio quality- sounded good on my laptop and the projector t.v. amazing. Love the opening song. Subtitle quality- hmmmm...hk orginal all the way but not to harrd to understand if you listen and read. You still get the overall story the subs had some pretty intresting translations..lol endorphins=brain coffee..lol loved it. A great set overall, some super brutal fight scenes and decent animation make this a safe buy for fighting type anime fans. The tytpical HK engrish subs don't really hurt it either. Worth a look......

This is a great series IMO, I liked it quite a bit. The tributes to various real life japanese fighters and wrestlers such as Antonio Inoki, Giant Baba, Rickson Gracie and Akira Maeda made this especially sweet for me. If you dig good fighting type animes then you'll definitly dig this! Video quality- Looked great to me, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a direct r2 rip. I did notice some very slight distortion in 2 seperate scenes though, one on disc 1 and one on disc 3. But other than those two instances it's perfect. Audio quality- Again it's great. It's only 2 channel , but it sounds great through my HTS! No sound level drop out at all. Subtitle quality- The subs have really bad timing, and they are typical HK original subs though. For a series of this type it's not all that bad though. It's still easy to follow, if anything it's just kind of annoying. But then, i'm sure we're all used to this sort of thing by now though lol. A great set overall, some super brutal fight scenes and decent animation make this a safe buy for fighting type anime fans, as well as fans of MMA and Puroresu (Shoot Fighting & Japanese Wrestling). The tytpical HK engrish subs don't really hurt it either. Worth a look...... edited by Great Muta on 19 Apr 2002 12:38 pm
