The quality is good (R1 rip), but it has its problems. First off, I had to use a standalone dvd player (pioneer dv-500, made in '97) and my dvd rom drive. when I watched it on my dvd player, there was noticable pixilation in many of the scenes on the first episode alone. Also, I noticed some of what looked like pieces of green poping in and out of certain scenes. The biggest problem was that in middle of episode 1 (about 25 min.) the disc would freeze for 2 - 5 seconds, then. it would continue for another few minutes. The freezing problem has only happened with two other dvds I have, and they weren't as frequent. One other thing is that when I chose "Play All" from the menu, the disc would freeze and then my dvd player would eject it. When I used my dvd rom drive to check it out, most of the problems didn't occur, such as the freezing, and pieces of green. There was still some pixilation, but it wasn't as bad as with the other dvd player. I also noticed with the dvd drive was that there were some white lines that flickered for less than a second during some episodes. I don't know if that was due to the transfer to this disc or just the quality of the series itself. One other thing is that the quality of the film. Most of the time, it doesn't look very vibrant (similar to the quality of Evangelion), but I think even the R1 aren't that sharp. watching on my dvd drive, I thought the quality kept jumping, going from the quality previously mention, to really, really sharp (Like it was remastered) and then back again, followed by some pixilation. Please note that this based on the first disc alone. I haven't gotten to the other 4 disc yet. 3-25-04: I no longer have this set since this was deemed defective by the seller and had to return it for a refund, but I did look at the second and third disc and they still had the problems, but to a lesser degree

Its quite good, but the japanese is noticebly lower than the english dub, really noticble. When I watched it on my computer, I had to set the volume towards maximum to hear anything in japanese, and still couldn't hear everything. (Note that I only used some standard computer speakers, nothing too fancy or high tech), but when I switched to english, it was blasting loud. This also occured with my regular dvd player and tv (51" Sony)but not as dramatic. One other thing is that I wasn't sure if certain sports had sync problems for a breif second. I could swear during some scenes the lips would continue going on after the audio stopped less than a second ago. It was minor and not that noticable, but.....

I really don't know what to say exactly. This is a good set for the price I paid (I actually paid about $26 altogether through ebay and this is a 5 disc set), with subs and video that ALMOST reflects the R1 set. still with all the problems I noticed, ( or maybe its just my set alone) I would rather get the R1 set. But if you like GTO and aren't too concerned with perfect quality, then by all means take this set, because it is worth the money, and it is an execellent series. 3-25-04: As I said, it turns out my set was defective, but I still had video problems that the previous reviewer mentioned. So anyone reading this may want to rely on the other review for information, though mine may have some valid points as well

I watched the majority of the series on the worst possible set-up: Microsoft Xbox using an RF connection to a 14-inch portable with one speaker. This was purely for reasons of laziness ? I could watch it in bed! However, I did watch a number of episodes on my best possible set-up: Pioneer 636 standalone using a RGB video-only scart cable connected to a Hitachi 28-inch flat widescreen with a Dolby Digital/Pro-Logic amp. On both set-ups all 5 discs played perfectly with no playback faults. There did sometimes appear to be an odd pausing at the end of Next Episode Previews on Discs 1 and 2, but since the players did not ?stutter? or register a ?complaint? this might be due to the way the episodes were collated. In video terms this appears to be a DVD R1 rip and the picture is generally clear with no major disruptions. There is evidence of pixelisation, particularly during the action-packed scenes, but I saw no instances of heavy macro-blocking. The video artefacts are understandable considering there are around 8 episodes per disc. I?ve seen a lot worse and nothing spoiled my enjoyment. I can only assume the picture quality will differ according to your preferred set-up. This is not a straight 1:1 copy; it does not resemble the FX version. When, and only when, you select ?Play All? on the title screen an animated sequence featuring the MI logo appears. (See screenshots 1-4). Also, at least one episode per disc features the MI logo in the top right hand corner. It appears for around 15 seconds and then disappears. (See screenshot 14). I?ll point out more of the apparent differences between the MI and FX versions throughout the review. When I make a reference to a Screenshot Number, please look at the shots I've supplied and please also try and refer to the FX review screenshots ? I?ve tried my best to capture exactly the same screens for purposes of comparing and contrasting. However, I?m only making comparisons with the FX version because people will want the best Perfect Collection. This does not mean that the MI version is without its own merits.
Audio:
I watched the show in Japanese and it was clear with no distortions or unintentional variations in the set volume. If you have a Pro-Logic set-up, dialogue is focused on the centre speaker, but there are instances of the rear speakers coming into play such as an echo-effect during a particular flashback scene. I only spot-checked the English audio and from what I listened to it seemed just as clear as the Japanese.

The packaging for this Perfect Collection is exactly the same as the old MI version! Check out the info page on the IA reviews if you?re curious. If you?re buying on eBay you?re going to have to look out for "English Language" since there?s nothing else to distinguish between the two. The disc faces are printed in nice pastel colours with black outline/shadow drawings of some of the characters. However, I have to say I prefer the FX packaging (from what I've seen of it). For some reason MI made no real effort with this set unlike its FY and Berserk collections. The title screen and all the menus are animated and easy to navigate. They?re okay, but do not look as polished as the R1/FX equivalents, which have the school theme (See screenshots 5-7). Episodes are divided into Opening Credits/Part A/Part B/Closing Credits/ Next Episode Preview. However, you cannot select these individual sections from the Chapter Select menu as in the FX version. It?s only on the later discs that the ?eyecatches? (See screenshots 15 and 16) appear to divide each episode half. They are all subbed and from what I saw all English dubbed as well. The Next Episode Previews are all subbed. However, sometimes lines of dialogue are used as a voiceover thus muting the characters you can 'see' speaking on-screen. This makes it look like there are missing subs ? there aren?t. The ?SEE YA NEXT TIME? screen (See screenshot 18) only appears on the later discs. At the very end of the Preview for Episode 13 a still from a scene in Episode 1 appears. Strange! There are NO EXTRAS! There?s nothing else to say about that. On the face of it there is very little to recommend this over the FX version, especially now that FX has become more competitive in terms of pricing. (Incidentally, I ordered the FX version from eBay and received this set ? this was before the price drop so I was initially saving more than $10.) If you can get hold of this set ? or the MAC if it is the same ? cheaply, and trust my judgement of the English subs, then don?t hesitate to buy this. However, remember there is poor-looking packaging, different menus, white subs and no extras! Also consider this set if you want Chinese subs in some shape or form. Despite the omissions and differences, I actually like this set and, I think, the only set I would swap it for are the R1 originals. Series Comment: Wonderful! GTO uses a familiar premise ? one that?s recognisable if you have read or seen To Sir With Love ? and in many instances it is predictable and clichéd. So is Fawlty Towers. It?s the sheer style, energy and delivery that makes GTO such a fantastic show. It mixes drama, humour and perversity in such a way that nothing is unbalanced. True, there are fillers, but that doesn?t mean the laughter stops. Naturally, the star of the show is Onizuka himself and Takagi Wataru simply excels in the role. Superb! Closely behind are the great Mitsuishi Kotono and Nagashima Yuichi as the Vice Principal, who seems to get so agitated and frustrated you?d think he actually might pass out! GTO enters my list of favourite anime and whatever Perfect Collection you are deciding upon, I recommend the series without hesitation.
