newly discovered: on disc 4, each of episode 23 and 24 has repeated itself once. Too bad, it's not only confusing to the viewers , but also distracting. EDIT: Sorry , I stand corrected. Episodes 23 and 24 do not have duplicated ones on the same disc, after all. After double-checking, the "duplicated" episodes are, in fact, the director's cut version of 23 & 24 episodes. In other words, the two director's cut versions are thrown in for good measure. Really good value for the money. Bravo!

This is the best Eva has ever looked. The colours, tones, and enhanced details of this remastered transfer makes the R1 releases look like VHS. Outstanding in every way!
Audio:
The sound has also been remastered to a full digital 5.1 track and it sounds awesome. The action sequences erupt all around the room, completely immersing you in the experience. Equally outstanding!!

Unfortunately, this is where the set fails somewhat. MI has used exactly the same scripts for this re-release as in their first Eva TV set. For those who aren't already familiar with it, the subs for episodes 1-20 and 25-26 are average. While they do make it possible to understand what's going on, the grammar is often poor and many of the finer points of the story are completely lost. Subs for episodes 21-24 (the director's cut episodes) are worse since they seem to have been translated from italian scripts and are very poorly done. Unless you're already familiar with Eva, I think you'd have a hard time understanding everything that's happening, and at such a critical point in the story, this could seriously spoil things.
Comment:
Make no mistake, this is the definitive japanese Eva. Video and audio are jaw-dropping and both director's cut and original episodes 21-24 are included. Only the subs disappoint, and having average subs in a show like Evangelion can really detract from the experience. But if you already know the show inside-out, can understand japanese, or have any intention of learning the language some day, then you should definitely get this set since once you see and hear it this way, you'll never go back to those ugly R1s.
