Overall:
Video:
This video has some very low quality video. Looks like it was ripped from an old LD, with a very grainy source. I noticed that there were LOTS of Film grains and scratches, as if the film itself hadn't been restored or anything. The video encoding itself was decent enough, there wasn't a whole lot of macroblocking, but edges were a little comperssed, and the video on a whole was really soft (looked like a VHS rip, only a little higher res, not as soft and no VHS distortion on the bottom). The R1s look a lot nicer and way more vibrant.
Audio:
The primary Japanese audio was fairly clear, however it was a little too loud, some times the screams (especially when Goku is yelling or shooting a KameHameHa) it sounds a bit distorted. I listened a little bit to the Chinese tracks in order to see how they sound. They are decent, well equalized, and a lot better than the Japanese track. Update: ARGH! The whole movie looks like it has ghosting going on. Really obnoxious. You can tell in the Screen shots I'm making.
Subtitle:
The subs were pretty obnoxious. First they had Chinese Names. For some reason Gohan is Wufan in Chinese... On top of the different names, they didn't have very good grammer, and the sentences were really literal, and really backwards. Or in other words, Engrish 101. Not very fun at all.
Comment:
I originally bought this DVD because I was told it was Movie 8 (from the Chinese Title). Unfortunately, it is NOT movie 8, but Rather Movie 1. The packaging however is VERY pretty. In fact I like this packaging way more than the original Pioneer release. However, the problem is that the set isn't very good. Avoid this title totally.
