Reviews for Ayashi No Ceres

Watched it on my old lo-res TV, with my old stand-alone DVD player, so I couldn't notice any problems other than the screen becoming a little jittering on high-action scenes. I would assume the video was a VHS rip, so "Average."

Audio:

Again, this is on my old TV. It sounded pretty good, but I didn't have the sound system to tell you what this would sound like on anything better than a TV set's mono output.

This is the one factor that made me almost never want to buy bootlegs again. Don't even BOTHER trying to watch the first episode on the English sub settings, as it's nearly 5 minutes behind what's actually being spoken on-screen. After that, you only get Engrish, Engrish ... oh, and more Engrish. I think the only way I actually understood as well as I did what was going on is that I was already familiar with the plot and dialogue from reading translations of the manga. ALL character names have been changed, but at least they're consistent. You get some characters with English names that have no resemblance to their original names (Aya is "Little Fairy," Ceres' mana is now called "The Love," The Mikage are now "Royal Shadow Family"), characters with Chinese names (Aki is "Ah Ming," Kagami is something like "Kwok-Sun," and those are the only ones that haven't slipped my mind...), and, the oddest of the batch, characters whose names appear in the subtitles as the literal translation of their original names written in kana (Tooya is "Ten Nights," and Chidori is "Thousand Bird." The only other time I've seen this done on a bootleg is with MI's Zeta Gundam, where Char's Hyaku-Shiki is occassionally subbed as "Type 100.") The only reason I'm giving it a two is that these subs aren't the absolutely WORST I've seen (and that's coming up...)

Comment:

This has been my very first HKDVD review. :D Like I said, this set nearly convinced me never to buy bootlegs again, as this was my first set. I bought this a couple years ago along with the bootleg boxed set of VanDread Stage 1 .. but I like to pretend I never actually owned those DVDs. :) All options screens are entirely in Chinese, so I had to do some trial and error to get the set-up right. Extras are credit-less versions of the normal OP and the OP for the final episode (which is the LEAST the bootleg group could have done, as almost all the OPs/EDs are snipped off of the actual episodes), found on the last disc after the last episode. Last, but foremost, buy the FX set.

Video: 3/5 Well it's ok, but not very good. Audio: 3/5 Also not a great sound. Subs: 1/5 What shall I say...worse? I don't think this word describes the bad quality of the subtitles. Engrish...engrish...engrish. Nearly all the names are wrong and there isn't one sentence that is grammatically right. This set has also just one opening and one ending on each DVD. LEAVE YOUR FINGERS FROM THIS BOX - BUY THE FX-BOX!!!

Nothing unusual. Everything is pretty much as expected. The graphics are very similar to Fushigi Yuugi.

Audio:

Normal. Fairly good seiyuu.

I want to die!!!!! they make me truely sick. Holy crap I'm going to buy a different release I am so desperate. I was only able to watch the first half of the series and then my eyes physically escaped my body to prevent further injuries. It has very very poor grammar and takes certain sayings too literally. Very literal translations. The names are also translated to English (aya=fairy). The subtitles do not fit in the screen and often run over to where you can not see them. They flash on very quickly and are often hard to read.

Comment:

I would strongly recommend that you buy another release. The subtitles are just too horrible to read and ruin the series.eileen from dvdsubs.com

I just don't like the animation style in this anime. I guess it's because of the hand-drawn background thingy that people were talking about. For me, I prefer computer graphics. It always look so much better. Well anyways, the video quality is just not good. It looked aged for some reason. I also had to turn the color down.

Audio:

Volume is low again. The music could hardly be heard which makes this anime kinda boring.

Subtitle:

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE subs. Oh my god. The subs ran off the screen like every two seconds. The very stupid Chinese names are there. They also were really fast. It was sooo annoying. I knew it was bad but I can't believe it was THAT bad.

Comment:

I got this set a week before the FX perfect set come out. I feel like crap. I actually only watched the first disk. I'm gonna wait for the FX set and finish the rest. Sigh.

The story was okay, not a lot of action but a lot of romance. Well, this is a shoujo anime so...I liked it and I think there's more to it. It's just I can't go on watching this set because it totally ruins the story.

This is one of worst HK sets out there. The subs are positively horrid and they even leave entire lines out. Stay away from this at all costs. Do not waste your money on this one.

As everyone has already stated - the subs suck the nig one! The action and the overall plot were great. The video was dark at times, but not horriffic. I'd watch anything by Yu Watase and was sooo dissapointed when i got this set and found the subs all butchered. I still don't understand why Hk ppl don't utilize the resources out there (ie. fansubs etc.) to help guide them when doing their subbing. It can't be all that difficult to put together some half way decent subs, can it?? I'd stay away from this set unless you are a die hard Yu Watase fan and just *have* to have it.

I saw this at a comic-con one time and from what little I saw, I knew that this was the set to pass. I've never seen so many pixels onscreen in my life -- it was like playing Kid Icarus all over again. The subtitles, of course, are grotesque -- when they're even there, at least. Most of what's said doesn't even get subbed, as if it was the translation crew was too busy freebasing cocaine to bother. But don't worry. This show sucked anyway.

God awful subs. It seems like every line in this butchers the original. Video is pretty lacking as well with the show turning to a mess of pixels pretty easy and alot of ghosting. Biggest problem is there quite a few missing subs in this set as well. In several instances important plot points are totally lost because of this. The last three to two minutes of the first episode has no subs and that right there kills off a major part of the plot.
