Comment:
1.) Content: 4/5. Short (25 minutes) and (bitter)sweet film. Stylish and wonderfully shot. Great looking CGI and mech battles. A nice story.
2.) Visuals: 4.5/5 DROP DEAD GORGEOUS. And this transfer is perfect too. Amazing looking. Beautiful. Points off for having one watermark of the MI logo and one scene where their contact info is burned onto the picture in green text.
3.) Audio: 5/5 Had no problems with it running on my computer's DVD-ROM and hearing it through the speakers.
4.) Subtitles: 4/5
Due to the use of Chinese names, I think these are HK originals, but they're great. They're slightly better than the Tekkaman Blade and GTO subs, and I've seen worse fansubs. I saw a typo or two and one line lag, but that's it.
5.) Extras: 5/5
Very cool, and all are subbed one way or another.
-Storyboards: watch the entire 25 minute special with synced-audio and optional digital subs in storyboard format
-Four previews for "The Voices of..."
-3 versions of the director's previous special, "She and Her Cat: Their Standing Points" (which is 5 minutes in length).
a. Version 1: Original version with Japanese text (which is also subbed).
b. Version 2: Japanese text and credits changed to English, professional subtitles hard-coded/burned onto the picture.
c. Version 3: Slightly edited version of the special.
-"She and Her Cat" Digest: A preview of the special
-Interview with the Director: 8 minutes. Questions are in the form on onscreen Japanese text (unsubbed), but they subbed his answers. He talks about the making of "The Voices of Distant Star", "She and her Cat", and his philosophies.
Despite the short length of non-extra related content (one 25 minute special and one 5 minute special), I enjoyed the disc. The multitude of extras made it almost like a professional release. If the subs were a hair better and had the original Japanese names, then this would've been practically perfect. Still highly recommended.
