Video:
There was noticeable pixelization present in the fast moving scenes. The first few episodes also featured quite a bit of graininess. It got better from the second disc onwards though.
The animation style used here is quite unique in that it gives you an actual fairy tale feel. The characters are all elegantly styled and look far more graceful then they should. It's a staple of shoujou anime but this one seems to take it to extremes. It isn't a bad animation style persay but just be ready to deal with more pretty boys then you can shake a stick at.
Audio:
No problems here. Audio is perfect.
The English Dub of this show is surprisingly true to the subtitles. It doesn't stick to them religiously but it is pretty close. As for the dub itself, it isn't the best job out there. Thankfully, Nanami's voice actress sucks so bad that you will pretty much feel like giving Oscars to everybody else.

Comment:
This show surprised the hell out of me. It was pretty much an impulse buy for me and I didn't know what I was getting into. Then I went out and read a review. One thing from the review has stuck with me since then, 'this show is from the creator of Sailor Moon,' and 'this show is meant to be what Sailor Moon was supposed to be.' As you can imagine, I immediately tabled it for viewing at a later date. In the meantime I ran across works that were far inferior to this one in terms of plot.
I finally got around to viewing this show this past Tuesday and I was blown away. There is so much in this anime in terms of symbolism, foreshadowing and mystery that it immediately cemented itself as one of my favorites. The only other show that had this much story to tell is RahXephon and I can pretty much say that the characters in this show are far more developed then Xephons. That probably has to do with a higher episode count though.
The characters you are going to become familiar with are introduced in typical anime fashion. One episode is dedicated to each of them and their pasts and hidden secrets are extrapolated on. However, this show is unique in that it takes what you learn about the characters in those opening episodes and goes further with it in future episodes. The characters are fleshed out much more in this fashion and you really get into their minds. However, this is also where the show is at its weakest because if you can't stand the characters at the beginning then you're out of luck since that's all you're going to see.
Another weakness of the show is repetition. The little fairytale about Utena's childhood is repeated ad nauseum. Hell, I can appreciate stylistic decisions like this but after the fifth time I saw that little fable, I was ready to throw my remote at the tv screen. There is also a great deal of repetition in various other scenes but that is less annoying then the fairytale.
And now, let's get to the shoujo overtones of this show. It isn't blatantly, hit you over the head Will and Grace, obvious which was a bit of a relief. You have the obvious relationship between Anthy and Utena but it is actually pretty understated up till the last arc begins. And even then you are left guessing as to what they actually mean to each other. Hell, you may even come away with a different reaction then the one I had.
That is what makes the show great though. It is full of mystery and will leave you guessing right up till the end. The ending is also pretty well done and indicative of the type of show this is.
Overall, I would give it a 9.5 out of 10. It doesn't get a whole lot better then this and I can't believe I'm saying that about a Shoujo anime.
