After some initial problems* I watched the series using a Microsoft Xbox, RGB connection and a 36-inch Hitachi flat-widescreen television.
NOTE: I later performed some tests on my own preferred set-up (Pioneer DV636, RGB video-only connection, 28-inch Hitachi flat-widescreen and Sony Dolby ProLogic amp) to balance my overall impressions. I?ll list what I noticed after the Xbox results. I will also give my reasons for the Video score.
Disc 1 contains 4 episodes and with one exception regarding the extras (See: Comment) must mirror the R1 Volume 1 DVD. The show itself had some high production values, which resulted in an excellent R1 DVD judging by this rip. Animation is smooth and crisp. Colours are gorgeous ? rich and vibrant ? particularly on the characters, but there are also numerous still life scenes, e.g. sunsets, that also look really nice. Even on an Xbox. Naturally, it looks stunning on a better set-up since there is the added bonus of pin-sharp clarity.
Disc 2, as you might have guessed, contains the remaining episodes: all nine of them (I believe Episode 13 is in fact an OVA ? the art is different and it?s a lot more raunchy). Colours are still nice, but all the episodes (with the exception of two for some reason) have some very noticeable video problems (REMEMBER: I?m watching on an Xbox). Basically whenever there is animation there is the appearance of shimmering horizontal lines. I?m not sure of the technical term (aliasing?), but it looks like the characters/objects are about to teleport Star Trek-style whenever they move. In Episode 12, I also noticed there was heavy pixelisation/macro-blocking on a character when the ?camera? simply panned across her body.
At one point in Disc 2 (Episode 9 or 10) the screen froze and the Xbox crashed ? DVD controls would not work. After ejecting and starting again, that particular scene played through with no problems.
On my Pioneer there is no ?teleportation? effects as on the Xbox, but rather pixelisation during movement. I guess if you sat way back from the TV you might not notice it, but it?s there.
One thing I did notice ? perhaps due to my Pioneer having ?Scan? rather than proper fwd/rwd controls ? the picture would sometimes get ?blocky? during a forward search. Things would return to normal during playback. This did not happen on the Xbox, which, annoyingly, has better fwd/rwd controls.
If I only had an Xbox to watch this series on I don?t think it would score higher than 3 (even though Disc 1 is great), but watching on a decent DVD player I don?t think the experience would have been as bad. Testing on a DVD-ROM, there were no problems such as the Xbox experienced, but I find it hard to make any firm conclusions watching on my monitor. Your judgement of the video quality will depend entirely on your DVD playback facilities. I?m giving it the benefit of the doubt as well as an extra ½ mark.
*I was going to watch this on a multi-region Toshiba SD 2100 standalone player. However, on loading, the title menu was ?blocky?; the setup menu took around six attempts to load; and playback was also blocky. After ejecting and starting again, the disc would not even load. I had no such problems on the Xbox, Pioneer or DVD-ROM.
Audio:
I listened to the Japanese track, which was clear and without any distortion. If you have a Dolby 2.0 set-up, dialogue is focused on the centre speaker. There are a number of effects played through the rear speakers, e.g. the spaceship in the Episode 1 Prologue.
I spot-checked the English track and from what I heard it seemed just as clear as the Japanese. However, as I said, I did not watch the series in English.
On a personal note, I thought the music throughout the series was really nice.

Comment:
Packaging is as shown in the Synopsis picture ? the FX logo is clearly marked on the back and a frosted plastic slipcase is supplied. There is artwork underneath each plastic discholder, which is repeated on the discs.
Menus are, I assume, ripped from the R1 set and are clear and easy to navigate. (See screenshots 1, 2 and 3)
Scene Select menu is also easy to navigate and presented with small, animated ?scenes? of each chapter. Episodes are divided in to Prologue/Opening/Part A/Part B/Closing/Preview. (See screenshot 4)
As noted in the Video section there is a discrepancy in the Extras section. Basically, you don?t get all the extras as featured in the R1. You get two short promos on Disc 1 and a textless opening on Disc 2. This means that the music videos and the design galleries, which are supposed to be really nice, are not included.
Final comment: Video is going to be the determining factor with this set. I feel that everything else - audio and subs - is up to scratch rip-wise although the extras that were included were nothing to shout about.
Series comment: Despite the premise ? alien teacher turns up and school and marries student ? Onegai Teacher isn?t all out comedy. There are comic moments and one or two ecchi gags, but it?s primarily about relationships. Despite thinking that the early episodes were a bit light, several of the later episodes are really well done and are quite touching. Episode 13 is not really part of the storyline and operates a bit like Love Hina 25 and the last episode El Hazard Alternative World in that it?s an excuse for things to hot up a little!
I?m not going to give Onegai Teacher a ?must have? recommendation, but it?s a nice little series and there is a second helping on the way.
