Overall:

Video:

Alright overall, except for some slight ghosting here and there.

Audio:

There's a rather loud humming in the background. If you listen closely, you can even hear it in louder scenes. Apart from that, the audio sounded okay to me on my simple stereo setup.

Subtitle:

This series is very dependant on dialogues, and unfortunately - as with most releases from Anime Studio - the quality of the subtitles is rather disappointing. That is, 'perfectly Engrish': lots of syntax and translation errors, typos and - most annoying - messed up names throughout the series. (Ginto = Lin, Laphir = Ravel etc.) At least these names don't change between episodes. And there are no mistimings, which would have been desastrous respecting the sheer amount of dialogue. The subs are understandable for like 95% of the time. However, I got the feeling that I missed quite a bit of the finer parts, if you know what I mean.

Comment:

This two-disc-set contains 13 episodes, that is the first season of "Sekai no Senki." The episodes are evenly divided (first disc - 7 episodes, second disc - 6 episodes). The menus are alright and each episode is divided into two parts. The episodes do not seem to be divided where the commercial break took place - Anime Studio just cut them in the middle for whatever reasons. The DVD box is your generic-double-DVD-plastic-box-thingy. It only annoys me that they couldn't keep the artwork consistent. If you put this box next to the box of the second season, they look like two altogether different series. As for the series itself: this is still one of the finest epic scifi-anime out there. If you do not like the whacky space stuff like Nadesico or such and prefer a series which takes itself more serious, "Seikai no Senki" is for you. However, you should watch "Seikai no Monshou" (aka Crest of the Stars) first to understand what's going on. Apart from its several flaws, I still recommend this set, for the series itself is great and there just isn't any alternative set (yet? one of those 'perfect editions' would do good here...)
