The video is quite good, it seems to be a dvd rip (probably region 2), sometimes the color seems a little washed out but its nothing major. The manga international logo apears a few times. Nothing too much too complain about, but the new perfect edition is superior.
Audio:
The audio is pretty good, the show is old so it sounds its age, and plus the original opening and ending themes are intact in this version.

Comment:
While the video and audio is good, the subtitles are awful and ruin a good show. Manga internation recently released a region 1 rip of this show under its perfect editon lablel, just get that version instead and avoid this one at all costs!

The resolution is not very good in my opinion and the video quality does not reflect the true ability of DVD technology. But I don't think it will take away the experience of enjoying a great series nonetheless.
Audio:
Very difficult to hear, kinda have to turn up the volume a bit. But the seiyuus from the original series make a huge comeback for this great hit.

Not only is it the best Gundam series ever, but maybe one of the best animes of all time.

'80s grain and colors, lots of pixelation in motion scenes...actually I noticed that some reviewers rate this title's video a 5...that makes me wonder if they actually have a different set, or the MI set has been somewhat remastered...to me, it really looks like a VCD rip

Decent subs until the end, but nothing that will leave you saying "...huh?" when you digest the series as a whole. Most OP/EDs have been cut. For the first episode on each disc, you get the intact OP, and for the last episode on the each disc you get the ED and preview for the first episode on the next disc.

The video for the series is excellent. I beleive the source was form the remastered DVDs they released in Japan (as most of the art in the case is from those sets.) If not, then it's one Hell of a good LD rip. I didn't notice any drop in quality anywheres in the series either.

Audio is great for the series, too. Nothing ever gets distorted. All lines come through clear, and all sound effects sound fine, too.

Hailed as one of the greatest Gundam series made. Zeta Gundam takes place 8 years after the first series ends. It focuses on a group called the AEUG (Anti Earth United Government) trying to oust the Titans (a corrupt group originally made to combat uprisings) from becoming more powerful then they should be. Lot's of returning cast from the original series, so ou should first watch 0079 (series or movies). As for the DVD itself, it's made pretty well. the 50 episode series is divided across 6 discs, so video quality doesn't suffer from over packing of episodes onto discs. Each disc is divided into the shows opening, all the episodes, the ending, and then the next episode preview of the last episode on the disc. Yep, Next episodes previews for all other episodes except the last on each disc are cut. Your not missing anything though, so don't worry. Eyecatches are alos present in the series. Both of them, to be exact. Both openings are used for the show too. There are two different endings, too, but the changes in each are hardly notcieable (Fau's clothes change color). THe opening and ending are both subbed on the last disc only. This is the first HK DVD I have seen that has the little MI logo appear in the upper righ hand corner from time to time. I didn't mind it. Wasn't very annoying. Also, in times there isn't speech for a while, the email address appears in the subs spot. I think that about covers it. Awesome series. One of my favorite Gundam series. Very serious, so don't expect no God Fingers or anything :P

A realy good serie, you need to watch 0079 Gundam before and ZZ-Gundam after the serie, sinds the story developments follow each other very nicely ...

I'm very happy I got my hands on this set. I haven't finished it yet. Disc 6 was sent back due to defect. The video of course is fine. It's an old anime so don't expect digitally remastered quality. Same goes for the audio. The subs are pretty good so far. the only problems occur in eps 1 and 5. Ep 1 had every other line missing making it impossible to understand what's going on. ep 5 had some nearly impossible to understand subs. Just really bad. Looked like a foreign language. Luckily those are the only major problems I've noticed with the subs.

Title: Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Length: 50 episodes Series type: TV series Formats available: Hong Kong Region 0 DVD (MI), imported vhs/laser disk, fansub DVD layout: 6 DVD?s (9,9,8,8,8,8) Released: 1985 Languages available: Japanese Subtitles available: Chinese, English Price: $50 The Good: This is the best Gundam series ever! The Bad: To find out what happens to Camille and the other surviving cast members, you must see Gundam Double Zeta. Gundam ZZ is a series that is supposed to be a lot less serious than Zeta, and have a lot more little kids than Zeta had. That?s a horrible combination for any anime, and especially for Gundam. And The Ugly: The subtitles for the first episode are horrendous, I guess they were drunk when working on the subs for this episode. Either that or they were very tired cause there?s a lot missing. Introduction: Ever since I got interested in Gundam, all the fans would tell me is, ?Stop obsessing over Wing, there are better Gundams out there, just watch Zeta!? One by one, I would watch the other Gundams, and almost every time, it was better than Wing. Still, Zeta was only available on fansubbed vhs at the time, and not all of the fifty episodes had subtitles. So I decided to wait until it finally came out on HK DVD with English subtitles. About a month ago, the waiting finally came to an end, and the MI DVD set for Zeta was finally released with English subtitles. Not only was I happy about getting to finally see Zeta, I was happy that MI was the first to release it. They have recently been using fansub scripts on all of their recent projects, so I knew that the subs would be amazing. They were amazing...for the most part anyway, but at last I get to tell those fans that they were right. There are better Gundams out there, and Zeta is the best of them all! Animation/Mech Design: Being the series aired in 1985, you obviously can?t expect to see the dazzling animation styles of current animes like Cowboy Bebop or Jin Roh; but for 1985, the animation is pretty damn good. In the same way that you can say the animation for the original Gundam was good for its time, you can say the animation for Zeta is good for it?s time. Some of the backgrounds are more basic, but the character animation is top notch. The mech designs are some of the best I?ve seen out of any Gundam series. Not only do the Gundams look cool, but so do the mass produced suits, mobile armors, and other suits special to the series. Rating: 5/5 Music: The background music was good, but it never caught my ear or made me say, wow that was beautiful. Maybe that?s because the music is 17 years old, or maybe it?s because I was concentrating on how cool the show was. There?s nothing wrong with 17 year old music, heck, most of Metallica?s best albums came out in the 80's. The two opening songs were great, a lot better than the opening song to the first Gundam. They were also a lot different from the other songs for the other series. These songs are a little more mellow, matching the overall feel of the show. The ending song was ok, nothing to go bragging about though. Rating: 4/5 Video Quality: The Japanese R2's were used to make this set, so the video quality was wonderful. I never really noticed anything wrong with the video on the set. The DVD?s they used for the set weren?t perfect however. When played for long periods of time on some players, the disks tended to skip and freeze. My portable DVD player didn?t like this set too much. After playing half of the second DVD fine, it couldn?t make it through a whole episode without having a skipping/freezing problem, and it came to a point where I just gave up and played it on my other players. The skipping/freezing problem didn?t happen that often on my other players, but it would still happen after at least three or four hours of constant watching, but not all of the time. Rating (video): 5/5 Rating (disk quality): 3/5 Subtitle Quality: For the most part, the subtitles were fansub quality. However, the series was never completely fansubbed, and certain companies had some episodes that other companies didn?t have. So a number of different scripts were used in order to get the most fansubbed episodes possible. The result of this is that sometimes the names would be slightly different from episode to episode, like Fa and Pha. Another example is Zeon, they would have different spellings like Jion and Jeon. The final fansub chart looks like this: Fansubs: 1-4,7-42,47-48 HK original: 5-6. 43-46,49-50 Some of the fansubbed episodes after around episode 30 lose a bit of quality, but are still very good. The HK originals are understandable but can give you a headache. They get as good as a step below fansub quality, and they get as bad as the subs for the original Gundam set...and that?s bad. The worst episode subtitle wise however is the first episode. The first three or four lines have no subs, and then every now and then a line is skipped. Someone will talk and nothing will appear below. When there are lines, they are fansub quality however. Sometimes the subs are just wrong though. Jerid's insult about Camille makes no sense since he says, "Camille isn't that a man's name," when he's supposed to say, "Camille, isn't that a woman's name?" The subs get a lot better a minute or so into episode two, and are fansub quality. Like in most HK sets, there is only one opening and closing per DVD, and there are only subtitles to the songs on the last DVD, but they are HK subs. Also, most of the introduction parts before the episode title screen don?t have subtitles, only about ten or so have subtitles, and most of those ten are HK subs. This didn?t matter that much being the majority of the intros were just recaps from the previous episode. Rating: 4/5 Action: I was very impressed with the action scenes in this series. The Gundams were nowhere near invincible. They didn?t have any super weapons that could make them unbeatable like the Shining/God Finger in G Gundam, the Double-Busta Rifle in Gundam Wing, the Satellite Cannon in Gundam X, or the Moonlight Butterfly in Turn A Gundam. The only weapon that came close was the mega particle cannon that Char used. But that was bulky (big enough to be considered a small mobile suit), and didn?t have much accuracy. It wasn?t even part of his mobile suit, it had to be sent to him when he needed it. It was just good old beam rifles and beam sabers for the most part. What does this all mean you might be asking, well it means that most of the fights were evenly matched and it wasn?t obvious who was going to win from the start. That makes the fight scenes more exciting, and improves the anime overall. Rating: 5/5 Characters: To put it quite simply, this series has the best set of characters ever. All of the main surviving characters from the original return, and a whole new great cast of characters join the story. After seven years, some interesting things happen to the characters from the original. Most of these are spoiler worthy, so I will not mention them here. There are a lot more new types and artificial new types in this series than any other, and there are a lot more women piloting mobile suits in this series. Rating: 5/5 Story: The story for this series is definitely darker than any other Gundam series, a lot of important people die during the duration of the series. Zeta Gundam is the sequel to the original Gundam. The original series took place in UC 0079, and Zeta takes place in UC 0087, seven years after the One Year War ends in UC 0080. Gundam 0083 does a great job of connecting the two TV series. At the end of Gundam 0083, the calamity of Operation Stardust caused the Federal Forces conspirators to create an elite military organization called the Titans. Their goal was to combat terrorism and anti-Federation rebellion, but their barbaric acts made them become the enemies in Zeta Gundam. A prime example of their barbaric acts occurs two years before Zeta?s storyline. Taken from the deceased Gundamproject.com, ?In UC 0085, Titans forces commanded by Colonel Bosque Omu suppress a spacenoid demonstration at Side 1's "30 bunch" (its 30th colony) with deadly force; pumping nerve gas into the colony, the Titans kill the colony's 3 million inhabitants.? To combat the evil Titans, the AEUG (Anti-Earth Union Group) is formed. The AEUG is comprised of renegade Federal Forces members and former Zeon soldiers. Char, under the alias of Quattro Bajina, and the surviving cast of characters from the White Base are now fighting on the same side to bring down the Titans. So the side?s are now switched from the original series. For the most part, the Zeon are now the good guys and the Federation are the bad guys. The story begins when Char and a small group of soldiers go to Side 7 to retrieve the Titan?s new Gundam, the Gundam Mark II. At the same time, the hero of the story, Camille Bidan gets detained after getting into a fight with Titans ace pilot Jerid Messa. Char then begins his attack, and Camille escapes custody. Camille then hijacks one of the Gundam Mark II?s and meets Char. The AEUG group steals another Gundam Mark II and head back to their ship, the Argama, with Camille and two Gundam Mark II?s. This is only the beginning of a long and wonderful story. Rating: 5/5 Conclusion: This is definitely, without a doubt, the best Gundam series I have ever seen. I now understand what all of the buzz was about, and I?m glad that I have a high quality set of the series. It will last me until the R1's come out in America...whenever that will be. It?s amazing how many aspects were borrowed from the original and Zeta and used in the other Gundam series. It just shows how much these two series have influenced the Gundam world. History repeats itself many times in the Gundam world, even from the original to Zeta. If you consider yourself a Gundam fan, or even if you just saw the original and want more, then make it a point to see Zeta as soon as you can. Trust me on this one, you?ll thank me later. I just got this set in this week and let me tell you I am impressed. After seeing dissapointing subs on previous Gundam titles,I am pleased that MI did their homework and listened to the fans by hunting down the elusive fansubs that exist in pieces throughout the internet. Only a few episodes are subbed by the HK company and even those are semi understandable, your not missing much. My only complaint is some of the subs go off the screen or are cut off but its no biggie. Video is excellent, this must either be a R2 rip or a Laserdisc rip (I'm thinking R2) this series had a unique art style, with dark pastel-like colors and actually introduced multi color shading into Gundam compared to the original series which used ugly squiggly black lines to signify dark areas lol. Audio is mono, do not know whether the R2 rips digitally remastered the sound or not but its sort of strange if they didn't. But i'm listening through a TV anyway so the difference is not noticeable on my crappy setup. All in all this is a excellent release and I would give it a 9.5 out of 10. This is a must get if you have been wanting to see one of the most classic anime series of all time.

Well I gave a very detailed look into this set as I watched it with this review hehe. But at the end here are my final scores VIDEO: 5 AUDIO: 5 (best you can get with only mono) SUBS: 3 They did use fansubs but many of the fansub scripts were very badly done! It was decent, but the scripts here looked like they were done by amatuers. The first 30 some episodes have excellent subs though. I had to take points away there, but what really hurt the sub score was that the HK subs were really bad at times. Decent HK subs would be Sayuiki or Seikai No Senki, but these were engrish and with those military and political plot lines, things get messy. You can figure it out yourself, but the subs still suck in the HK originals. Episode 49 had VERY bad subs, these stuck out big time. But overall I would give the set a 3.5 or 4 out of 5 since most of it has decent subs. Its an average release of a great anime, alot of flaws. If you want details go into my very detailed review below :) *********************************************** Alright, been doing a quick review on some forum and I will post some of my comments here for an early review, I'm still watching the show so don't take the review totally serious. I will update this review as I watch the set. To note, the review below is for the 5 disc set that has no english subs, this is the new 6 disc set with english subs I'm reviewing. **************** SO FAR scores are: Video: 4.5 Audio: 5 Subs: 4 on fansubbed eps, while 2.75 - 3.25 on HK original subbed episodes. WOOHOO ZETA GUNDAM!!! Here is some first impressions, will post more as I get through the set but right now I will skim through the set Video is excellent, this probably is the R2's but its hard to tell because this show is old. It could be LD but the video is very crisp for such an old show, its hard to tell. Audio is mono, its an old show of course. First off in the first episode I was mortified to find that the first 3-4 lines were not subbed. I thought they forgot the subs but then they kick in. Sucks big time that the first 4 lines are not subbed for some reason. But the subs are there..... Kinda of dissapointed, these are very good subs and must be fansub, but theres quite a few missing lines here and there! WTF. Its not huge chunks, but missing sub here and there for the whole first episode. This was a big dissapointment. .... well it got worse. TONS of subs are missing. You will get a couple lines right then a sub or two sill be missing. Then it works and then another sub is missing. Whose the idiot who did this? It is fansubbed and its got the fansub warning, of course they screwed that up by having the fansubbing not for rent sub appearing during another characters line. Another problem noticed, openings and credits are CUT out. *shakes head*. They only appear once per disc. Also several timing problems with the subs that are there and quite a few mistakes. In the subs one person is mistaken for a womans name and they made the subs say man making the whole conversation about the name make no sense. As for the subs on the rest..... up to episode 4 is fansubbed, episode 5-6 is HK original . Not bad, they got names mostly right, but some strange english. Understandable though. They do use several wrong names though. Amuro Rei is given the same name as the 0079 set for example in the HK originals...... The HK original subs are pretty good though. Strange names is the main problem as always. Some main characters got there names right though at least But skimming on I see that the subs are: Fansubs: 1-4,7-42,47-48 HK original: 5-6,43-46,49-50 Subs do improve greatly with further episodes. It appears only episode 1 had issues Something that also bugged me was they didn't sub the openings. These usually are not plot related and just explain the universe and they use the same animation for several episodes, but they contain important info that is left out again It doesn't always happen, in some eps they sub these recaps and openings, and sometimes they dont. Opening song and credits are not subbed either. It seems that the fansub scripts used came from different sources of course as the sub quality varies as you get different spellings and translation styles, but they are all pretty good. The HK subs mix in chinese names with correct names. Large amount of things are named wrong in the HK original episodes, but as you can see, it seems that MI used fansub scripts for most of the show Pity about eps 5-6, I've seen those subbed readily in many places *shrug*. The first episode sucked, but after that the set really improved. The video is excellent, I would say its the R2's since the picture is so clear for such an old show. I can't confirm though as I have not seen the R2's but these are good. You get some minor pixelation in high motion scenes and there are quite a few instances of ghosting in this set, but not to bad. Picture looks real sharp and for such an old show it looks very clean and defect free. Audio as first impression stated is mono of course for this old show. No problems in audio, at least they didn't screw up like they did with Gundam X. Guess you can't screw up mono audio all that much. Watched episode 5&6 now which are the HK originals and they are kinda crappy subs. Show has alot of military terms and politics going on so they got confusing. Seen those episodes before so I knew what was being said but I know what the subs said were off or made little sense. It isn't bad. With only about 8 eps being HK its a good buy. Has its problems for sure, but it does have good subs on most of the episodes at least. Alright have now watched up to episode 32 on this set. Almost done here. The subs after the HK subbed episodes are great. Few errors here and there like normal but pretty much perfect fansubs. I have mentioned that the subs do diverge from each other a bit. Subs for this show are hard to come by and the source of scripts is apparently taken from all over the place. So what do you get? You get some funky translations in some parts and names change constantly though they basically are correct. For the most part for example the use Jion in the first 20 some episodes then they go to Zeon and Zion. Camille will be fine, even in the HK original episodes and then you get to episodes were they spell it Kamiyu and Fa is Pha. Its not bad at all its just kinda strange to get these. And about the funky subs, well apparently the quality of translation wasn't that hot with some subbers. Around episode 30 the english translation becomes rough. Up to episode 30 had some well done subs with a few errors in translations, but whoever subbed 30 and on seemed to be very loose with the translation. Names are all right except for those two mistakes made above with the two main characters, but they just spelled it how it sounded in Japanese. Don't get me wrong here, the subs are much better than the HK original subs. It's good english but its just obviously not as good as they could have done it. Never seen these translations anywhere but I suppose the scripts were not widely distributed. *shrug* Still got a way till I get to the bulk of the HK original subbed episodes as I mentioned above, but I do hope they improve. Episodes 5 & 6 used HK original subs and the subs were pretty bad. For the HK subs: Some names were correct, but most of the stuff was funky or chinese named. The subs themselves are quite bad though. Very engrish, almost every line seems like its missing a word or two to make it complete so the subs come off very badly. Now I watched Ayashi No Ceres and Turn A Gundam and understood them pretty well, but these subs did confuse me. The problem here is the show is very political and filled with military themes and these don't translate to HK subs well at all. You can understand what is going on most of the time but when you get to military talk or politics its just a bunch of gibberish. The Gundam ZZ set was weak in the same fields, but that show was alot easier to understand because it was very simple and was not like Zeta Gundam. So for right now, the HK original subs suck big time, while the rest of the set seems ok. If you take the first episode which has horrible subbing, and the 8 HK originals, you get 9 badly subbed episodes and 41 well subbed ones. Not bad, I keep the scores I gave it at the top. The video holds up well still but there is a problem that crept up that bugs me a bit, but for some reason around the 3rd discs, you start getting episodes where white lines seem to flash across the bottom of the screen every once in a while. One episode did it ALOT and was annoying me as it seemed to flicker, it went away though but still pops up in every episode I've seen so far. Not sure about this problem but its not bad at all. Just something to note. The audio and such still are good. *******UPDATE******** Well finally finished the set. The fansubs used from episode 30 and on were very strange. Obviously not to much care was put into these scripts as they were extremely easy with the translation. Its better than HK original, but at times it almost felt the same with some of the strange translations and errors in english. The HK subs that you get for the last episodes..... ick. The HK original subs in this set BLOW. Bad subs, at times its almost like watching the original 0079 set. Very engrish. Also the quality varies from episode to episode. To note, episode 49 for some reason has the WORST subs I have seen from a HK release in a long time. The other episodes were understandable but episode 49's subs were just a total mess of nonsense. All names are very wrong and not even the chinese names were used. Zeta Gundam became Gouyan or something like that. Much of what is said is just a bunch of gibberish and was a pain in the ass to figure out. After seeing so much Gundam one should be able to figure it out, but most of episode 49 made no sense sub wise. At least episode 50, the last one improved with some correct names and better translation, but it still was very rough. Political and military matters always come off being weird with the HK subs. Its understandable at least, and with prior knowledge of Gundam shows you should be able to get through these no problem. Its hard to rate the subs in this set because they are constantly changing :( I would say..... Episode 2-4, 7-30 Very good Episode 31-42, 47-48 Good but lots of errors and strange grammar Episode 1, 43-46, 49-50 Horrible, sometimes made no sense what is being said. Not bad at all, I would have to give the set an average rating only because of the inconsistency in the subs. This is the best Gundam series though. Everything after Zeta just came off as a knock off of 0079 and Zeta. And for those interested in this show as a stand alone, that is not a good idea at all. Much of the enjoyedment of the show comes from having seen the original 0079 so you need to know that to enjoy alot of it, also Zeta Gundam doesn't really have an ending. It just stops pretty much with a weak ending and you will need to see Gundam ZZ to get a sort of conclusion........ edited by AsukaXIkari on 20 Mar 2002 12:07 pm

Comment:
Eventhough Z gundam was released in 1986 in Japan, it is still one of the most populair series in Japan and Hong Kong. The original Z gundam DvD's are now released in Japan, it has many extra's and the graphics are improved. But the Hk DvD's are also great. The box contains five smaller boxes each containing one DvD. Unfortunaly there are no extra's featured in the Hk DvD version, but the graphics are improved. The story is almost the same as 0079. The reason why Z gundam is so populair in Japan is because, Z gundam is a very dramatic but yet a exciting story. The sounds are great unfortunaly I bought the version without the english subtitles. Eventhough the person that sold me the DvD said it did contain english subtitles. But still it is a very nice DvD.
