One of the coolest series ive seen in a long while.... this set is over all pretty good, slighty let down by the subs but even they are understandable....

Detective Conan has yet to have it's first series on DVD, so these obviously came from the laserdiscs. The transfer is wonderful! All the lines were solid and dead on! The colors were generally perfect, and very few times did the video look a little dull. I was very impressed with this video, I expected much less, considering the amounts of episodes per DVD. But this rivals R1 quality.
Audio:
It was clear and nice, but nothing exteremly special.

Boxart: A- This had a nice picture of Shinichi pointing at you with a smirk on his face. In the background, the famous Detective Conan bricks pattern behind him. It says Detective Conan TV series at the top. The pictures inside are nice, good pictures of kid Conan here. What I thought was wierd was that from the very first slot for a DVD matched the picture on DVD #3, and the last slot matched DVD #1's picture. So I put them in reverse, so it says DVD 3, 2, 1 from right to left. Just something. Content: A+ This was an awesome awesome TV series. The murder mysteries were well thought up, developed, and complex. Everything is a great mystery, which is what everyone loves. This was awesome! Other: I so badly wanted the Animation Video version of this set. I have full faith in them that it would've been better, but I couldn't. So here this is! The MI website and emails appeared over the video for maybe 10 seconds every other episode or so, and the MI logo appeared on top corners quite frequently, which also annoyed me. I hate the bloated Manga International. They really don't care about the quality of their work nearly as much as any one else. Try to get A.V. but this will do good if you can't. This series is completly worth it! I wouldn't hesitate to buy Series 2 at all.

The previous review is exactly how I feel. The subs, audio,& video were great. The only real flaw in the subs was not subing the followup ending (similar to what they do on FRIENDS) and also the NEXT CONAN HINT (Which gives you a clue to help you solve the mystery). What I love about detective Conan is that the problem solving cases are so unique and almost impossible to figure out (In contrast...I figured out sixth sense 10 minutes into the movie). The art is not sophisticated, the storyline carries the entire show. I personally believe that this anime would be good even if the action was with stick figures (It is literally that good).

Video - 4/5 This was either a very very good VHS rip or an LD rip. It looked very nice. To give you an example, it looked a little better than the video quality on the 3 Kenshin Tv (MI) sets. People had different opinions about the Kenshin Tv sets' video quality. Some people thought it was fine and others were unhappy with it. So if you liked the Kenshin Tv sets' video quality then you'll definitely like this but if you didn't, then you might be disappointed. All OP, ED and Previews were intact but they were not subbed. Watermarks would appear in every other episode once for ten seconds. The (MI) website and e-mail addresses would appear on screen (not within the subs) for 15 seconds at the beginning of every other episode. Not in the same episode with a watermark though. One ep would have a watermark and then the next would have the addresses and so on. Audio - 4/5 Sounded fine all the way through. No trouble. Subs - 4/5 Almost Perfect HK Originals. The quality of the subs on this set deserved a better grade such as a 4.5-4.9/5 but I had to give it a 4/5 because of a few "small problems" and one "not so small" problem which I'll get to later. First the good stuff. The translation was excellent. MI's professional subber must have surely worked on this one. It was superb. Very good grammar and punctuation. The timing was perfect 98% of the time. You will have absolutely no trouble understanding what's going on at all times. It will always be clear WHO the culprit was, WHY he/she committed the crime, and HOW he/she committed the crime. Usually when the subs on (MI) sets are very good like 4/5 or 5/5, there are still usually many typos. Not with this set. I was very surprised. This set includes 27 episodes and there were less than 10 typos throughout the whole set. Very impressive. Throughout the whole 27 eps there were 5 lines or less that were unsubbed. The names were correct 99.9% of the time with major characters and 95% of the time with minor characters. Here's some examples. Shinichi = Shinichi Kudo = Kudou Conan = Conan Edogawa = Edogawa Ran = Ran Mouri = Mouri Kogoro = Kogorou Genta = Genta (He was called Gentai only twice in 1 episode) Mitsuhiko = Mitsuhiko Ayumi = Ayumi Also I checked for episode titles online and all the episode titles were correct. Now for the bad. Timing There were only two timing problems throughout the whole set. First in Episode 1 where the subs were going by too fast. They weren't hyper fast to the point where you had trouble pressing pause in time before they went away. But they were fast enough so that you did have to press pause to give yourself that extra split second you needed to finish the line or either rewind to read the line again because you missed the last word or two. Then towards the end of Episode 16 where Conan is explaining how a murder was committed, the subs were one line ahead of the dialogue for about 4 lines. I normally wouldn't mention something like this but it was annoying because it happened at a very crucial moment. Names Like I said, minor character names were correct 95% of the time. But that's 95% of the time that they were actually written. I still haven't been able to decide whether this is something I prefer or not but it definitely has its ups and downs. Here's what I mean. It seems like the subber was trying very hard to make the subs look as professional as possible. So rather than write a character's name wrong, he just wouldn't write it. So here's some sample sentences to show you what it ends up looking like. If the sentence was supposed to be "My cat Akira is missing." You'd get "My cat is missing." If the sentence was supposed to be "Noriko, why did you kill him?" You'd get "Why did you kill him?" If the sentence was supposed to be "Where is Nakazato now?" You'd get "Where is that guy now?"/"Where is he now?" So the good part about this is that you don't have to be bothered with wrong, Chinese, or misspelled names. But the bad side is that you have to rely on your ears a bit more. You have to actually concentrate on listening as well as reading the subs to catch when someone's name is said. Otherwise you'll get confused. Let's say the subber was not writing the killer's name and then Conan says "I've figured it out!! The killer is Musashi!!" the subs would read "I've figured it out!! The killer is him!!" If you weren't listening to hear the name Musashi, you wouldn't know who the killer was. So its up to you to decide whether this is a good thing or a bad thing but its not such a big deal because it doesn't happen often. It only ocurred in about 6 episodes out of 27 with only 1 or 2 characters per episode. After Episodes Okay now this is what really bothered me. This problem is not so minor in my opinion. At the end of each episode after the ED there is 1-2 more minutes of footage that would show you what ended up happening to the characters in the episode that just finished. Sometimes what happens is not so important but most of the time it is. A lot of the times an episode ends abruptly after the culprit confesses to the crime. The "after episode" part lets you know what happened after that. Like whether the culprit went to jail etc. Sometimes they'll give a backstory on a major/minor character to help you understand things better or to give the story more of a happy ending. MOST OF THESE WERE NOT SUBBED. Out of the 27, about 8-10 were subbed and the rest just left you sitting there wondering what the hell was going on. If not for this problem I would have rated the subs a 4.5/5. There were no extras Overall this set gets a 4.5/5. This was very professionally done and I'm overjoyed with it. Especially because not only was this release handled extremely well but also because this is one of the greatest shows I have ever seen in my entire life. The content is absolutely brilliant. Before getting this HK set I knew nothing about the show and had only been hearing how magnificent it was. I didn't think it could possibly be THAT GOOD but it is and a whole lot more. And plus I'm a total sucker for suspense/mystery. 6/5 for content. If you've been hesitating to get this show/this set, wait no longer. This show is pure gold.
