The video is good, it's from a vhs tape, but it still looks really good
Audio:
Good audio, there's one second when there is a little disturbance and the audio disappears

Comment:
I guess that this is the best way to see the show, but the show is a little slow and repetitive so the quality problems seem larger than they really are when watching it.

VIDEO: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Well where to start. You first have to consider a few things. This is an EARLY 1980's anime. So the quality of animation back then compared to now is drastically different. For an example, look at orange road or ikkoku compared to "x" or love hina. That's the type of comparison you can make when looking at this series. Also, there are no dvds that exist for this series. I think there are a few laserdiscs though. I am un-sure of how exactly they transferred the video onto here though. So how about the quality? Well from episode one to like episode say seven, the quality is pretty lousy. It's verry blurry and needs a definate cleaning. But heh, MI isn't exactly in the touching up service. After that though, from ep 7 on... I believe this set is from ep1 to 73, it's very clean. I suppose maybe it is laserdiscs. I'm not sure though. However, they did jam to many episodes onto these dvds. They are 9.4gb dvds, but still, too much video for too few discs. Overall on the video, I would say that this is a 4/5 givin that the anime is almost twenty years old.
Audio:
AUDIO: ----------------------------------------------------------------- I've watched about thirty episodes so far. For the most part, you can hear everything great. I didn't hear any pops or cracks that are found in other HKDVDS, so I'm fairly satasfied. Also givin the age of this anime title, I have to give the audio section a 5/5.

SUBTITLES: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Well, this is the first anime title that MI put some damn effort into. I'm happy. Granted, it's DEFINATLY not region one type quality subtitles, they are a hell of a lot better than their previous releases. This has to be the first release that they actually "fansubbed". I'll use that term loosly heh, since I'm un-sure if a HK person can actually fansub something to proper enlish, however, for a series that has no subs whatsoever prior to the release, and for MI to undertake such a freaking huge process (114 episodes), I must appluad them. For 90% of the series, you can understand what's going on in the anime. I'm trying to think of another HKDVD to compare this too.... Actually, I have a really good idea... Here is a .SRT (subtitle file) from the anime. I'll only post some of it, but it will give you a general idea of what the subs were like. Ok, the following is a subtitle example from episode 9: 13 00:00:38,339 --> 00:00:40,102 The Galaxian Wars tournament has temporarily been put on hold 14 00:00:41,743 --> 00:00:44,473 Before the semi-finals the Golden Cloth was stolen! 15 00:00:44,579 --> 00:00:47,241 Mysterious Saints in black cloth appeared 16 00:00:55,256 --> 00:00:56,348 And before everyone"s eyes 17 00:00:56,391 --> 00:00:58,359 Each stole a piece of the Golden Cloth 18 00:00:58,393 --> 00:01:01,362 Currently, both arm and leg parts have been recovered 19 00:01:01,396 --> 00:01:02,590 The remaining parts number 5 in total 20 00:01:02,697 --> 00:01:04,927 The helmet, breastplate, girth 21 00:01:04,966 --> 00:01:07,400 shoulder plates and stomach plate 22 00:01:07,435 --> 00:01:09,699 I vow that we, the Kidou Foundation 23 00:01:09,737 --> 00:01:14,071 Will recover the missing pieces by any means necessary 24 00:01:14,108 --> 00:01:15,973 'By any means necessary"? 25 00:01:16,010 --> 00:01:17,204 It is said that a leader within the criminal society is --------------------------------------------------------------- As you can see, the subs are really pretty good for a HK-FANSUB, actually this is the first series where they are really good and MI stopped being lazy. You really have to remember guys, MI and AS make 90% of their profits overseas, so when a company like them actually puts a lot of efforts into the subtitles, it's something to take note of. OVERALL: This is a definate must buy. However, there is one issue I have that sort of pisses me off. It looks like the set I own has some shit on the bottom of the dvds. Scratches and crap. I bought this set a long time ago, so I assume that if you buy this set now, you will not have that same problem, but you always run the chance of it when you purchase a series with a high ## of DVDS.

This is because its an old anime, but the picture is generally clean and clear with minor scences shaking
Comment:
Video: This is quite good, considering the age of this anime, however it is obviously a vhs rip onto dvd, since the first dvd video quality has the usual vcr scan lines at the bottom. Surprising they actually used a better vcr and got rid of that for the other 7 discs. Video is 1980's so the source has quite a bit of grain in it. AC logo appears sometimes at start of episode sometimes during the video but from what i have recalled, just once per ep. Also intros are intact and so is the ending for each episode i think..... Okay update.. it seems the intro is only at the begginning however the ending for each episode is intact. Audio: Sounds good on my stereo computer setup, nice sound. Can't find much fault with it Subs: Generally its understandable. The names of 4 of the main bronze saints are actually spelled properly ie Seiya, Shiryuu, Shun and Hyoga but Ikki is spelt YaFai (chinese name ^_^). The other saints names are generally all chinese ones however the important ones like most of the gold saints are right. Menu: Standard fare, normal screen with the SS intro song playing. Personal Comment: Personally i prefer the manga compared to this as the anime got stuffed :p Overall this is a good buy if you are nostaligic and miss the good ol Saint Seiya. This version is also the uncensored one. edited by zommy on 08 Mar 2002 2:09 am
