Reviews for Gensou Maden Saiyuki Part 1 Perfect Collection

Overall:

Video:

Decent video. Usually pixelation whenever the video moves at all. Not awful, but it can be pretty annoying. Nothing like the third Yu Yu Hakusho set, that was just horrible.

Audio:

Perfect audio, nothing wrong with it. It's worth noting that the Japanese dialogue and the American dialogue seem to be a bit different. The American version seems to add a lot more dialogue and a lot more insults (which is halarious) than the Japanese version.

Subtitle:

Checked out a couple episodes. Good subtitles. Also an option for translation of signs and such.

Comment:

This is a pretty good series so far. Can't wait to start part 2. The story is average. The fight scenes are below average. The characters are funny as hell. If a group of friends went out on a quest to save the world this is probably a lot closer to what it would be like. =P

On episode 1, pixelation is the worst in the entire 26 episodes. On average, for 3 out of 5 episodes will have mild (significantly milder than ep 1) pixelation which occurs on fast movement (ie in OP) or on raining scene. Pixelation is not that bad which deters your viewing pleasure. Saiyuki does not have sophisticated action or CGI (compare to Vandread), so the mild pixelation does not jeopardize enjoyment of this series.

Audio:

Loud and clear. JP and EN sounds equal volume to me.

Subtitle:

Good subtitle. Have seen one episode which EN subtitle sticks.

Comment:

A good HK copy to replace for good EN subtitle. Although pixelation is expected and is found, it will not stop me by purchasing FX Saiyuki part2 (well, MI/AV Saiyuki part1 has 26 eps, and I've read there is also some pixelation issue so it's up you). Remember, this is a HK set!

I have to say the video on this set is NOT spectacular. It is pixely as can be, but I wouldn't call it unwatchable. Still rather disappointing.

Audio:

The audio is top notch, no problems on either track.

Subtitle:

R1 ripped subtitles that are easy to read and even include a second song and sign only track. This is perfect.

Comment:

Chapters: 5 chapters per episode, Opening, Part A, Part B, Part C, and Ending/Preview. The combined Ending/Preview chapter and the times the chapters weren't exactly timed right were a bit of an annoyance. The only time I ever really use chapter breaks are to skip the ending and get on with the preview, and I can't do that. Menus: R1 ripped and in English. No scene select, however, so you must do it manually within the given episode. Also the first disc's menu doesn't default to the "Play" option but the other two do. Extras: Disc One has Production Sketches, Disc Two has a clean opening and closing, and Disc Three just has a clean closing. Packaging: The same FX 3-disc gatefold you're probably used to. The artwork is good and the back of the box is readable. This would have been a perfect set if they'd just cut back on those pixels a bit. It honestly has some of the worst video I've seen out of FX. Still a good, fun, anime you might want to pick up. The characters are interesting and the story engaging, which of course are the most important things. I hope that perhaps the second set will fix some of the problems of the first.
