NOTE: I've watched the new MI edition, which has 26 eps on 3 DVD-9 This set isn't bad, but I can't follow the high ratings, that the previous reviewers have given. Video: Good, a little bit unsharp and I noticed some ghosting 3.5/5 Audio: Very good 4.5/5 Subs: Below average, but understandable. I've read the manga before, so I had no problems following the story, but at some times I thought I wouldn't have understood them correctly, if I didn't have previous knowledge. 2.5/5 Content: Very good.

Title: Hunter X Hunter Category: TV Total Episodes: 62 (Part I Episode 1 to 13) Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy Hunter X Hunter is Yoshihiro Togashi's latest work which was on TV in 1999. It is a story of a young 11 year old boy named Gon. Gon wants to be a Hunter like his father. There are various types of Hunters in his world, and being a Hunter gives one certain priviliges. Before you can become a Hunter you have to pass a test. Gon seems well on his way to passing this test as he's a very bright lad who is able to communicate with animals. Apparently his father, long believed to be dead, is still alive and was once one of the greatest Hunters in existance. Gon believes he will be able to meet his father once he becomes a Hunter himself. Video (5/5): Very good video quality. No errors of playback. There is only one opening theme song and one ending theme song in every disk. There is a review of the next disc?s first episode at the end of each disc. Audio (5/5): The sound is very good, there is no popping or crackling found. English Subs (3.5/5): The English is generally OK and understandable. Not much grammar and spelling errors, however, they are many errors of the characters? name. For example, they used the Chinese name ?Gan? instead of the Japanese name ?Gon?. ?Neoleo? instead of ?Leorio?, ?Culerpica? instead of ?Kurapika? etc. Chinese Subs (4.5/5): The Chinese subs are very good as it is translate by Chinese/Taiwanese. There are also errors of the name like the English subs. Packaging (5/5): A 3 DVDs set with nice box art. Nice pictures printed in the inside layer of the box too. Overall: A great anime with a lot of comedy and action to watch, genious character development, interesting story, interesting characters and much more to praise. The story starts off slow, but once you've watch more episodes it just keeps getting better and better. It always made me interested to see every episode after one another. It is another great work by Yoshihiro Togashi. Note: Review of Hunter X Hunter continues in Part II

An Extra note to add is that there is a newer version of Hunter X Hunter released by Manga International which contains Part I and Part II in one set. 3 DVDs (Episode 1 to 26) edited by cutekumiko on 21 Oct 2002 4:11 am

very good show. love it. I hope they continue this after the OVA since there's still a lot left to explain.
The packaging is a nice gatefold. Although you only get 13 eps i'd still recommend this one over the As-release with 26 eps. The overall quality is much better, video, audio and especially the subs.

After killax's PERFECT review (look below), very little is left for me to say. I just want to add that although the series starts off kinda slowly, it has potential. The way the story and character build up flows smoothly is a dead giveaway and any one paying attention will agree with me. So, go and get it :)

VIDEO: Breathtaking... They released thirteen episodes, not the usual 26, but this time, the video doesn't suffer from 10 epsidoes on a DVD. There are a total of four episodes on each disc, with five on the last one. Also, MI does something that some people may not like, but I don't really care either way. They deleted the intro/ending from every episode except the first and last one, (which makes sense), and they also deleted the previews for the upcoming episode. This also is good since it reduces the load on the translator and bumps up the video quality a bit by giving it an extra 6-7 minutes to work with. Overall though, when I was watching it, I couldn't tell that it was from a HKDVD. That is why I am giving this series a 5/5.
Audio:
AUDIO: WOW... I heard part of the AS/AV set(s) and they were dull and muffled. It wasn't horrible, but there is a definate difference between them and this MI set. MI/AC was able to produce LOUD (audible) clear and crisp audio without allocating to much BW so that the video would suffer. I think they did a very FINE job in the department.

SYNOPSIS: It must be mentioned that not only have I not seen too much, but also that the discovery of the world, and how it works, forms a fairly major part of the plot. After all, our hero is a ten year old boy who's spent all of his life in a village deep in the wilderness. And even given this he appears to prefer the wilderness to the village. He's got pretty good skills at wilderness survival, but his knowledge of the wider world and the people and forces that fill it is marginal at best. Things change somewhat when he's rescued by a hunter. Hunters are highly trained, and fairly deadly, individuals who are capable of dealing with the dangers found within the wilderness. And given that human law, order and civilization seems to be spread fairly thinly on this world many of the dangers that can be found are human. This hunter informs our hero that, against what his aunt had always told him, his dad is not only alive, somewhere, but considered to be one of the greatest of the hunters. Propelled by this information, the need to ask 10 years worth of questions, and a sizable interest in the hunter professions he decides to become a hunter. This requires a sizable number of tests in the various locales this fantasy world has to offer. Fortunately he find some good, albeit fairly exotic, companions to travel the path with him. VIDEO: Breathtaking... They released thirteen episodes, not the usual 26, but this time, the video doesn't suffer from 10 epsidoes on a DVD. SUBTITLES: Recently, we have seen a wave of titles under their new GREEN Mi logo that sport some really decent subtitles. We will never get PURE R1 quality subtitles, so stop asking for that since if they have to HK-SUB it themselves, then it's virtually impossible. However, they could get someone that knows both japanese and english in there to help out and get the subs somewhat better. Well... This is one of the first titles where they did that. They spent a good deal of time with the subtitles for both set one and set two. The result has been fantastic. Here is an exerpt from episode three. 20 00:02:34,235 --> 00:02:36,897 Something is happening . Go and have a look. 21 00:02:36,938 --> 00:02:38,098 Damn it all. 22 00:03:11,472 --> 00:03:14,873 You are very skillfu. Stop, Gates. 23 00:03:23,985 --> 00:03:25,111 Get down from it. 24 00:03:26,187 --> 00:03:28,417 I call you to get down from it. 25 00:03:28,456 --> 00:03:30,686 What? 26 00:03:34,729 --> 00:03:36,321 What are you doing? Away from it. 27 00:03:38,166 --> 00:03:40,430 Throw him out of the ship. 1 2 28 00:03:47,909 --> 00:03:49,843 Since you're on board 29 00:03:49,877 --> 00:03:52,846 you must follow my order. 30 00:03:52,880 --> 00:03:56,281 Otherwise you will have the same fate as that guy. ------------------------------------------------------- As you can see, they use commas, periods, and have actually really really good sentance structure. I compared these to the fansubs, and these must be their own sice the fansubs say basically the same thing, but use different words to express the same meaning. So I think MI did an excellent job on this set, you couldn't ask for more from a HK company. That is why I am giving these subtitles a 5/5. OVERALL: Buy this set now. Don't be fooled into spending less money for the set of ten DVDS with episodes 1-62 on them. Here, I'll break down your options when ordering... Ep1-62 by AS ---------------- 1-26 are VHS rips with shoddy audio and subtitles.. 27-62 are actual DVDRIPS with better audio and subs. Ep1-26 by MI ---------------- Both sets 1-13 and 14-26 will cost you more, but the quality is outstanding and they are true dvdrips. Then purchase the addon by AS or AV of 27-62 which are also dvd rips. So in the end, you will spend like 30$ more with this option, but you are guaranteed dvdrips. ANSWER: Obviously go with the set by MI for the first set of episodes. The quality is MUUUCH higher for Ep1-26 and the subs totally kick ass. MI did RIP AS's version of 27+ so you only have one choice for that, but the subs in that area are also decent, so this set is a definate must buy. edited by killax on 18 Mar 2002 11:44 am edited by killax on 18 Mar 2002 11:48 am
