The video for this series is awesome! The show is very old (from the early 80s) so the animation isn't the best, but the video is great! No fuzziness or pixelation that I noticed, and colors are smooth and don't blend with each other. Excellent job in this department!
Audio:
Audio, like the video, is in excellent shape! It's an old show, so don't expect any full one surround sound effects. The audio comes through clear and there was no distortion at all. Very good job on this part of the set!

THe series that started one of Japan's biggest franchises is here! This is the original Mobile Suit GUndam series! Every episode is included in this set, included the Island episode that was cut out of US broadcasting and DVD release! Very good animation for an old show. Lot's of great giant robot fighting in this series. This is the show that broke the mold for all giant robot animes in being more serious then other "Super Robot" shows of the era. A main point in the show is the loss of innocents in a war, as the mere children onboard White Base go through the Hell's of the One Year War. I recommend this legendary piece of anime for all fans! Now, for the DVD itself. Yes, like I said, there are Chinese names used. But I have you covered. Email me at [email protected] and I will email you a list I started that has the Chinese names to real Japanese names. It can help those who are new to this show find out who's who. It's incomplete, but I have most of the main characters on it. The opening of the show is present at the beginning of each disc, and the ending follows the last episode of each disc. There is only one opening and ending for the whole show, so it's the same songs over and over :P A wierd thing they cut out of each episode is the little recap before the episode title. It's not anything really important that you'll die without seeing though. It basically says some information on important events that have happened in the series. It's not needed unless you fall alseep for a few episodes :P Eyecatches are intact also. Perfectly too. There's two different versions, and thy change at the correct time in the series. Wierd thing I noticed. One episode had the correct Japanese names subbed for everything. Amuro was Amuro. White Base was WHite Base. It raised my spirits in hope that the show would be like this till the end, ut next episode it was back to Chinese names :( Oh well. Oh, and one episode has no English subtitles. Just Chinese. It's not an important episode, so you can miss it and not miss anything. It's near the end, if I recall. Anyways, I highly recommend this show for all anime fans!

When I bought this set I was really excited to be able to see the series in Japanese since it was only available here dubbed. I started watching it, the audio and picture were really good, but then the subs came on. They are horrible. Not to mention there are a few other problems: in ep 10 the subs just keep on saying Merry Xmas, happy NY, etc in ep 17 the sound ahead of the picture and subs the 2nd half to ep 23 and 32 are missing all the openings were cut off, even the ones that weren't talking about the last ep except for the beginning of the disk, but there were no english subs beginning and ending songs once/disk, and only with chinese subs I definitely would recommend staying away from this release unless they have really inproved it by now. I end up liking the movie version better in the end, but there were a few eps that were better than what they did with them in the movie. Picture 4.5/5 Audio 4.5/5 Subs 0.5/5

The original Gundam show was pretty entertaining. It did follow a formula too often though which made it slow during parts. Many people suggest to just watch the compilation movies but I still enjoyed this series. The video quality was surprisingly pretty good considering the age of the series. I've seen much worse. I suppose the video here was ripped from LD. The audio was in about the same good quality. Not the greatest but okay for its age. The subtitles are piss poor. It's a translation of the Chinese script which means many things don't make sense and names are constantly getting screwed up to the point where the sound nothing like the original name. Sometimes this can be a bit of a bother when you're not completely familiar with the Japanese language. The talk here is a little more on the technical side which means there are many parts where you won't completely understand what the characters are saying or their true motivations. There are a few other problems with these discs as well. The beginnings are all cut out, where they talk about what happened last episode while sometimes giving new footage. The ending halves to two different episodes are cut completely. During the ending half of another episode the video and audio go out of sync. Hopefully a better version of this will be releases. You may be able to get by with this version but you won't get the full experience.

Video - 4/5 -------------------------- OK let's face it people, this really doesn't look too shabby at all, in fact for the age of the show it looks quite good. It's a tad grainy at times but that can all be put down to the age of the materials and the show. It's a miracle it didn't look worse I'll say that for sure. Sound - 4/5 -------------------------- I seriously couldn't notice any problems with the audio at all. Once again the age of the show means you're not going to get a top of the range DTS sounding track but it does the job, both on my normal mono TV and the 5.1 setup I have downstairs. Some set-ups may have problems but I know mine didn't. Subtitles - 2.5/5 -------------------------- How I wish I could read Chinese or speak Japanese. If I could do either of those I wouldn't have to sit down and read those Engrish ridden subtitles. Names are messed up and some translations seem to have been done by a four year old on crack but the show is understandable and if you take the time to think about them you'll be able to tell what they really mean. Many will think 2.5/5 is too much and it should have been 1/5 but I can deal with them and to tell the truth after a while it didn't bother me anymore, but people with no patience should stay away. When it comes down to it this could have been a great buy, anyone with half a brain knows that Gundam 0079 is the best Gundam saga (with Z Gundam hot on it's tail) and with the fine audio and video it should have been a safe buy. If you can deal with wrong names and bad Engrish then pick it up, if not don't. edited by NoxiousOffender on 03 Mar 2002 11:14 am
