The overall feel is rather dark and brooding, but I think that was intentional in order to convey the atmosphere of the whole epic struggle and slaughter of war against a vast race in the darkness of space. - The menu screen is horrible though. It just loops through trailers and commercials. There were many chapters/scene selections, but I had no scene selection menu. I had the "Perfect Edition."
Audio:
Phenomenal! Class Macross music and some really good Minmei songs. I especially like the movie title's song, "Do You Remember Love."

This is my favorite anime movie, so I am of course a little biased. The plot line is confusing and unless you know the storyline from the series, the movie will make very little sense and you won't enjoy it. Afterall, they crammed the entire series into 2 hours, so what can you expect? It's like Macross with all the filler and slow parts gutted out. Still, they managed to included just about every character and scene, including those cool soda-robots! (Check out the Easter Egg in the final battle scene when Hikaru is inside Badolza's ship -can you spot the Budweiser/missiles?)

VIDEO: Pretty bad, yeah. While not some of the worst I've ever seen. It was tolerable enougj, but it still annoyed me for this classic film to have crappy video. GRADE: C+ AUDIO: Pretty good for the most part. I noticed that it would sort of pop up really high at some points, and then go back to normal. Still, the audio was very good, and there isn't much to gripe about. GRADE: A- SUBTITLES: Fansubs, I guess. Either that, or the best HK originals I have ever seen in my entire life. One problem: At one scene a subtitle stays on the screen for nearly thirty seconds, and there was a lot of dialougue in that scene too. Other than that, they were fine. GRADE: A SERIES/MOVIE/OAV: Well, Macross does it again! This flick is G-O-L-D. And don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. I still need to check out the original series. *grumble, grumble.* GRADE: A+ MENUS: The menus rocked, even if the song being played in the background was never in the movie. Some nice artwork, and a wonderful song. GRADE: A+ PACKAGING: Pretty boring. Just your average keepercase-type-thing/whatever the hell you call them. The cover was pretty boring, also. It just features Minmay and Hikaru. Big deal. Does it really MATTER that much, though? If it does, you're one sad, twisted anime fan. GRADE: D+ CHAPTER STOPS: I don't mind for a series to only have chapter stops once every episode. I'm used to that, so it never bothers me. But, JESUS, this movie had NO chapter stops whatsoever. NONE. Pretty crapo'rific. GRADE: F- EXTRA FEATURES: I would have liked some, but there were none. GRADE: N/A OVERALL DISC OPINION: Well, all I have to say is this: If this DVD is not in your collection, then run and buy it. I don't care where from. Even if you have to run through the firey pits of hell to reach an extra dollar that will help you pay for it back on earth, and then run back through the pits of hell, and then watch every distributor go out of stock, and not buy anything for three years, until it's back in stock. It's worth it. Also, it will never be released on region-one DVD, so it's more than just essential. It's... er... super-essential. *_* GRADE: A+ Yay.

Well here's my review... Video-4.5/5 As the previous poster said the video is a bit grainy, through it is still pretty good-no big deal through Audio-4.5/5 The audio is mono-not dolby digital which i was a littile disapointed in,aside from that there are no real problems with it. Subtitles- The translation is spot-on,probably from a fansub-the timing is good and the names are pretty much correct, some lines go too fast but only a small number do so. And some typos but those are really minor ones The movie- I like this movie a lot it's always been one of my favorites..what else can I say:D Get this if you haven't already! You won't see it officially released here it in the US ever(or at least for a very long time) UPDATE:There is another version by FX called the perfect edition which has much better video as well as having dolby digital 2.0 sound. However the translation isn't quite up to par compared to this one. So it's a trade-off:Either get the one with better video and audio but not quite as good subs or the this one with the better subs but not as quite good video or audio. My recomendation? Get both so in case feel like watching the FX version and don't care about the translation of subs but care about the video/audio. And the other one whenever you feel you care about the subs but not so good video/audio. edited by DarkonOmega on 19 Aug 2002 11:14 am

Man,I've always liked this movie...well here goes a quick review... Video- Very good, although it is a little bit grainy Audio-The audio is nice and clear, no problems at all Subtitles- These are excellent as well, through some words are misspelled, it's easy to tell what they say. Overall this a great movie, and since it will probably never be released stateside on DVD I highly recommend it if you don't have it and like it. A minor gripe I did have through is that there is no scene selector-But I guess that's what a DVD remote control is for.... edited by Blade on 17 Mar 2002 9:53 pm

What can I say -- this is a classic. I could gripe about the obvious flaws of this disc all day but in the end it wouldn't amount to a raindrop on a molehill. Sure, the video looks like those strange, bleeding lumps in my dog's feces. Yeah, the sound drops out during a particular scene and it's annoying. There are no chapter stops. I guess David Lynch secretly directed Macross: Do You Remember Love?. An email address pops up occasionally to remind us which side our bread is buttered on. The translation, for the most part, is spot-on. It came from fansub materials, so there's little to griepe about -- although I will say that I have seen better scripts for this flick. Nonetheless, Macross: DYRL is an endearing classic and since this is the only option for English speaking consumers to own this on DVD, we have no choice but to suck up our losses and deal. Although this is a pretty good release, considering the flaws. edited by Chuckopolis on 05 Mar 2002 6:20 pm

Ahhh this is an infamous movie. Almost impossible to get in R1 and only till recently does there look like a remote chance of this ever coming to the US, but who knows about that. As for the disc... Video: Well I gave this two stars, this one is hard to judge but its not really THAT bad. The problem is the film is very dark and grainy. Now is this how it is because the film is so old? Well that definately plays a part but this was a little more older looking than normal. Not bad by any means, and I do stress this is the best you can get in R1, and its still very good release. Audio: Good stuff, not a very hot audio track here but its got no problems. There is a slight echo, but its not as bad as many releases. Subs: Fansubs, really great subs here, just a few problems here and there like normal but there are less mistakes than newer releases. The fansub script had a few strange lines, but its still really good. Songs even got translated so thats a plus. The only real annoyance I would say is that instead of a logo in the video you get a email ad in the subs during quite scenes. *sigh* Still a good release, the best you can get and its a classic movie.
