It\'s the year 2356. 189 years ago an explosion outside the solar system caused a gigantic shockwave that hit the earth. But mankind survived, only to find out that a second shockwave, far more dangerous than the first, will hit the earth in 189 years. So the now united mankind set out for space and built mighty space stations, the Foundations. And a few month before the second impact, our heroine, Katase Shima, enters the space academy on Stellvia, one of those Foundations. Will she be able to play her part in the \"Great Mission\", the attempt to save the earth from the impact of the second shockwave?
