i was actually surprised with the quality of the video, i dont think that its quite dvd quality but then again how many hk sets are? however the last two episodes of the series are missing, bummer!
Audio:
also damn good, although i only use a regular small tv, i can tell if the sound is fucked up and its perfectly fine on this set.

doesnt the title speak for itself? no you say? is this an excuse for me to rant about one of my most favorite animes ever? indeed it is sir. well basically evangelion is a mech anime. only theres nothing really basic to it. the only thing that makes it a mech anime are the mechs, every other rule that mech animes have followed before are broken (well i dont know about them all). its about the human race fighting for survival against god who has decided that humans do not deserve to exist anymore, however this isnt really explained in black and white its just an assumption one would make after seeing the show. the animated in this show god-damn rocks, despite the fairly low budget that the project had it turned out to be quite fine animation, the last anime to be fully hand-drawn or so ive heard. the story will keep you on the edge of your seat as you fall in love with characters and somewhat hate the main character cause hes a prat. the story also has many controversial religious elements that arent all exactly clear but you get the idea. basically i cant reccommend this show enough to people, its so damn good! and also abit of a head-melter (confusing) but thats what i love about it most of all. btw if you buy this set, which you damn should, i dont advise watching the conclusive movies that follow the series they just ruin it all, instead look for episodes 25 & 26 they concluded the series in a much happy/less confusing way.

Wow, I really like this set. Just note that it's ep 1-24 only, and doesn't have 25-26. It does have the directors cut episodes 21-24 though, thats nice. Video Wow, a lot of the episodes look better, or equal to their official counterparts. Since the official DVDs look like they have tweaked colors, I even like this a tad better. Some minor pixelation in some scenes though, nothing too bad. 4/5 Audio Fine for me, normal stereo track. I'm no expert. Subs Very good. Episode 1-20 feature fansubs, they're near perfect with some minor timing problems, nothing too bad though. Directors cut episodes seem to be translated from Italian fansub scripts, since they call the Longinus Lance, Lancea Longini, and at one point there was one line that was totally in Italian. Guess they forgot to translate that one. Overall the Dir. Cut episodes are a little less in quality, and tend to be very literal, the're still watchable. It wasn't too big of a problem for me, since I also have most of the official DVDs, and know the translations. 4/5 Overall VERY good set. Just too bad the didn't include episode 25/26. (The only problem I had with this set was that disc 3 was scratched. Didn't know if this caused the hangups in some episodes on disc 3, but I've heard from some other people that they have the same problem. Guess some minor problems with the new pressings.)

Let's get the nitty gritty outta the way first... Video- not quite the R1 quality but good enough for me-4 Audio- my setup isn't exactly made for testing the sound but screams have never sounded so good!! - 5 Subs- Okay, they get the job done... everyonce in awhile you have to piece things together but nothing where you have to pause or anything. Content- Are you kidding? If you are reading this either you are bored or you really don't know yet. If you like anime you have to see evangelion. If you don't like anime you have to at least see evangelion to have a right to clown on it. This is the most entertaining and disturbing thing i have ever seen. You will endear yourself to the characters and the action is to die for. If you haven't seen evangelion and you can handle true emotional distress than pick up Evangelion ASAP!!!

MI picked up the ball where ADV dropped it. They put the director's cut of the TV series on dvd! That is reason enough to pick it up. Video is okay. Not as crisp as the R2 or R1. But still nice. 4 stars. Audio was decent enough. No real problems there. 4 stars again. Subs were pretty good, but could have stood an English speaker going over them one more time. Very watchable. 3 1/2 to 4 stars. And did I mention the extra footage in episodes 21-24? Very nice. This stuff really adds to the whole show and helps to decipher the movie better. Around 5 minutes of new stuff is sprinkled in thru these episodes. Buy it now!!

This set is unbelievable. Evangelion is a mind-blowing experience worth watching. This DVD set is defintately worth getting because of the added scenes of the director's cut. This alone makes it better to get over the R1 set. But now onto the review. Video - 4/5 I thought that the set was really good looking, but the problems I saw were that the set was a little dark compared to the R1 set (which was very vibrant and good looking). The set suffers from blockiness every once in a while, but not too often, just in overly dark scenes. The set may have been from and LD source, but there was a lack of rainbowing (which plauged the R1 release, especially in later episodes, which makes me think the ADV got lazy), but I'm more inclined to think that this is a really really good VHS transfer since there are some telecine edges every once in a while. Edit: NOT a VHS rip, the Telecine can happen from LD as well, and there is no distortion at the bottom. Seeing as Gainax can make so pretty lo-Fi DVDs (Case in point, End of Eva), it may have come directly from the R2, however, I'm not sure where it came from, be assured that the video is pretty crisp (so it's not VHS) Audio - 4.5/5 The audio was amazing in this set. Aside from the obvious no crackling, hissing, or humming, the set just sounds as good as the R1 release. Hands down an excellent rip. Edit: I heard some distortion as if the sound was a little too loud on an episode (can't remember which it was though). Subs - 4/5 The subs are nearly perfect in this set until 21-24 (which are the director's cut episodes). My guess is that since those are the director's cut episodes, they didn't have many sources, and had to do it themselves. All in all this set is so kick-ass, that it would be a shame not to get this. The only let down is that episodes 25-26 are NOT included. This isn't overly bad since those episodes were awful in my opinion, but if you're going to obsess over it, it would just be better to get this set, and then buy the last DVD. Either way, this set is by far way better than the R1 set in terms of content, the last 4 episodes in the director's cut just make it that much better.

Great quality. Some pixelation and motion blur here and there, around VHS quality.
Audio:
Great as well. Although not perfect, but almost. Sometimes it gets a little faint here and there, no real problems though.

One of the best series in anime, Evangelion is awesome. This set contains the Japanese version of EVA meaning it has the so called "director's cut" scenes. Meaning it's better than the american version. Eps 25 and 26 are gone cause they are replaced by the EVA Movies (Death&Rebirth and End of Evangelion). The subs are awesome, better than the adv versions in my humble opnion. The picture quallity is a little rough cause they stuff 24 eps on just 3 discs but still better than VHS. A must get.

This is one of the first anime that I have seen, I love this set but I really wish that it had finaltwo Episodes. As the fan of the series I miss them. But still this is good set, worth buying. Good video and audio, and I also liked subs used here. edited by CronoGuyver on 20 Mar 2002 3:43 pm

Well I got the official release and happy with that, will be much happier once I get the replacement remastered Vol.1 of course ;) I got this set just for the Director's Cut episodes. First note which I wish I could mark off half the stars on this rating for, is that this set is only 24 episodes and cuts out the last two episodes. This may not seem like much but these are VERY important episodes and play into the movie big time. Being a die hard Eva fan, I was severely dissapointed here. At least I got the show in several formats so I don't feel to bad. Video: Very good video here, colors are sharper in some parts over the official release, but the official release has a much better bit rate going for it and doesn't suffer much pixelation that you get in some sequences in this set. But for an HK set these are very good. There are some strange glitch with marks on the top of the TV that appear but just for a split second sometimes. The screen has a bit of jitter at times but this is the same as the R1. Having seen some of the R2's it appears that the screen jitter is something that exists there. Guess since the show was of lower budget at its time that the masters or the animation wasn't the hottest. Audio: No problems here, everything works fine. Sounds about the same as the official release, just no multiple languages like the official set. Subs: Very good subs, almost perfect at times. The only thing with the subs is the few errors and in a couple episodes there are some larger episodes. Couple lines of dialogue are missing here and there, as well as missing words every once in a while. One episode is missing its subs for its final minutes which sucked. The final four episodes on the set are the directors cut episodes and its a shame since they used HK originals. There not horrible subs, but after going from near perfect subs to the semi engrish was annoying. Its mostly understandable but the translation and such of some of the heavy plot elements was kinda mangled. The speech given by Kaworu in episode 24 seems very rough for example. You can figure it out though.

This set is okay. Picture 4/5 It's quite good and has come from LaserDisc. When the scene changes and some other times, there's a sort of fuzz at the top of the screen. But I got over it in about a second. Subs 4/5 Really good, but sometimes a few lines are missing. If i remember correctly... there was a final scene in one episode without any subs. Sound 4/5 Fine. No problems really. Overall 4/5 A really good set, but the only problem is episode 25 and 26 are cut out of this set for some reason. Although I think another HK DVD has the final 2 episodes.
