Video:
Macross: DYRL, was one of the most artistically accomplished animes of it's time, coming out in 1984. The tremendous video transfer that FX have done for this title (most probably from the Bandai Emotion R2 DVD release) dramtically underscores that fact. There is pratically no macroblocking, compression artifacts or colour bleeding. Everything from the Mikimoto drawn characters to the graceful, yet epic mecha combat sequences is brought to life with one of the most accomplished video transfers I have ever seen for a HK or R1 DVD disc. This is especially true when the age of the source material is coming on to nineteen years. Hats off to FX, they should be applauded as this is simply a fantastic looking release. Truly, this is DYRL as it should be seen.
Audio:
Even though this release lacks Dobly Digital 5.1 surround sound, the stereo audio track that is present is still wonderfully realised. Mecha and spacecraft whoosh with due aplomb and voices (especially during Minmei's heart warming songs) are crisp, clear and easy to make out. Although one of the least technically impressive aspects of this disc, FX have still managed to a pump out a good audio presentation for this disc.

Comment:
This is easily the best version of Macross: DYRL that money can buy. Why? Well besides the reasons listed above this disc has extras too, such as the original ads for the DYRL movie as well as the teaser trailers also. In comparison to the shabby MI edition it's like comparing DVD to VHS in that the picture quality is so astounding that it mskes what is one of my most cherished anime features of all time a pleasure to watch. If you are like me and you've fallen in love with Macross or you just want to try an epic space opera the likes of which STILL hasn't been matched by the modern anime features of today, then you most certainly cannot go wrong with FX's Perfect Edition of Macross: DYRL. Highly recommended.
