Reviews for Ranma ½ TV Complete Collection

Video:

The video was not bad, but it was not good either. I definitely would not say the color was vibrant or that the detail of some of the scenes was represented as clearly as it could have been. One of the worst aspects of the video thus far, and I have watched up to the ~8 disc, is that every so often the edits in the video get messed up. More accurately, the company cut out the opening and endings of every episode that is in the middle of the disc. Of course this is common practice in HK dvds, but they did so with one fatal flaw. When they pieced together some of these edited videos, they actually cut it too short or overlapped the cuts too much. This means that every so often, you'll be watching an episode and it will almost be over when suddenly it just ends and the next episode begins. It has happened twice so far as I have been watching.

Audio:

The audio is fine. There is no real bad hissing or anything. I can turn the volume up pretty loud, and I don't hear any distortion. I guess this means they must have taken the audio filtered it and converted it into digital audio, because this is definitely not a dvd rip by the looks of the video. In my version, there was only japanese audio so not much to say about any problems switching between the audio.

Subtitle:

The subtitling is not bad at all. I have seen quite a few HK dvds and this one is among one of the best. I won't say that it is as good as the english dvds, but it is not crap like a lot of HK dvds. I mean at least it makes sense. The one thing I found irritating is that at times there were no subtitles for a while even though the dialogue was clearly still going. And then a conversation between, say, Ranma and Akane that lasted for a good three or four minutes would be summed up in two exchanges, like "Ranma, I'm mad at you!!!", "You're so uncute!!!" and that would be it which was an obvious abridged version of an otherwise much more longwinded discussion. There was one other thing that bothered me. I know a little japanese, so I have some idea of a few of the phrases. In the series sometimes somone would say something and the translation would be slightly off. For example, they might say something that is not so severe like baka, and it would be translated to something much more severe like M***** F*****. But then again that happens a lot in other HK dvds too.

Comment:

All in all if you can get this collection at a good price, then it is worth it. I was just interested in watching the series because I wanted to see this anime classic. This means I wanted it for cheap to watch and that's it. If you're interested in getting it to add to your collection because you like Ranma and want it to keep and display then this is probably not the collection for you. If little problems in video or editing bother you to the point of not wanting to watch a dvd then this is also not for you. If you are also looking for a good collecction for source footage for music videos than do not get this. This collection seems to come in two different boxes. One looks like the picture on the summary page and their is another box. Additionally my personal collection has a slightly different cover background and the company is not AM but just A.

All the discs are DVD5s so the video is a litle bit better then a VCD. Nothing real amazing.

Audio:

The audio is just plain japanese and it is as clear as you can get.

Subtitle:

The subs are great but there is e-mail addresses every 10 mins which makes them damn annoying.

Comment:

If you really don't care about english audio this is the set for you. However most of the jokes are harder to get.
