Reviews for Kanon Complete Collection
Video:
Audio:
Subtitles:

Overall:

Video:

R2 rip -- picture is generally very clear. First Disk (episodes 1 to 9): When I watched this on my computer's DVD drive, I noticed no pixellation, but when I watched the DVD on my regular 21" TV, there was some mild pixellation in scenes involving fast motion. Second Disk (episodes 10 to 13): No image defects whatsoever. By the way, don't let the German cover fool you -- the "R2" is Japanese NTSC, not European PAL (most of Europe is also R2 territory, but with PAL color).

Audio:

Both Disks: 2.1 stereo with no problems detected.

Subtitle:

Disk One: Subs very understandable, but on the Engrishy side, with some misspellings, stilted grammar and some missused punctuation (such as a "." when the charcater meant "!"). The names for the most part are correct, but the subtitlers, for some unknown reason, use "Aizawa" every time soneone says "Yuuichi", and "Yuuichi" when someone says "Aizawa". And on the second episode, there's one instance of Chinese characters used instead of English in part of one line of subtitle. Also, some of the subs are on the fast side. Other than these, all subs are there and timed correctly. The opening and closing songs are also subbed, as are the previews. Disk Two: Same qualities above. The good news, though, is that "Yuuichi" and "Aizawa" are right where they belong. The bad news is that there are timing issues -- episode 10 was one line behind from about 4 minutes into the first half to about halfway into the second half; epiasode 12 has a line behind for about a minute in the middle of the first half. The opening and closing songs were subbed, except for the final episode, whose ending wasn't subbed. Also unsubbed was the TV commercial "special". And once again, don't let the German cover fool you -- there are no German dubs or subs on this set (I'll explain this in the "comments" below).

Comment:

Packaging: Front has Aiyu sitting in a tree, as feathers float around her. Back has Aiyu, Nayuki and Shiori in three different pictures. Oddly, this DVD set has a German name, "Die Fernsehserie Kanon (Zeichentrickfilm)" ["Kanon, the TV Series (animated)"]; however, Kanon was never released in Germany or Europe, nor did it have a German dub or subtitles made -- Japanese anime producers generally use non-Japanese words and phrases in their titles (mainly English). Chapters: Would you believe five per episode? Intro, Opening Credits, First Half, Second Half, Closing Credits / Preview. Menu: All items are in English, with feathers floating in the background and part of the opening theme played. The chapter section also has descriptive details on what to expect in that part of the episode. However, you need to use the arrows to navigate to other episodes, as there is no centralised menu for the episodes. Each menu for each episode includes selections for intro, opening, closing, chapters and subtitles. Also, other than the feathers, the menus are bereft of any other pictures, which makes the menus look too plain. Bonuses: Includes a "special" on the second disk, which is nothing except TV commercials for the show. Story: See my description on the main page of this entry. This is a very cute story with romantic and supernatural elements. Nothing that would knock the socks off of you, as it contains nothing of action or the unusual, but definitely worth the look.
