Comment:
I must say that I really really enjoy tenchi Muyo. And it's take a while for someone to release a quality version of this set. I was a bit disapointed with the As/AV version of the OVA, and was really looking forward to a worthy set without having to shell out $80+ for the R1 pioneer set. This set is really really awesome and it delivers in many ways.
Video 4.8/5
I rated this pretty high because not only does the video quality compare with the best HK DVDs out there, but it also looks about as good as a lot of the R1s out there (and certainly a lot better than most of the manga Corps and Manga Video releases which have tons and tons of glitches, telecine and rainbowing problems). The anime is very pretty with tons of bright and wonderful looking colors, and this DVD brings out the colors with no bleeding or washing out. It may be a direct rip of the Pioneer R1 releases. The reason I didn't score it a perfect 5 was because there still is some macroblocking on a few scenes (the biggest one being in episode 12, but then that scene is made with Tons of jitters, a dark red and lots and lots of lightning, so It's pretty hard to make a scene like that look good at all). The macrolocks don't come out until you get scenes that are as motion intensive and as jittery as scenes like that. All in all the video is very nice looking, and I have no complaints.
Audio 4.9/5
The japanese audio track is very nice sounding. It's crisp and crystal clear, with no break up of any sort. The EQ done on this track was very well done, and uses an entire band making it sound very broad and Full. However, I took points off because of the lack of an English Dub inclusion. I'll be honest that I really like the Tenchi Muyo Dub. I watched the whole series and the first movie Dubbed already, and prefere it more than the japanese track. It's not to say that the japanese track is bad or anything (far from it), but It's all a matter of preference. in most people's cases, it won't make a difference as most people tend to dislike the dubbed versions of anime. however, the japanese track is flawless with no hisses, hums or drop outs that i could tell.
Subtitles 5/5
The subs are perfect. Almost totally likely that they were ripped from the pioneer R1 release. There are no Dubtitles (hearing impared Subs) that were present in the AS/AV set, and they are all perfectly lined up, and coherent.
All in all, this set is a shining example of a great looking DVD. Like I've said before, I did prefer the Dub to the Japanese audio with Subs, and I still hold onto my belief, however I can compromise and take the subtitles version since not only is the video perfect, but the audio is as well. This set excels way past the AS/AV sets because not only is their video kinda ugly, but so is their audio. The audio on the English Dub was out of sync in a lot of episodes, and the japanese audio was very muffled and dull (sounded like 20khz rather than 41.1 or 48). Also the subtitles on the second disc were Dubtitles and they even raced ahead of the audio (so you couldn't even watch the last episode, and had to switch to the English audio). The AS/AV set has a lot of problems, and this set is definately a lot better to get.
