14-year old street fighting Yusuke Urameshi, a no good punk who has seemed to have given up on life has just cut class and runs into a little kid. After telling the child not to play in the street he walks off and looks back and sees the same rotten kid chasing his ball into the middle of the road. Yusuke runs and pushes him out of the way of an upcoming truck but gets killed himself. After that he is in a constant state of astro-projection. He meets up with a girl named Botan who explains to him that according to "the records" he was not suppose to save that child and that somehow miraculously the child would still survive, leaving him somewhere in between heaven and hell. Enraged by the fact that he died for no reason young Yusuke tries to tell himself that it is not happening, since he can see his body just no one else can. But at long last he agrees to Botans demands and travels with her to the Spirit World. Impressed by Yusuke's incredible fighting abilities Ko-enma the son of the lord of the Spirit World makes this juvenile delinquent a Spirit Detective. Meeting up with old rivals and sore enemies Yusuke soon has a small crew of strange companions. After great toil and anguish he and his group enter a demon martial arts tournament and are forced to deal with an ex-spirit detective like himself trying to open the gateway between the Human World and The Demon World.<br />
