Reviews for Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Video:

Although this appears to be an LD (Laserdisc) rip, the quality of it certainly belies the age of this anime since Nausicaa was made in 1984. Everything appears detailed, crisp and clear with background and character details in particular easy to appreciate due to this very good video transfer. Quite competent indeed.

Audio:

Again, I can see no problems here as everything sounds clear enough and the music and sound effects are both allowed to shine with the great audio transfer that has been bestowed in this rip.

Subtitle:

Ostensibly the single best aspect of this disc, the subtitles are near enough nothing short of excellent. Grammar and Engrish problems are virtually non-existent on this release with the subtitles being completely understandable and easy to follow. Obviously adapted from a fansub source, this is without question one of the finest subtitling jobs I have seen on any HK DVD to date.

Comment:

A milestone in anime given the treatment it deserves, Nausicaa by Anime Studio deserves a place in everyone's collection. I dare not go into what makes this anime so damn good since it would spoil it but trust me when I say that until a Japanese Region 2 rip rears it's head, this is the definitive version of Nausicaa that money can buy. Highly recommended.

Definitely LD. But most of the time a very nice looking LD rip.

Audio:

Sounded good, though it wasn't Digital or anyhting. Nice for what it was.

Subtitle:

Very good, but damn... they didn't sub everything... Oh well, I guess. Other than a few (important) unsubbed lines, they were good.

Comment:

worth picking up for cheap. Hope this gets released in Japan soon, so there'l be a nice MAC rip...

This movie was made in 1984, im not sure, but its very old. And this version is not a remasterized one, so the image looks good, but not great.

Audio:

Stereo, just common stereo.

Subtitle:

Good subs.

Comment:

Nausicaa! She is a God(ess)! Video-- (3.5/5) The video wasn't great. It was GOOD. Nothing to complain over, but still not all that hot. Audio-- (4.5/5) Almost perfect! Other than some occasional scratchiness, the audio is Godly. ^_^ Subtitles-- (4/5) Very good! A little bad grammar here and there, but still very, very good. Content-- (5/5) Miyazaki is my favorite director of all time, along with Takahata. I would HIGHLY suggest buying the Ghbli set, as they will never come out on R1. This is a great flick.

In between mediocre fansub quality and expert subbing-- that is to say, they do the job you paid them to do. Gotta love this company (Anime Studio?), they are the ownage! edited by ashibaka on 18 Jul 2002 9:50 am

[[[[Yea you are right.. ;o) its fixed now sorry about that.]]]] Can't find an American version of Nausicaa in your locality? Well, neither can I. This excellent Ghibli movie deserves to be released to the American market, but until then, here's what I thought of the import version: Video: Broke up into glitchy boxes for a few frames at one point in the movie; also, at about two different points, a big hole is punched in the corner of the film, perhaps for alignment purposes @_@. Otherwise, has the full clarity of the original, which might not be as good as today's films but is still excellent. Audio: No problems. Nausicaa has very indecisive background music -- it can't figure out whether to play or not play! But I'm pretty sure this isn't the fault of the people who subbed it. Subtitles: This is an excellent import! The subtitles aren't perfect, but they did make the movie enjoyable, and not once did they fall behind of what was actually being said like they do in those horrible Anime Cartoon productions. Other: Buy this movie. It's pretty cheap, there are no major problems with the import, and you can show it to friends who think anime is all about naked women and huge robots. Nausicaa owns j00. This is one of my favorite all time feature length anime films, as well as one of my favorite manga series of all time. The plot and characters are some of the greatset ever created in my opinion, and while it is missing a few things from the manga this movie is one of the closest manga to anime transitions I have ever watched. It's a true classic in every sense of the word! Video quality- It's not quite perfect(ie; remasterd), but then again for a movie this old it's really quite awesome. The DVD is double sided, which helps as well. A friend of mine who has the r2 Ghibli set told me that it looks the same as the r2 DVD when she watched it with me. I haven't seen the r2 original yet, so I can't confirm this. But seriously as old as this film is the video quality really surprised me the first time I watched it. Audio quality- Audio quality is great! I am not an expert on thaudio, but it sounds like real 5.1 dts to me when I pump it through my HTS. No complaints here, the levels remain constant throuhout the whole movie and they sound awesome! Subtiitle quality- I thought the subs were great, but I noticed a couple mis-spellings. My friend with the r2 version said the subs were good, but they weren't the same as the subs on her DVD, which lead me to believe they are fan subs. They're way to good to be HK originals, but not quite perfect(but not far from it either). Great overall though. This was a great buy for me, and a safe buy for any fan of this movie or of the manga. Hard to go wrong here. But from what i've seen it also seems like it's hard to find this DVD(without buying the whole Ghibli HK DVD set), so good luck if you're trying to find it!
