Video was for the most part, very good. Sometimes it became a little fuzzy, although this is most definetly a R1 dvd rip, not vhs. I recently purchased the R1 box set and I can say that this IS an R1 rip, the video on the R1 discs isn't very good to begin with.
Audio:
Maybe it's just my setup but I didn't notice any hum like the other reviewers did. No distortion to speak of either. What I can't understand as this in an R1 rip, why they left out the english dub soundtrack.

Comment:
Overall, I really enjoyed this. Kinda like Tenchi Muyo meets Dual, a little Record of The Lodoss War thrown in, and some Escaflone for good measure. Oh, and let's not forget some Love Hina for seasoning. Very entertaining.

looks kinda grainy, possibly ripped from VHS? Slight pixelation here and there, but nothing serious apart from two episodes where the image got distorted and all messed up for a few seconds.
Audio:
There's an audible humming, especially of course in quieter scenes, which is rather annoying. Please note that this DVD set has NO ENGLISH audio track (even if the packaging says so and even if the credits for the english synchronization are sometimes shown after an episode - there's nothing wrong with your DVD player, believe me)

Comment:
Ranma meets Escaflowne, sort of. There's a fantasy kingdom, mecha and girls that turn into guys at night. Oh, well... Unfortunately, this series isn't as funny as the former and not as captivating as the latter, but in the end I guess I have it enjoyed more than I had expected. This DVD set is definitely a good buy - if you can get it at a good price, that is.

Good. A little blocky at times, but not bad.
Audio:
4 - there's a hum in the background, but if you don't pay attention to it, it's not that bad. Other then that, it's great.

Comment:
Video 4/5 - Smooth most of the time, and nice quality, but every now and then will get blocky. Better then most hk sets that I've seen, though, and definately watchable. Audio 4/5 - Fuzzy noise in the background. Not that noticable unless the volume is turned up to a high volume, and even then is just a background noise, not really noticable even then unless you pay attention to it. The volume in the set is not loud, so I suggest you turn up the volume before watching. Subtitles 4.5/5 - The American rips. The only complaint is that every now and then, about 1-2 times max in the episode, the subtitle will not show up. Also, mistimed at some points, but within 2 sentences of the show. Over all this set it great. It is the American rip of the set, but the quality went down slightly when Anime Studio made the set. If you like mechs, fantasy, and comedy, this is worth the money to get.

If you like kawai-comedy-fantasy, like Slayers, this is a MUST HAVE for you. While technicaly not top, there is nothing really annoying, which kills you the fun.

Comment:
Maze? Talk about a wild ride. Here we have an anime where it is a great muti-layered world. That seems to take from a piece of what?s best from other anime and puts it together in one very enjoyable story. First let?s look at the characters Starting with the main role Maze are hero (but I thought she was a girl) has some issues that only Ranma could ever hope to help her/him deal with. Her problem being she changes from a girl to a boy (not when splashed with water) when nighttime comes around. Here?s where the first start taking good ideas but boy do they take a lot. Next you got Mill-chan she is your average over bearing / annoying princess that never grows with the show. Next you have the duo of Solude & Aster your basic fighters that for the early part are great but near the middle seem to lose a lot of screen time. But for note sake Solude sounds and looks like Ryoko (Tenchi Muyo) I even believe the same actor voices them. Someone please correct me if I?m wrong. And then there is Saris Rapier she is a surprise in that she turns out to be one of the best characters and the do a great job telling her story. Last we have Randy who is best describe as the sole person who knows anything and moves the plot forward. Audio ? man talk about a direct rip it is down to the bare bone of the R-1 we are just missing the English Dub. Which just for those who care isn?t done as well as I had hoped for. Other than that sounds great give it 4.5 Video ? As stated above seems to be a direct rip gotta love it when the video and the audio match. One slight complaint is that it at first looks very grainy, but come in the later episodes it just seem to be a animator?s hand and not the DVD?s fault. Again 4.5 Subtitles ? Ah the stuff that usually falls to the wayside. As stated it seems to be an R-1 rip so the Subtitles seem to be in good order. No real worries and no big improvements. Just your standard white lettering. Give 4. Rap up ? This a great series that stays with the comedy side all the way to the end. Lot?s of laughs and steals the hearts of those who can over look the princess of whines a lot (Mill-chan). It may not be come one of your top 5 animes, but it will pass the time in between shipments of Hellsing DVD?s. As a standard I will try to pitch the show in one sentence Dubbed the ?One shot? One Shot ? Maze take Ranma throw her into a Record of Lodoss setting, turn shampoo into a 12 year old princess, a kick ass Mech, and Fireball magic galore and you got the anime Maze. Final Verdict Buy it.

Video:
Video 4.5- Hmmm?it?s okay, I guess? Fast scenes suffer from break-up and there are a couple of rainbows, especially with the second ending. The Video also looks a bit grainy. I?m sure most of these problems are also on the region one (well, except for the video break-ups) so I?ll give it a 4.5. NOTE:: Compared episode one on the Anime Studio set to episode one on the Region one OVA disk and the grain was there as well ::END NOTE
Audio:
Audio 3.5- ?Huuummmmmmmmmmm? This release has that damn humming everyone hates so much. You get used to it, but during silent scenes it?s really noticeable. Also, if you?re using a receiver to watch this, turn down the bass, it makes the humming worse.

So, pretty much the same fonts you see on most region one releases, but white. This font is great for this series, however, since most of the bottom half of the screen has a yellow or dark brown tint. Sometimes the subtitles won?t show up for a couple lines. It?s nothing major? just a minor annoyance. Also, some episodes have mistimed subs. Menus 4.5- You probably won?t spend much time here since there is not much to do. Chapter selections are very difficult to make but that?s due to CPM/Software Sculptors stupidity in making chapter stops. Oh, in the menu for Disk 2 it says it?s disk ?A?. This is a typo? So don?t worry, you don?t have two disks of disk one. ^_^ Packaging 5.0- I loved all the cover art from this set. Even the plastic box looks great! I just wish Anime Studio would start to use normal sized DVD cases?Oh well. Overall ? If you don?t mind the ?hum? and slightly mistimed subtitles, buy this set now!! ^_^ edited by rvg99 on 19 Mar 2002 12:36 am
