I thought this show was very good. It was kind of like Cowboy Bebop, but not as much as people would have you think. Pretty good.

The video on this set is truly flawless the colors look great, there?s no sign of pixelation even during the action scenes. This set has amazing quality in this area one of the best I've personally seen. Video doesn?t get much better than this for any series.
Audio:
Both language tracks were loud and clear and this is one of the better dubs fantastic.

Comment:
This was my first encounter with FX sets or HKs of any kind a few years back. I ended up paying somewhere between $30 and $35 back than but to this day I still say it was worth every penny. No matter how many times I watch this show I enjoy it truly great. I believe a previous reviewer said it?s like a cheap clone of Cowboy Bebop or something of that sort personally I found this series to be more enjoyable than Bebop. When I initially got this set I couldn?t play the hot springs episode it will not play on a PS2 or an X-Box you need a stand alone player.

Perfect. I've seen the R1's before and the picture is exactly the same. The darkness that other people have mentioned is in the R1's as well, so it's not FX's fault.
Audio:
No problems, standard stereo 2.0 sound. Same for the Japanese track.

Comment:
Menu's were great, taken from the R1's, only modified for the extra eps on the disc. Disc 1 extra's: Textless opening and a character gallery. Disc 2 extra's: Textless ending and various pictures of inside/outside of ships in the show. Disc 3 extra's: Textless ending and a character gallery. The box is a standard 3-fold style, nice and colourful with screenshots from the anime, and large character ones that match the discs. Disc 1 has a picture of Gene with his Caster gun. Disc 2 has a picture of Aisha. Disc 3 has a picture of Melfina. I've seen the series before so it was nice to watch it again with my own dvd's. If you like Cowboy Bebop or Trigun you'll definitely like this series. Basically a mild humor/action type anime. It also has a fairly decent ending, not as ambiguous or unsatisfying as some anime's i've watched. If you're unsure about buying it, don't be, it's definitely worth the money, the quality is no different than original R1's.

For english audio through the disks i noticed that the audio skips for like 1 sec, but it doesnt really affect anything that much, when i really wanted to find out what was jumped I turned on subs, and found that it was alway only 1 or 2 wors that were skipped. For japanese audio it was fairly good all the way through both were 2.0 tracks - no skipping for the japanese... jap audio seems a bit quiet...

nice packaging... like any normal fx thing.. frosted plastic cover. On my set the hot springs episode had like a 30 sec skip slightly before the halfway point, on another standalone dvd player it didnt skip but it became very jumpy after that point however if u started at part 2 from the chapter there was nothing wrong.. and on the pc it was a little glitchy at the point where it skipped on the standalone... but was fine afterwords... maybe its my set?

Great video, when you get to the middle part of each disk it pauses sound and video for 1-2 seconds but that was the only thing i saw that was bad about this set. ENJOY THE UNCUT HOT SPRING EPISODE NOT SHOWN ON TOONAMI, LOL. That episode is very funny and you get a good view of all the girls.

Ill be honest that the video here wasn't as great as everyone has made it out to be. Just like the Cowboy Bebop set, the Video is very pixelated during high motion scenes. For instance, if there is a lot of flashing, or there is a lot of action on the screnn, there will be quite a bit of macroblocking. Besides that the video seems to be pretty good. The source is from the R1 set, so you get some pretty good quality (albeit R1s aren't THAT great all the time), however, there isn't a bunch of artifacting from an overly large amount of episodes per disc (like some sets will have), or too much compression.
Audio:
The Audio is from the R1 source, so you get both the Japanese and The English audio tracks. The Audio sounds pretty good, with a lot of clarity, no hums, pops, hisses etc. However, it seemed like there was a bit of dropout on some of the later episodes. the volume went down a little bit. I'm not sure if it was actually dropout, or what it may have been, but it was there.

I really really enjoyed this set. I thought it was worth my money (all $25) to watch the complete show. The video macroblocking did bother me a bit, but not enough to deter me from watching any more. When watching the set, I did prefer watching in the Japanese Dialogue as opposed to the Dub.edited by kakomu on 06 Dec 2002 1:19 am

This is a great set by FX, containing both the dub and sub. The subtitles are excellent, and the dub is listenable-to. The gatefold is beautiful, typical FX quality, with a matte "frosty" plastic slipcover that gives the set a very professional look. A very highly recommended purchase.

This is obviously an R1 rip as mentioned below so basically everything ranks high in terms of video audio and subs. Not really anything new to say except that I think this series is occassionally fun to watch. Its not a bad series it just comes off lacking especially half way into it there is a string of really boring episodes and the one with the cactus just comes out of nowhere. Sidenote: Crappy PS2 had trouble playing the nudity/unaried episode at the hotspring. Not sure if this is common for PS2 or if it is just mine. In other words watch it on a different Dvd player.

This is a well made dvd set. I watched the whole series mostly with the dub on. I did watch a few with in Japanese with the English subtitle, though, because the English dialogue was starting to get very annoying. Despite how well made this dvd set was, I dreaded watching through this series. The characters are all really annoying and uninteresting. I forced myself to finish the series, and felt even more dissatisfied. Reviews fI've read in the past compared this series with Cowboy Bebop. I guess, one could find similarities. But don't mistaken it to be even half as good as Bebop.

Another great Region 1 rip from FX. The English dub is included as well as the japanese audio and optional subtitles. Considering that 26 episodes are squeezed onto 3 disks, it's amazing that the video is still very clear and looks pretty much DVD quality. This is another great job from FX!

Well, I was very skeptical as most were when they bought their first FX title. I got the DVD set expecting the best, and even though I didn't get the "best"...I most definitely got something I will be hanging on to for a long time. First of all, lets look at the comparison: R1s (left) | FX (right) Discs: 6 (3 volumes) / 3 (1 volume) Episodes per disc: 4 avg. / 9 avg. Price for whole series: $90+ / $30 Overall quality: 5 out of 5 / 4 out of 5 Languages: Eng-Jap / Eng-Jap Extras?: Yes / Yes Long credit intro before start menu: Yes / No SCORE: R1 = 1 ; FX = 6 Looks pretty one sided eh? Well, lets take a closer look at the supposed winner... Video (4/5) - The video is a tad bit darker and faded than the R1s, as I compared. In most episodes its not that bad, but unfortunately the first episode is one of the worst. Sometimes you can't make out any detail. But still its better than VHS somewhat. Audio (4/5) - "This ain't no dolby digital", at least from what I can tell. The special fx sounds really come through on my speakers for the R1, but are dumbed down somewhat in this version. This is pretty minor though, as most wont' be able to tell. Menu (3/5) - I made this its own section because this has a few issues. The menues are obviously R1 rip. The menus are changed a little bit to suit more episodes (now one disc holds 2 discs worth of episodes), but the audio suffers a little during this. The background music is switched around from the R1's so much so that its kinda' annoying...and the video from going from menu to menu doesn't exactly flow very smoothly. Although this is somewhat minor, I found it sorta' crappy. Subtitles (4.5/5) - Just like in the R1 release, the subtitles are a little off, if a little more in this version. They leave out a bunch of words sometimes, as the subtitles are basically the "jest" of the conversation. Although this didn't bother me much at all. Packaging (5+/5) - The packaging is simply amazing! I love the way this is set up so much that it actually makes up for the little "bad things" in the DVD. It unfolds a couple of times to reveal 3 discs, and the art is fantastic. You have to see it to understand why I gave it so good of a rating. Overall (4.5/5) - If I had to choose this or the R1, I would choose the R1....but only if I had $90+ to spend that is! This is a great bargain and I would recommend it to DVD purists of all types. I am very very picky on DVDs and was very skeptical on this. I expected a crappy VCD quality DVD, but was obviously underestimating FX's abilities. This deserves close to 5 stars but it should be marked off for a few of the things I couldn't let go. The only way I will part with this is if the new R1 box set that is coming out later this year is better looking. But its going to be hard to beat this deal. P.S: I also like how the FX DVD gets "straight to the point" by starting the main menu when you put in the disc. Other DVDs will tend to advertise their logo at the beginning, and actually the R1s of Outlaw Star advertise like 4 companies that take a while to finish. But the FX DVD's aren't like that at all, they don't even advertise their OWN logo! That's a bonus point for FX. :) edited by Makaar on 19 Jul 2002 1:27 pm

In general, the video quality was excellent. There were a couple scenes where there was a lot of pixilation, but these were few and far apart, and very short.

Overall, the audio was fine, but there were about 6 parts where the English track cut out for about a half a second, and the Japanese track seemed to be just the littlest bit behind the video, but not enough to distract you.

The video quality on this set is amazing when you realize they compacted the whole series onto 3 discs AND included TWO audio tracks. Almost no pixelation, though it's a very dark transfer so in some scenes it's very hard to see what's going if you're in a bright room.

Although some people have had drop-out problems, I didn't have any audio problems with this set. The English tracks is a little louder and clearer than the japanese track though.

I wish some of the North American companies would take a cue from FX and release a whole series in a nice compact set like this. Even at double the price, it's still a bargain and I'm willing to bet that the extra sales would more than compensate for the decrease in profit margin. This is what I'm looking for when I hand out five star ratings. Great video (although a few of the darker scenes seem just a bit too dark), great audio (even the horrible dubs), and great subtitles that have been edited and spell checked. It would be nice to see this kind of quality from an original HK release without having to wait for the R1s to come out first. Of course... I've got my jammies on so I must be dreaming... g'night

This set makes me have new respect for buying import anime. Usually the video quality is so so and the subtitles are imposible to make sense of, but not this set. It even has the US english dub! Comment:
this is one of my favorite series, and they did an amazing job on this set. i must warn though, i dont have the R1's to compare to, but i did my best with the review. it all appears to be an r1 rip though Video - 4 seems to be just barely under dvd quality for some reason. could just be me. there is no visible pixelation that i could find anywhere, even in the high motion scenes. it seems better than VHS but not quite dvd for some reason. Audio - 4 excellent audio in my opinion. both japanese and english tracks are great. it says its ac3 2 channel. i dont have a 5.1 surround system or anything. but it sounded awesome on my plain stereo setup. Subtitles - 4 Great subs. R1 rip its easy to tell. perfect on all standards. just seems to me that the subs are kinda americanized. from what i can tell (though i could be wrong) the best translations dont always go with the english dub word for word. this is pretty close to the english dub. it could be that the dubbing translation went with the real translation more or something. i dont know well, im no expert. but i know i love this set. easily worth the low cost of $40. sorry if my opinions are incorrect or something
