Comment:
This set is unbelievable. Evangelion is a mind-blowing experience worth watching. This DVD set is defintately worth getting because of the added scenes of the director's cut. This alone makes it better to get over the R1 set. But now onto the review.
Video - 4/5
I thought that the set was really good looking, but the problems I saw were that the set was a little dark compared to the R1 set (which was very vibrant and good looking). The set suffers from blockiness every once in a while, but not too often, just in overly dark scenes. The set may have been from and LD source, but there was a lack of rainbowing (which plauged the R1 release, especially in later episodes, which makes me think the ADV got lazy), but I'm more inclined to think that this is a really really good VHS transfer since there are some telecine edges every once in a while.
Edit: NOT a VHS rip, the Telecine can happen from LD as well, and there is no distortion at the bottom. Seeing as Gainax can make so pretty lo-Fi DVDs (Case in point, End of Eva), it may have come directly from the R2, however, I'm not sure where it came from, be assured that the video is pretty crisp (so it's not VHS)
Audio - 4.5/5
The audio was amazing in this set. Aside from the obvious no crackling, hissing, or humming, the set just sounds as good as the R1 release. Hands down an excellent rip.
Edit: I heard some distortion as if the sound was a little too loud on an episode (can't remember which it was though).
Subs - 4/5
The subs are nearly perfect in this set until 21-24 (which are the director's cut episodes). My guess is that since those are the director's cut episodes, they didn't have many sources, and had to do it themselves.
All in all this set is so kick-ass, that it would be a shame not to get this. The only let down is that episodes 25-26 are NOT included. This isn't overly bad since those episodes were awful in my opinion, but if you're going to obsess over it, it would just be better to get this set, and then buy the last DVD. Either way, this set is by far way better than the R1 set in terms of content, the last 4 episodes in the director's cut just make it that much better.
