It's confusing because the story is confusing. Really, better subtitles would only have improved the names, they wouldn't have aided your ability to understand this series. It needs to be watched at least twice before you can really pick up on the subtleties.

Something you should know: The Five Star Stories series is totally awesome and alone justifies learning Japanese to enjoy. I first saw this movie on a really ghetto copy of a copy of a fansub, so even _this horrible transfer [vhs rip] was better than that. Although the subtitles are totally jacked [those mysterious "Chinese names"] you can still get the names by listening to it. And honestly, the story is really confusing even still in my perfectly-translated official manga. This movie is only the _introductory chapter to the story, the first 2 1/2 manga or so, which leads you into eons of really neat and gorgeous mecha fantasy action. Get the fansub if you can, but it's nice to have this copy once you know the story and better subs don't matter.

Video:
not too great although there really isnt any other choice.
Audio:
again there is no other choice but they arent really bad.
Subtitle:
poor subtitles. they change the names for no reason. the subtitles are very quick sometimes. the movie is confusing enough as it is.
Comment:
this is a wonderful beautiful movie. it is probably more appealing to those who have read the manga but even if you havent it will make you want to buy it. it makes more sense you have read the manga because it is a long confusing storyline and the subtitles dont help much. i would highly reccomend watching this becuase it is one of the coolest things ever created.

Not as super as it could be, about VHS quality. Don't let the blurry picture distract you, though, the art in this movie is so beautiful and intricate, with excellent colors. Mamoru Nagano is an incredible artist
Audio:
Reasonable.
Subtitle:
Engrish. It has a very confusing plot [you may have to watch it a few times] but better subtitles couldn't have helped that. The names are hella messed up... Sopp--> Sonbu, Lachesis-->Rurokyoso or something ridiculous like that. You would do better to listen to the audio to get the names than to read the subtitles, but all the rest is as understandable as this movie can get [the whole series is way intricate and mysterious.]
Comment:
Don't believe the rating stars, this is really one of the prettiest movies ever made. The end culminates with a mecha battle, with some of the coolest mecha designs you'll find. Again, it's a confusing movie, but only because it is based on such a confusing [and totally awesome] story! after you've watched this a few times, you may want to start buying the manga [the movie is the first few chapters of an ever-increasing series.] Definitely a gem that will add class to any collection.

Well, it may not be the worst dvd EVER. but it's one of them. I watched this anime fansubtitled originally. It is a very wonderful movie, and I watch it quite a lot. (I've seen it seven times, I think.) So, I bought this dvd. I could tell you horror stories about how BAD it was, and how I sat through an hour and ten minutes of pure ENGRISH. *_* Video-- (2.5/5) Very blurry, and grainy. My three-year-old fansub looks better, and it sat in a box in a storage building for a year while I was moving. Horrible. -_-;;; Audio-- (3/5) I don't want to talk about this. Every time I watch anime, I turn the volume ALL the way up on my surround sound. (Sometimes, the surround sound won't wokr, though!) I did so here too. Then, I could hear about the SAME quality as my old fansub has. Subtitles-- (0/5) These make me weep. Content-- (5/5) The movie is awesome! I wouldn't suggest buying this dvd, though. Buy the fansub, or the R2. (If you know Japaneese.) Overall DISC quality-- (0/1,000,000) AAAAAAAH!

Geesh, more shit that I just tossed in the trash. The story sucks too, so I wonder what in the hell made me buy it to begin with. VIDEO: Blah. It looks like a VHS transfer or something. Granted, it's old school 1980 anime, but still, looked pretty freaking crappy to me. AUDIO: Assuming it was a VHS transfer, this explains the audio. Piss poor. SUBS: Heh, I think I could make more sense by trying to learn chinese and reading those subs than the english ones. GARBAGE!!! OVERALL: If you want a 14.95$ frisbee then go for it.

There are so many problems with this release. I know Five Star Stories is an old anime, but this puts it to shame. Video- 2 out of 5. Video is way too bright, even if you tone down the brightness on your tv. There's alot of color bleeding and some jumps in the video. I felt like I was staring at the sun when I watched this. It really looks like a c- quality fansub, couldn't even say it was an LD rip. Audio- 3 out of 5. 2 channel stereo, low volume, some hissing. Really bad considering this is a DVD. Subtitles- 0 out of 5. The subs suck big time, not to mention that the movie is already confusing on it's own. Tons of grammar mistakes. definitely an in-house sub job, more than likely half-assed translations from the chinese subs. Well there you have it, another crap release. I don't understand how these hk companies can release some pretty good stuff and just rush some other projects.

Well got to see this at a local anime shop. Had the AS version and reviewed that one but I've seen this AC version as well. Its the exact same disc and the AS disc is just a rip of it. So the review is basically the same. Audio is a horrible mess with a brightness problem, looks VHS or a totally screwed up LD transfer. But the video is way to bright. Audio, nothing special here, nothing really wrong. Subs are the main killer here as they make absolutely zero sense. Same as the AS set. The movie itself is pretty bad, I went and hunted down a script online just so I could figure out what the hell happened in the film. Obviously the subs were nothing compared to the script.
