First disc and no pixelation but the second had some like the other reviewers said. I also noticed some "marching ants" around objects in this set, but its not big enough for you not to ignore it. Other then that It has nice and bright colors. The animation is very well done too.
Audio:
Audio is nice and loud with dolby digital 5.1 I think. The japanese voice was really good along with the English Dub.

The story in this is very good, the characters are very likeable, and Abenobashi is very funny. Its very much like fooly cooly, much like other people said.

The first disc gets a "5" on the video front from me. The second gets a 3 to a 3.5 It's not FX Noir bad, as someone stated before, but it does pixelate a bit. Slight action doesn't really cause it, but if there is a LOT going on at once on the screen it is reaaaaally noticible. Distractingly so. It is in anamorphic widescreen though, and that makes up for a lot (for me at least). The colors are nice and bold, and for the most part the second disc holds everything together. Is it an encoding issue? Dunno, but I'm disappointed.
Audio:
The best it can be. You have all the tracks that the R1 version had (including the audio tracks for the "bleeps" and "Boings" when a "fun fact" pops up when you select the fun fact subtitle track. Audio is good. Nice and clear. The dub sucks (those god awful Southern accents that ADV made its actors use are like nails to the chalkboard though... Does "Osakan dialect" really sound that irritating to Tokyo-ites? Just curious).

The Japanese language track would switch to English between every episode on the first disc, but that didn't happen on disc 2. Weird, but no biggie. You can just switch back. Abenobashi is a fun series. The characters are likeable, there is a story running through it, and it's interesting how the animation style changes with every episode. I personally believe that Abenobashi is 10Xs better than Excel Saga. There was no human emotion in Excel at all. Abenobashi is really all about humanity and its fragileness and the ability of others to accept what they have to and move on. I didn't like how they kind of copped out in the end, but the ending does make more sense if you rewatch episode 9 (I think it's 9) again after episode 13. And the "Hollywood Movies" episode is CLASSIC! "Would you like some f*cking ketchup or some f*cking mustard on your f*cking hotdog, you f*cking cowboy?" I recommend this Abenobashi set. There are a few instances of blockiness on the last disc, but you can get past that. Especially for less than $20 for the whole show. Really, you can't beat that with a stick. Even a very BIG stick.

Gainex has a deffinate gem with this title. Longer then FLCL at 13 episodes but not long enough to make the series to repetitive. Nice mix of have the semi serious episodes mixed in also. Includes a prievew on the first disk and some rather messed up aternative scenes on the second disk where the voice actors went overboard.

The episode distribution really kills this one... 4-9. Soooooo, the first disc looks like as good as an R1 release, and the second disc looks pretty rough in comparison. So, it evens out to a fairly average score. The pixelation on the second disc is very noticeable, but not so badly to drag this release's video score below 3.5 (considering how nice the first disc looks).
Audio:
Great audio. The opening track to this series is one of the most addictive songs I've possibly ever heard. The english VA cast has quickly become tied as my favorite dub (nothing will ever completely edge out Cowboy Bebop). The japanese track is just as clear, though I didn't find the voices to fit the characters as well (it's all personal taste on that point anyways, though).

I've gotten to the point where I'm buying anything that has the Gainax name attached to it... FLCL was so wonderfully bizarre, and hilarious.. but I was almost glad that the mayhem ended after a perfect 6 episodes, as the mayhem may have become repetetive after that. Abenobashi, however, manages to carry on almost the same level of insanity in its episodes... but pulls it off for 13 episodes as there is so much variety to the types of insanity. Everything geek is parodied or paid homage to. My personal favorite episode finds the show's duo in a Hollywood stage version of their home-town.. packed with so many movie references and parodies that it will make your head spin. The character development is also wonderful in this series... you really fall for the lead characters, and you're torn between wanting them to get home, and wanting them to keep having ridiculous adventures in world after world. HIGHEST recommendation possible. Right up there with FLCL for me. Review Equipment: DVD Players: Sony DVP-NS315 TV: Sony Trinitron 32" Flatscreen

The first disc of the set was perfect...but the later episodes of the second disc really suffered from pixelation during movement. And the movement is pretty crazy in some parts. I guess I would describe it as almost FX Noir-bad, which is a good description because people have varying opinions on just how bad that is. It's not the same problem, but it has about the same effect.
Audio:
Good high quality audio to be found here. Includes 4 tracks, Eng/Jap and Eng/Jap with Note noises (the Vid-Note things that comment on references and such) I prefer to watch the notes without the little noises, however. And I have to wonder if taking out those two tracks would've saved on the pixelation.

Chapters: 5 chapters per episode, Opening, Part A, Part B, Ending, and Preview. Menus: They're R1 ripped, no problems. Extras: One series preview and one set of outtakes, so not all the extras from the R1 are here. Packaging: Inexplicably, this uses the old style double disc gatefold case rather than the keep-case design of recent releases. I like it that way, though. I'ts VERY shiny and glossy and is reminiscent of the Hellsing FX packaging. Very nice stuff. Great set, except for the pixel problems, and a great show that will definitely make you laugh. Watching Sasshi drool over pirated stuff on the trip to the Hong Kong world is escpecially funny in this context X_X Make sure to read the Vid-Notes to get all the references at some point, even though I believe they missed a few. Such as this one part where the robot's mask comes off to shoot flames, which is obviously pointing at Gaiking (not sure of Japanese name, however that could be it right there, sounds like it...). That was one of the shows released as Force Five in the US. It's doesn't go as far into strange territory as FLCL (because really, could anyone keep up something like that for 13 episodes? Honestly now...) But it's still pretty weird, and it has a good story behind the mayhem too. Reviewed on: Sylvania DVD Player, Generic DVD-ROM
