This is a decent version if you understand japanese and don't need english subs, and want to see some music videos by the Pillows. Otherwise get the english dubs (One of the very, very few decent dubs around)

The video was very good. I could barely notice some pixelation, but it was really good. This series has lots of high action sequences and it was handled well.

I got this set at a convention because I have read way too much about problems with the new 'perfect' edition. I really enjoyed this set and it shows that MI does dvd rips very well.

If their was any pixilation or grain, i didn't see it at all. I was amazed at the video quality in this set, colors were vibrant, picture was clear. A great job by MI. MI logo on startup, starting of the video, and about halfway through. These are found in the upper left hand corner, but disapear after 3-4 seconds, no emails or anything.
Audio:
Audio was sharp and crystal clear, strong jap dub track. Bout all i can say, no softness that i noticed, just nice audio.

All in all, this is a great disk by MI, video is great, audio is clear, and the subs are some of the best ive seen. This disk comes with three extras. One is a little, well what seemed like to me a commercial for FLCL, showing various things. You get a ending, not sure if its creditless, and their is a pillows music video. Unfortunatley, the commercial thing isn't subtitled, but no biggie. Overall, the MI set is the best out their that ive seen, if you can't spare the cash for the R1's , pick this set up.

Two or three times, the MI info comes up on the screen for a few seconds, along with the MI logo. It's not a big problem though, you hardly notice it, and it's at the beginning of episodes. There are chapter breaks at each episode. The DVD includes some extras, like a music video for Ride on Shooting Star by The Pillows, and a textless version of the ending (same song). The menu is also animated, which I found pretty cool. The series is beautifully animated, and the soundtrack is also excellent (almost all provided by The Pillows, a Japanese band). Gainax certainly doesn't fail to disappoint with this one! It's filled with lots of pop culture references, and is generally just very cool :). This set is hard to find nowadays, I'm glad I got my hands on a copy when it first came out. The R1 version comes on three discs (and isn't all out as of this time). Stupid greedy companies ;). Oh well. Check this disc out if you can find it!

The Menus are in English. Video : 5/5. The Image is Great. DVD Rip. No problems. Audio : 4.5/5. No problems , it'sJapanese 2 ch and not 5.1 though. Subtitles : 4/5. For the most part they are very good, the gramar is good, hardly any spelling mistakes , but sometimes they just go a bit too fast. You just have to pay atencion, also the pace of the story is extremely fast. The timings are ok , not perfect but pretty good. Don't worry about wondering what's going on, the story is WEIRD :) Extras : 3 music videos Package : It comes in a standard Plastic Fold. Overall : It's a Great DVD overall, not perfect subtitles but close enough. I Warn you though , that this is a very strange Anime :) Insane really :) You will undestand what i mean when you see it :) edited by The Swan on 21 Nov 2002 6:00 pm edited by The Swan on 21 Nov 2002 6:01 pm edited by The Swan on 21 Nov 2002 6:01 pm

This is a great series that doesn't really go anywhere and doesn't really have much of a story but is highly entertaining. Video : 4.8/5 I would have gave it a perfect score if not for the green translucent bar that appears once in a while. You problably won't even notice it if you didn't know about it (but now you do so I'm sorry) Audio: 5/5 Great, no problems at all. I substracted .5 because it wasn't in 5.1 , added .5 because the soundtrack kicks ass. Subtitles: 4.5/5 Very good english with few spelling mistakes, subtitles can go by a bit too fast sometimes but that's because their can be a lot of dialogue in a short period of time. R1's are gonna have 2 episodes a dvd but has tons of goodies and extras. So if you got the money buy them instead, if you're like 95% of us and can't afford 6 episodes for 75$ buy this instead, the quality of the set is great as is the series.

Now this anime is totally weird. OK, it has some kind of story. And if you ever wanted to see a Vespa riding alien heroine, who fights those nasty robots by hitting them with her left handed Rickenbacker bass guitar: this is it! But make sure that you have seen other animes before, or you won't get all the references this series makes. Video: Occasional pixellation. And the translucent green bars show up now and then. (4/5) Audio: Perfect (5/5) Subs: Very good, but with some slight mistimings from time to time. (4/5)

VIDEO: Spectacular video quality. Some of the best ever. PERIOD. Not just some of the best on an HK DVD. Perhaps it's just that this series is pretty hard to fu** up, seeing as how it's so pretty. GRADE: A+ AUDIO: Pretty good. Nothing special, and at the same time, nothing horrible. Better than some of the other stuff I've heard/seen. Also, the soundtrack is a must-have. GRADE: B+ SUBTITLES: Very, very, very, very good. Some awesome stuff here. If my mother cared, and I didn't live with her, I'd write to her about it. Possibly, the only problem was in the later episodes, they used a lot of quotation marks. That didn't bother me at all, though. Not at all. Quotation marks never do, really. GRADE: A+ SERIES: A very wonderful, and amazing series, WITH A PLOT. I've heard lots of people complain that this series has no plot, whatsoever, well they're wrong. If you don't like this show, why don't you tell me, so I can kill you very, very brutally, so that blood spews from every already-existing hole in your body. GRADE: A+ MENUS: They drove me insane. They were nice, but that small bit from the closing sequence that was in live action freaked me out at first. The artwork on all the menus was very, very nice too. The sub menus were good, but not as good as the main menu was. GRADE: A- PACKAGING: Normal, really. The cover art was pretty, so I have no real problems. GRADE: A+ CHAPTER STOPS: One an episode, as usual. As I have done, and will continue to do, I will not lower the score at all because of this, seeing as how I'm used to it, after all this time. GRADE: B+ EXTRA FEATURES: I've heard that these exist on this disc, but if so, I've never seen them, and I've looked everywhere possible for them. Ah, well. GRADE: Possibly N/A DISC OPINION: This is a definite must-have for anyone who likes anime, or anyone who likes anything. I'm never buying the Region One discs, because stupid Synch-Point will be releasing them two episodes a disc. Stupid Synch-Point. First, they sell the rights of Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure, then they screw over Furi Kuri. (Or Fooly Cooly. Whichever you fancy.) GRADE: A+

This is the most insane thing... ever. -_- Video-- (5/5) Great! Pretty much perfect, even if all six episodes on one DVD-5 (??). ^_^ Gotta love the GAINAX animation, too! ^_^ Audio-- (5/5) No problems here! ^_^ Subtitles-- (4.5/5) Almost flawless. No spelling errors, or typos, or anything. Just, they went a little too fast sometimes, and at some points they used "quotation marks" in random "places", and they weren't really "needed". ^_^ Very awesome! =D Content-- (5/5) As I said, insane. THE most insane thing ever. Very good, and very enjoyable, none-the-less. ^_^ Buy this now.

To start off the review, this DVD is NOT on a DVD-5, but in fact is on a DVD-9, so that means that you won't have to worry about sucky DVD video from an overy Compressed VOB. Anyways, this show is really funny. Though not the super Japanese Humor that isn't funny over, but humor that translates very well. Now onto the various parts of the DVD. Video 5/5 The video in this DVD is Superb. There is very little Compression pixelation (even in high motion scenes). The video looks almost perfect in most aspects. The problems I have (albeit small) are that the video is a little bland in color. Even on the Vivid color setting on PowerDVD. However, the show may have just been painted that way, it seemed a little bland. no worries on the video, it looks really good. Audio 5/5 The video in this series rocked in many aspects. No there isn't 5.1 audio. However, they got the pillows (a japanese Band) to make the soundtrack. The best description I found for the pillows are "the beatles meet the Pixies". They have a good mix of soft and hard songs, and they just have really good music. The audio on this set has no degredation and is really clear through both my Stereo and Headphones). Subtitles 4/5 This part urked me a bit. The subs were pretty good in that they had little spelling errors, and the engrish was cut down immesnly (I commend MI for this, as I think they were HK originals), however there are two things that bothered me a bit A) They had some line breaks spelled out in the dialogue so there wasn't a line break, and it looked like "Hey/nNoata" with the "/n" between words B) The timing was really screwy in parts. When people talked fast, they had some lines with lots of Dialogue flash by really quickly. I had to pause and rewind a few times, (good thing I didn't have to convert from Engrish to Enlish). Other than that the Subs are pretty decent. Overall the DVD was excellent. The video, audio and subs had very little flaws, and the few that were apparent weren't glaring. The movie is a good buy since the R1 DVDs will cost close to or above $90, and the R2 Japanese ones are even more expensive ($31*6 +S&H = El Expensivo). So at $12 or less, this is a wonderful deal, and the show it outlandishly hilarous and fun to watch. So to finish this review, off I say GET THIS DVD, you won't be disapointed.

I would have to disagree slightly with dosdemon, I hadn't seen the fansubs, and I didn't have a whole lot of trouble following things when the big timing error happens. Video is really good quality, as the others said there is a little grain here & there but it's no big deal really. Audio is rockin! The sound is quite nice. This DVD sounds great through my HTS. Subs are good, but there are some big timing errors in a couple places. It didn't bother me though, but I'm sure a few people will be put off by that. Overall, this is a great release. Good luck finding it though, heh. edited by Great Muta on 26 Apr 2002 9:51 pm

Video: Great, R2 DVD rip. Only problem is a LITTLE compression artifacts (grain) but it's barelynoticable. Near perfect. Audio: Sounds perfect to me. Ride on Shooting Star comes of really nice ;) Subs: Ep 1 is fansubbed, ep 2-6 are supposed to be from the R2. They are very good, though there are some timing problems. But again, nothing to worry about. Great disc overall! Especially when you're considering that it's 6 eps on 1 disc.

I really liked this DVD, not only because it's possibly my favorite OVA ever, but because MI put out an awesome release this time. Video: Very, very good. I was not expecting this from a DVD with six episodes on it. There is some artifacting, however. And I saw rainbows a couple times (nothing to worry about, it's barely noticeable). Audio: Holy shit. I don't think it's 5.1 but it still knocked my socks off. This thing is LOUD. Subtitles: These irked me a bit. This disc is engrish free, but there are some major timing issues at certain points that drove me up the wall. If you've never seen this show before, wait for the R1's because the timing can actually ruin a couple scenes (it sounds like soemone else is saying the lines that are being displayed, and it makes no sense)... if you have seen the digisubs or the R2's then by all means get this disc. Contrary to popular belif, the script on episode 1 IS NOT the fansub script, I have no idea where this script came from but it's not the one I'm used to. The rest of the subs are from the R2's, although the damn quotes come up now and then (this seems to be a MI trademark). Other: This disc came with extras, which is not usually the case with HK's. you get a creditless ending, a Pillows music video, and what I assume to be a japanese tv spot advertising FLCL, this stuff is much appreciated and adds to the value of this disc. A small MI watermark shows up once per episode. it 's hardly noticeable. conclusion, get it if you've seen FLCL and like it. if you haven't seen it, wait for the R1's.
