The video in this release is good for what it is. This movie was made in the 80's and its hard to make it look great, but the quality of the dvd is good. It appears to be a rip of an LD, but im not sure. For those of you with the domestic vhs, this is a very good upgrade. It looks much better and you will be happy with it

Audio:

Audio is fine. Songs, voices, and effects are all very clear and sharp. Much better than the old vhs, but not on par with new releases. It is however better than the japanese track on the new domestic dvds of the tv series. Weird eh

Subtitle:

Surprisingly good! I have never been a fan of manga international's sub work, but this work is good. A couple gramar errors, but hey im an English major so im going to catch more than most people, and i had no problem understanding the subs. We alos have a few delayed subs but you dont miss anything. Also a couple of funny mistakes like calling bart Bat. Of course you need to remember this is Fist of the North star movie, personaly I would have bought this dvd if it had no subs. Story, what story, lets see more exploding heads!!

Comment:

All in all a great release. If your a fan of Kenshiro and Rei this is a very good buy. It is leaps and bounds over the old vhs and the hard to find american r1 release on dvd. Yes there is a domestic of the movie put out by streamline, but it is not worth the money. It has no japanese track and the english dub is horrible. Another great thing about the fist of the north star movie by MI is that it contains the true ending of the movie. For those of you who have seen the domestic vhs or dvd release by streamline you are in for a treat. Those versions had the bad ending where ken loses to Raoh, but in this version you get the true ending that was intended for audiences to see. overall this is a great dvd. I strongly reccomend it.

I have to disagree on the previous subtitle comments. I'll give the sub 3.7 / 5.0 (HKN TV is my all time favorite show). On the first 37 or so episodes, the subs translation is really good(maybe fansub or taken from the us release??) But the timing of the subs at some time is really bad (ex: episodes 22 when Bart asks Ken why he respecfully buries Shin, and the response comes like 5 sec early). There seems to be some missing translation also(along with some parts that are very basically translated), HKN is a figthing/action anime but it does have some deep and profound dialogue especially after episodes 45. The subs quality after I think episodes 39 gets worst(HK subs). And worst, Toki beomes Doki... Dang! Anyway, the best of HNK TV starts after episode 45 until episodes 109 (end of the 1st serie). Overall, great value for this anime classic. I'll buy it even if there were no subs(couldn't buy the R2 released last July as it cost something like $850 for the whole serie in 26 DVDs and anyway is sold out)

Hokuto No Ken TV Part1 MI review Video : The video is VERY good for such an old show (it's ripped off the R2). The first 6 or 7 episodes are a bit grainy (can we say that?) then the image gets smoother later in the show (for the best). There are no pixelation to be seen in the entire set! Other than that, the last 3 episodes of the set are slightly darker, but not anything to really care about. Overall 4,3/5. Audio : No problem whatsoever. A single "2 channel" track that does the job pefectly. I'll give it a 5/5. Subtitles : The real highlight of this show!! The subs are indeed incredible for HK originals! The grammar, tense and pretty much evrything is VERY GOOD. I really wondered if those could be fansubs or not so they were good. It appears they are HK originals and are some the best I ever saw on a anime HK set. You can't go wrong with those. Let's just hope the 2nd and 3rd set will have the same quality for subs!! Check this : 4,5/5 !! Content + Extra : Hokuto No Ken is a very long show (Part1 : 109 episodes / Part2 : 45 episodes (total=154eps)). This set contains episodes 1 to 45 across 5 DVDs. There are no extras at all. The menu on each DVD is the basic one (PlayALL, Subtitles, Chapters) though graphically different for each disk. The show is pretty old (1984) and based on the famous manga by Hara/Buronson. The packaging (5DVD Gatefold set) is DDG (drop dead gorgeous), with beautiful art inside (ripped off the R2? could be). The show is VERY violent and not to be seen by children! I first saw the show on french Tv years ago and was delighted to see an HK release for this great series. If you happen to like violence and gore with the good guy beating the shit out of the bad guys, you'll love HnK. edited by Alcahest on 18 Sep 2002 5:11 am

I heard the AS release isn't so good and the R1 is so damn expensive. This is a great release: Video: May be DVD, but it seemed a little less quality, most likely LD, or Superb VHS rip. Audio: Seemed A-ok to me ^_^ Subs: Excellent, fansubs most likely, few spelling mistakes, and an occasional line not subbed but overall excellent. Even had some extras, a trailer in japanese for the movie, not subbed but eh. Overall definetly reccomend this version of Fist of the North Star.

This is definitely a decent buy because it has great subs, better animation quality than the old Streamline VHS tapes and decent audio. Watching this movie in its original japanese dialogue is a blessing because the Streamline dub was often times laughable. This is the bloodiest anime I have ever seen and for those who like gore, this will be an excellent buy. The animation isn't perfect quality, but compared to earlier releases, and the fact that it was released in the early to mid 80s this is the best it will probably ever look. It is very watchable. Watch this classic and see outrageous battles, wild characters and a story that no other anime can come close to compare to. This movie will get your attention.

Fist of the North Star Movie Released by Manga International English and Chinese Subbed Japanese Language Audio: Good i suppose, not dolby digital 5.1 or whatever but clear in it's own aspect. Probably Stereo. Video: Ripped from LD. Very, very nice though. Clear and sharp. It actually looks like maybe a dvd rip (maybe it is and i just don't know it) Subtitles. Ripped from fansub script. I believed they ripped the script from nora 'inu' g or whatever. Very nice but rare misspellings and errors. Pretty good.
