The video and audio were good the subtitles were pretty good with occasional typos and poor word choices. The anime style was not as stylish as the movie. I saw the movie and thought this was the best martial arts movie since the movie bloodsport. I was so excited when I got the TV series that I took the day off work (a true otaku). The first problem I had was who was this main character, he did not look like Baki. I stopped the DVD made sure it said Grappler Baki and continued watching. Some of the character development was a little lacking, and some of the characters that I wanted to know more about in the movie where missing, but I watched the entire DVD from beginning to end. The only other problem I had was that I wanted to watch more episodes when I finished the last episode. If you have liked the movie then this DVD is for you. The TV series starts way before the movie takes place and has a number of episodes after the movie.

My thought on Grappler Baki by MI. Audio: Audio was excellent. No fuzzy sounds or anything at all. Video: Looked like a direct rip from dvd. Excellent. Subtitles: Understandable. Sometimes you have to say, "huh?" but it's easily understandable. My biggest beef was where they translated endorphine to "brain coffee." I would give it a 3.5-3.9 out of 5.0.

Packaging: Basic but in a new quad-disc case, it's actually nice and convenient. Decent cover art and a typical, somewhat blurred, back. Nothing special but not horrible. Content: Entertaining Show, haven't seen it all so I'll leave it at that for now. Subtitles: Decent. I was expecting complete ass coming from AnimeStudio Original Subs, surprisingly, they aren't horrible. They are often clear and understandable, with decent English (tho not without lots of Engrish), and mostly decent job on the names. The biggest problem appears to be word choice, for example snipe for cigarette and pixy for freshman. You get used to it overtime but you should be warned. The story is for the most part easy to understand and would be even without subs, or at least I think it would be. The only big problem in the subs appears to be in episode 19 where they turn to Chinese only after the commercial break, bummer too, because this is one of the few talkative episodes, but accordingly - you can still easily follow along. Not Berserk, yet not Yu Yu. Video: Nice. 1.77:1 Non-Anamorphic DVD Transfers. They come out very crisp and seem to keep a settle brightness. Episodes 1 - 19 are near perfect with very few, if any glitches - and no screen blips like in most AC/MI releases. Episodes 20 - 24, the quality degrades slightly - it's still well encoded but the picture looks a bit duller. Overall - Nice. Audio: Good 2 ch japanese mix, no problems to speak of. Menus/Chapters: Paly All menus with no music or animation. Chapters are at the beginning of each episode and there is only an op at the beginning of each disc and an ed at the end of each disc. Overall: Entertaining to say the least, will update when I complete the series. Many of these comments are coming from a friend of mine who watched the entire show through the day it came in, showed me everything that seemed to uhm... stand out. Haven't seen the Animation Video set or MI set yet. Also note - there was a lockup on disc 2 on this set, probably just a bad press though so there isn't really anything to worry about.

i have watched 10episodes of this already, video wise this is very nicely done i didnt notice any blockiness during action scenes. i watched this with a nice home theater setup and i heard no humming in the background at all and now to the subtitles... hk original subtitles but not bad at all considering other original subtitles AS have done heh. the subtitle actually is decent and you can follow the story without much problem since its mostly fighting but as with all hk originals there is alot of engrish in it.
