This is a wonderfully rendered story about a young girl\'s struggle to find herself and to face the real world she finds herself in.
Haru, the main character, is a young high school student who is going through the tough times that most people that age go through. However, her life was about to change completely when she walked home with her friend from school one day.. Upon seeing a strange cat get in trouble, Haru bravely saves it from being hit by a car and much to her amazement, the cat stands up and brushes himself off and thanks her deeply for saving him. This is only the beginning.
Overnight, she is paid a visit by the King of Cats and they promise to give her gifts in return for saving the King\'s son (the cat aforementioned). The next day, she finds her front lawn filled with cattails and the neighborhood cats chase after her (because she smells of catnip). At school more strange things happen until she finds out she is meant to be married to the prince! A soft voice bids Haru to find help at the Cat Business Office.
Making her way there following Muta, a large white cat, she meets Toto (crow gargoyle) and Baron (cat statue). They agree to help her, but before they can form a plan, the Kingdom Cats arrive and steal her away! She is taken to the Kingdom of Cats along with Muta. A young cat named Yuki bids Haru to leave at once, but Haru hesitates and ends up going to the palace to meet the king. Muta appears to drown in a huge vat of catnip jelly (ugh) and Haru is horrified and deeply upset. She has also turned into a cat herself!
At the reception, she sobs quietly, greiving over Muta while the King tries to please her with all sorts of crazy entertainment acts. Finally, Baron shows up and offers to dance with Haru. They dance until the King stops them and demands to know who Baron is. He reveals himself and the King calls in the guards to seize them. Baron frees Muta (who is not dead) and they run from the guards toward the great tower, where there is a portal back to the human world for Haru to return through.
They eventually get to the top, but the King flattens the tower, cutting off their escape. The prince arrives and demands to know what is going on! Haru realizes that she helped Yuki out much earlier and that the prince and Yuki are to be married. The King then offers for Haru to marry him instead, and of course she rejects this. Muta then reveals that he is a great and notorious criminal, and once again they run for the very top of the tower, which is still connected to the human world. Haru makes it to the top, but the portal opens to a different point, thousands of feet above the Earth! She falls along with Muta and Baron, but is saved by Toto and his friends.
In the end, she grows up inside and becomes her own person, strong of will and steady of heart. The end.
