Video:
This is as good as it gets. Widescreen picture, vibrant colors, and nary an artifact or spot of picture breakup in sight. It's a good thing too, because during the space battles there's a lot of explosions and lasers fying hither and to. Perfect score, and well deserved.
Audio:
Japanese 2.0 and English 2.0 tracks, both flawlessly done. No desynching or other audio funny stuff.

Comment:
Packaging:
The packaging is pretty basic, you have a book-style two disc gatefold with some nice looking art that matches the discs. There's an episode listing on the back of the gatefold.
Menus:
Very nice menus, quick to load, and quite stylish. Very pleasant.
Extras:
Clicking on the Extras menu on each disc will play a small featurette on the show. Unfortunately, it's not subtitled so I have no idea what it's about. Still, it's there which I guess is nice.
Series comments:
I have to admit, at first i wasn't enthralled by this series. It started off on a path which just screamed to me "Beware! Hackneyed guys-falling-into-boobs jokes ahead!" However, after the first few shakey episodes, it began to take off and stop trying to be Love Hina in space. I found myself really enjoying this series before too long, and I'd highly recommend it to those who can't get enough of "boy being chased by clueless girl while everything that moves in space explodes" type stories.
Note: This is the first half of the entire Vandread series, and its conclusion isn't really a conclusion at all, but a segue into the second half. If you pick this one up, I'd highly recommend you go ahead and pick up Vandread: second stage as well, as you'll certainly want to know how this series comes to completion. There's a few twists that I'm sure even the most experienced anime watcher won't expect :p
