Comment:
Welp, here goes. Tokyo Babylon is the prequel to a series most of you know of entitled X. It's an excellent little 2 episode OVA with some really nice animation (Especially considering the age) and some really entertaining short stories. The first is about a man killing through fear, the second is about a woman who is post-cognative and can sense the tragedies that happend in a surrounding area by touch alone.
Video - No problems here. There are no video blips (a la Manga International), there are no Logos, there are no E-mail addresses. Directly ripped from the R1, and considering the sheer age of the show, it looks outstanding. There are a few things you could nit pick about, but really - it's dead on, both the creators of the R1 and AS deserve to be commended on this (R1 for getting it mastered right and AS for not f@#king up the 're-mastering' process.
Audio - This includes the Japanese and English dubs. The English dub plays through without a hitch, no desyncing, no snaps, crackles, pops, skips, anything. The Japanese audio track does offer one problem near the beginning of episode two. Early on, there were some noticeable pops and minor (millisecond) skips. It's not a big deal but it is noticeable and worth mentioning. Not bad by any means. That and this may of just been my disc, but oddly - I don't think so.
Subtitles - Pretty good. It appears they retyped or OCR Bridged these subtitles from the original vob streams. They have occasional spelling errors because of this but - that being said - occasional means like two throughout the entire thing, hell they could have been from the original R1. The issue on here though, is the timing. There are many times where the subs just flash on the screen entirely way too quickly. There were quite a few situations where I had to go rewind, play, and pause to catch what was being said. So how can I say they're pretty good? despite the timing snafus, it's still in good english, and it's easy to overlook something minor like this. It does help that the show is only 2 episodes and that it's incredibly engrossing, however.
Overall - Highly recommended disc/show. If you're in the market for it and can't find the R1 for a good price, then go for it - the faults are minor and not distracting at all. The plots of both episodes are very cool, despite a slightly yaoi edge to the main character (he looks like boy george), luckily this is never explored - even in the least. (And there is enough female fanservice from his sister to make up for it.)
