Disclaimer: This applies only to the 5-disc set. I'm interested in the 4-disc but I haven't seen it yet... Studio: Anime Studio Episodes: 1-49 Video: 4/5 Soft but clean and neat, probably due to either TV ripping or older, hand-drawn animation. Audio: 5/5 No real problems... all of Guy's shouting was preserved. ^_^ Subtitles: 1/5 This is quite possibly one of the worst HK releases ever. None of the subs make much sense, all the names are incorrect (except for one instance of "Mamoru" in episode 48), and the timing is horribly off. While the meaning is there, it's placed under a layer of incomprehensibility. Buyer beware. Chaptering: Episode to episode, no breaks. Bonuses: None. Menus: Silent and still, in English. Play All, Chapter, Subtitles. Content: The Prologues are cut out of every episode after the first on each of the 5 discs. Impression: Terrible. Hopefully the 4-disc will be better.

GaoGaiGar is a very interesting series with a transformers feel to it. Typical science fiction with big robots and an evil force trying to enslave the human population for their own dasterdly deeds. I particularly liked it. It really is a kid's show but it can satisfy the big-robot-junkie too. Now, mind you, I have the old 5 disk set, (I think) and so I will set my review to that. I haven't seen the new, but from the reviews, it seems like they still have a long way to go on the subtitiles. The video is pretty good, not too bad on a flat-screen TV. Sound is fine too. My problem is the subtitles. They kept changing the character's names, their special attacks, and so forth. Not constant at all. Terrible translation, but you can catch on quite quickly. Over all, not too bad. I recommend it.

I've never seen the GaoGaiGar 5DVD set so I don't know how much better this 4DVD set is but here's the ratings. Video - 3.5/5 The video isn't "bad" at all its just that there are so many episodes crammed on one disc ( sometimes 14 eps ). The video is soft and looks like a Tv/VHS/LD rip but definitely not DVD. Other than that there are no video problems throughout all 49 eps. Audio - 4/5 No audio problems throughout Subs - 3.5/5 Some names are wrong, some are literally translated, and some are very close. Guy = Kai HyouRyu = Ice Dragon EnRyu = Fire Dragon There are some timing errors where the subs will be either one line ahead or one line behind the dialogue. And of course there are typos. Other than that, I had no trouble understanding what was going on at all times during the show. I was very pleased with this set and I will stick with it until either it gets released in R1 or FX releases a Gaogaigar Perfect set. Overall this set gets a 4/5

All of these reviews are refering to the old 5 DVD version, there is a new 4 DVD version is out, and people are saying that the new subtitles that are included are an improvement on the old set...

This is one of the first sets I bought that were HKDVDS. It would be great if I knew japanese, but I dont. I think I could invent my own story that would make more sense than these subtitles do. They are worse than the old Cowboy Bebop set... Utter garbage.

Everything on this dvd set is really nice, and I mean it, execpt for the subs and they are EXTREMLY horrid. It's better to just switch off the subs, it makes more sense =)
