Great video.... very clean picture with no jaggies or blotching

I DO NOT understand how the other reviewers could miss this??? We have a very big problem here, simply that the audio on the Japanese track is only partially there. It is as if it were a "hearing impared" track. They subtitle the noises being made even, but background speech is completely missing. You often end up reading subtitles for spoken lines that SHOULD HAVE been there, but are not. English Dub is fine, but I did not buy it for that - although the English dub sounds thin and in Mono... based mostly out of your center channel.

My friend and I wasted good money on these, having both bought it thinking it to be one of the better versions... WRONG!!! If you want English Dub, it's OK. I am sure there may be better dubbed audio on the FOX version. The audio drops on the Japanese track make this a good $10 - $11 wasted.

Really great video image in widescreen; appears to be ripped from a R2 or R3 DVD. There was one scene where the image froze for a second, but other than that, the images are supurb. No logos or e-mails.
Audio:
Terrific audio, with no defects detected on my ordinary TV set.

Also of note -- the HK DVD includes the legal warning at the start, followed by the marching May introduction, before going right into the film, instead of the menus. Nevertheless, this is a must-get, especially since the R1 Fox version lacks a lot that the HK DVD has (Fox's has pan & scan, English auduo & subs only, and video straight from Fox's film masters). For the same amount of money or less, you can get the HK version. It'll probably get interesting in 2004, when Buena Vista gets the rights to Totoro.

This is a wonderful movie! BUY IT!! >_ Video-- (4.5) This is just slightly scratchy here, and there. Nothing big, but it's still annoying! >_ Audio-- (5/5) Wow! This easily has the best audio in the Ghibli set! Subtitles-- (3.5/5) Eh. They're OKAY. Considering how this movie doesn't have very much dialougue, I doubt that it's a problem. Even then, they're not bad, really. Just not what I'd hope for! Content-- (5/5) Miyazaki is my favorite anime director, along with Takahata. I would seuggest buying the Studio Ghibli Set to anyone, as the R1s will NEVER be released. It's a very fine set, with movies enjoyable for anyone.

Just to add something to the previous comment. Video and sound is good, no problems there. The subs are good as well, but there are some spelling errors, lines missing and mistimed once or twice for a few seconds. It's somewhat stupid that there are lines missing since this is not a movie with a lot of text.
