The Good: This is the best Gundam series ever!
The Bad: To find out what happens to Camille and the other surviving cast members, you must see Gundam Double Zeta. Gundam ZZ is a series that is supposed to be a lot less serious than Zeta, and have a lot more little kids than Zeta had. That?s a horrible combination for any anime, and especially for Gundam.
And The Ugly: The subtitles for the first episode are horrendous, I guess they were drunk when working on the subs for this episode. Either that or they were very tired cause there?s a lot missing.
Introduction: Ever since I got interested in Gundam, all the fans would tell me is, ?Stop obsessing over Wing, there are better Gundams out there, just watch Zeta!? One by one, I would watch the other Gundams, and almost every time, it was better than Wing. Still, Zeta was only available on fansubbed vhs at the time, and not all of the fifty episodes had subtitles. So I decided to wait until it finally came out on HK DVD with English subtitles. About a month ago, the waiting finally came to an end, and the MI DVD set for Zeta was finally released with English subtitles. Not only was I happy about getting to finally see Zeta, I was happy that MI was the first to release it. They have recently been using fansub scripts on all of their recent projects, so I knew that the subs would be amazing. They were amazing...for the most part anyway, but at last I get to tell those fans that they were right. There are better Gundams out there, and Zeta is the best of them all!
Animation/Mech Design: Being the series aired in 1985, you obviously can?t expect to see the dazzling animation styles of current animes like Cowboy Bebop or Jin Roh; but for 1985, the animation is pretty damn good. In the same way that you can say the animation for the original Gundam was good for its time, you can say the animation for Zeta is good for it?s time. Some of the backgrounds are more basic, but the character animation is top notch. The mech designs are some of the best I?ve seen out of any Gundam series. Not only do the Gundams look cool, but so do the mass produced suits, mobile armors, and other suits special to the series.

Music: The background music was good, but it never caught my ear or made me say, wow that was beautiful. Maybe that?s because the music is 17 years old, or maybe it?s because I was concentrating on how cool the show was. There?s nothing wrong with 17 year old music, heck, most of Metallica?s best albums came out in the 80's. The two opening songs were great, a lot better than the opening song to the first Gundam. They were also a lot different from the other songs for the other series. These songs are a little more mellow, matching the overall feel of the show. The ending song was ok, nothing to go bragging about though.

Video Quality: The Japanese R2's were used to make this set, so the video quality was wonderful. I never really noticed anything wrong with the video on the set. The DVD?s they used for the set weren?t perfect however. When played for long periods of time on some players, the disks tended to skip and freeze. My portable DVD player didn?t like this set too much. After playing half of the second DVD fine, it couldn?t make it through a whole episode without having a skipping/freezing problem, and it came to a point where I just gave up and played it on my other players. The skipping/freezing problem didn?t happen that often on my other players, but it would still happen after at least three or four hours of constant watching, but not all of the time.

Subtitle Quality: For the most part, the subtitles were fansub quality. However, the series was never completely fansubbed, and certain companies had some episodes that other companies didn?t have. So a number of different scripts were used in order to get the most fansubbed episodes possible. The result of this is that sometimes the names would be slightly different from episode to episode, like Fa and Pha. Another example is Zeon, they would have different spellings like Jion and Jeon. The final fansub chart looks like this:
Fansubs: 1-4,7-42,47-48
HK original: 5-6. 43-46,49-50
Some of the fansubbed episodes after around episode 30 lose a bit of quality, but are still very good. The HK originals are understandable but can give you a headache. They get as good as a step below fansub quality, and they get as bad as the subs for the original Gundam set...and that?s bad. The worst episode subtitle wise however is the first episode. The first three or four lines have no subs, and then every now and then a line is skipped. Someone will talk and nothing will appear below. When there are lines, they are fansub quality however. Sometimes the subs are just wrong though. Jerid's insult about Camille makes no sense since he says, "Camille isn't that a man's name," when he's supposed to say, "Camille, isn't that a woman's name?" The subs get a lot better a minute or so into episode two, and are fansub quality. Like in most HK sets, there is only one opening and closing per DVD, and there are only subtitles to the songs on the last DVD, but they are HK subs. Also, most of the introduction parts before the episode title screen don?t have subtitles, only about ten or so have subtitles, and most of those ten are HK subs. This didn?t matter that much being the majority of the intros were just recaps from the previous episode.

Action: I was very impressed with the action scenes in this series. The Gundams were nowhere near invincible. They didn?t have any super weapons that could make them unbeatable like the Shining/God Finger in G Gundam, the Double-Busta Rifle in Gundam Wing, the Satellite Cannon in Gundam X, or the Moonlight Butterfly in Turn A Gundam. The only weapon that came close was the mega particle cannon that Char used. But that was bulky (big enough to be considered a small mobile suit), and didn?t have much accuracy. It wasn?t even part of his mobile suit, it had to be sent to him when he needed it. It was just good old beam rifles and beam sabers for the most part. What does this all mean you might be asking, well it means that most of the fights were evenly matched and it wasn?t obvious who was going to win from the start. That makes the fight scenes more exciting, and improves the anime overall.

Characters: To put it quite simply, this series has the best set of characters ever. All of the main surviving characters from the original return, and a whole new great cast of characters join the story. After seven years, some interesting things happen to the characters from the original. Most of these are spoiler worthy, so I will not mention them here. There are a lot more new types and artificial new types in this series than any other, and there are a lot more women piloting mobile suits in this series.

Story: The story for this series is definitely darker than any other Gundam series, a lot of important people die during the duration of the series. Zeta Gundam is the sequel to the original Gundam. The original series took place in UC 0079, and Zeta takes place in UC 0087, seven years after the One Year War ends in UC 0080. Gundam 0083 does a great job of connecting the two TV series. At the end of Gundam 0083, the calamity of Operation Stardust caused the Federal Forces conspirators to create an elite military organization called the Titans. Their goal was to combat terrorism and anti-Federation rebellion, but their barbaric acts made them become the enemies in Zeta Gundam. A prime example of their barbaric acts occurs two years before Zeta?s storyline. Taken from the deceased Gundamproject.com, ?In UC 0085, Titans forces commanded by Colonel Bosque Omu suppress a spacenoid demonstration at Side 1's "30 bunch" (its 30th colony) with deadly force; pumping nerve gas into the colony, the Titans kill the colony's 3 million inhabitants.? To combat the evil Titans, the AEUG (Anti-Earth Union Group) is formed. The AEUG is comprised of renegade Federal Forces members and former Zeon soldiers. Char, under the alias of Quattro Bajina, and the surviving cast of characters from the White Base are now fighting on the same side to bring down the Titans. So the side?s are now switched from the original series. For the most part, the Zeon are now the good guys and the Federation are the bad guys.
The story begins when Char and a small group of soldiers go to Side 7 to retrieve the Titan?s new Gundam, the Gundam Mark II. At the same time, the hero of the story, Camille Bidan gets detained after getting into a fight with Titans ace pilot Jerid Messa. Char then begins his attack, and Camille escapes custody. Camille then hijacks one of the Gundam Mark II?s and meets Char. The AEUG group steals another Gundam Mark II and head back to their ship, the Argama, with Camille and two Gundam Mark II?s. This is only the beginning of a long and wonderful story.

Conclusion: This is definitely, without a doubt, the best Gundam series I have ever seen. I now understand what all of the buzz was about, and I?m glad that I have a high quality set of the series. It will last me until the R1's come out in America...whenever that will be. It?s amazing how many aspects were borrowed from the original and Zeta and used in the other Gundam series. It just shows how much these two series have influenced the Gundam world. History repeats itself many times in the Gundam world, even from the original to Zeta. If you consider yourself a Gundam fan, or even if you just saw the original and want more, then make it a point to see Zeta as soon as you can. Trust me on this one, you?ll thank me later.
