Video was pretty good for its time. I agree its a little like VHS quality but I would say a little better. Very negotiable.
Audio:
Pretty good audio here. Not as crisp and clear as a true dvd would be but you can put up with it. Pretty much R1 rips.

Video was the biggest problem with this set, though it wasn't that bad. For some reason, it always had a sort of VHS grain to it, though I know it was ripped from R1. It just didn't look as vibrant as I thought it could, especially since this isn't that action-packed of a series.
Audio:
Overall, it sounded pretty good. I watched it with the English dub track, since I love this dub, and it seemed a bit lower compared to the Japanese audio track. Not really muffled, but not as loud and clear as the Japanese one. Also, on Episode 24 (I believe), the dub track started having problems. A sort of minor audio sound that I don't know how to describe. It'd pop in and out and was pretty irritating. I switched to subbed for that time and it sounded great. Excellent if you're watching it subbed, but a little flawed on the dub.

Pretty decent set. Well worth the money. Packaging: 5|5 Very nice gatefold with beautiful art from the series. The discs themselves look pretty good, too. You could fool someone into thinking this was an official set easily. Disc Layout: One chapter stop to mark each episode. Pretty disappointing as the opening song isn't that great, so it requires a bit of fast-forwarding. Not a big complaint, but one of those minor things that could have made a big difference. Note: Episode 26 starts weird. The chapter stop is at Episode 25's "Next Episode Preview" and fooled me into thinking Episode 26 was nonexistant. Either watch it or fast-forward here and don't panic like I did ;] This disc also contains extras which are pretty interesting. Nothing too great, but some character descriptions and sketch art. Overall, this set was well worth the money. I didn't really care for the series as much as I thought I would, seeing as I loved the OAVs, but its still well worth the money.

(5/5) The Audio is cool too, except that the japanese track is louder than the engish one. (4/5) The Subs, are pretty accurate, i hardly have found problems with it. (5/5) Overall this is a must buy if you like Tenchi, or if you just want to add it to your collection. (5/5)

Here's my review: Video: 4/5 The Pixellation is barely noticeable but overall It looks great! Audio: 4.5/5 The Japanese track is awesome! I found no problems. I watched the english dub for a couple seconds and it was fine except it was lower than the Japanese track. Subtitles: 5/5 R1 Rip. 'Nuff said. Content: 4.5/5 I Love Tenchi!! But since I like the OVA better, I'm subtracting 1/2 a point. Package Design: 4/5 The Cardboard fold out design rocks! My only problem is that the logo is EVERYWHERE. It gets kind of annoying. Other than that, it's great quality. A lot thicker than the R1 Tenchi OVA which is nice.

FX has now become my favorite HK dvd company! I LITERALLY love them. First with Trigun, now with this gem. This is a MARVELOUS disc. Video-- (4/5) Some excellent video quality here! The animation is pretty enough, but the beautiful video quality will ADD to it's perfection. I could barely believe that you guys gave it a three on it's main page! ;_; It deserves better! ANYWHO! I really liked the video quality! Very nice! ^_^ Audio-- (5/5) Some marvelous audio as well! Some of the best around. Especially, since I watch with the volume ALL the way up. :^P (The voices will disturb my parents most of the time, but who gives a rat's ass? I sure as hell don't.) Subtitles-- (5/5) Pure gold! More than likely, a direct R1 rip! (I have never seen the R1, so I wouldn't know.) This disc's subtitles can be compared to that of Berserk and Vampire Hunter D: Special Edition. (Which, in my opinion, have the best subtitles on any HK dvd ever.) But, to get on with it: These subs are beautiful. End of story. Content-- (3.5/5) I am not a very big Tenchi fan, but I must say that I enjoyed this delightful adventure! It was a fun ride that any respectable anime fan would enjoy. There is even a dub track for everyone who prfers dubs. (i.e. NOT ME.) I HIGHLY suggest this title. It is very, very awesome, and I also HIGHLY suggest this HK dvd. It is a gem in HK dvd history.

Review of Tenchi Universe Box Set [FX] ------------------------------------------------ This is a fantastic series that will appeal to most fans of comedy anime. The FloraChanxxx version is an R1 rip so nearly everything about it is of a high quality. Video: 4 -Good quality overall -R1 rip -Macroblocking during all action-intense scenes. Note: This is noticeable, but should not deter you from saving the $100 or so dollars over the R1 release. *The Macroblocking issue is the only major problem with this HK release.* Sound: 5 -Perfect! No complaints here. -Great music & Sound effects Subtitles: 4 1/2 -Near perfect (r1 rip) -Only negative is that the intro to one episode is unsubbed. I recommend switching to the English audio track during this short problem. Extras: 5 -Horray! An HK release with extras. -Line art gallery, character data, non-credit opening/ending. Menus: 5 -Non-Animated, attractive, effective -contains: Play Video, Setup, Extras, Scene Access -Background music! Packaging: 5 -Fantastic! Soft paper box containing 3 individual DVD cases. -The art on box/cases/DVDs is great! Content: 4 1/2 -Love Story -Comedy!! -All girls.. 1 guy If you liked Love Hina & Saber Marionette J then this is probably for you. --- This is a good series, but not my favorite of the Tenchi animes. I recommend that you watch all of the following Tenchi DVDs: 1. Tenchi Muyo OVA Box Set (my personal favorite) 2. Tenchi Universe Box Set 3. Tenchi in Tokyo Series 4. Tenchi muyo in love [Movie] 5. The daughter of Darkness [Movie] 6. Tenchi Forever [Movie] The 3 series are actually retellings of the Tenchi story but are done completely differently so they are all interesting to watch. Just don't expect the next series to pick up where the first left off! Note: You can watch the movies at any time, but try to see atleast one Tenchi series before doing so. The character background is almost a necessity to the enjoyment of the movies. --- In conclusion, I think that most fans of all girls & 1 guy comedy will really enjoy this series! The quality is great for the price and this is definetly upper-end as far as HK anime is concerned. Congratulations FloraChanxxx on another fantastic release! -lifestop

This set is just a repackaging of the AV set that came out a bit ago. But now on to the review. This looks to be a direct R1 rip. The credits are in English instead of Japanese. And there is the English Dub as well as part of it. This set is pretty good, but suffers from some over compression here and there. Video - 3/5 The Video in this release is pretty compressed. There are motion blocks on high motion scenes. However, on low motion scenes, the video is very crisp and clear. There is little breakup on those scenes. The macroblocks are only really apparent on a computer monitor, on a TV, the video looks really good as well. The video overall is very colorful (which is a good thing in this series, since the animation is beautiful). Audio - 4/5 The audio is there, and pretty good sounding. The Dub is one of the few that I actually liked, and can stand watching, however, the japanese track is kinda annoying that there is a low hum in the back ground. But not too be too concerned (actually took me a while to hear it, and I listen to it pretty koud), it's just there, but doesn't really get in the way. Subs - 5/5 The Subtitles are perfect and dead on. As I said before this is a R1 rip so the subs to seem to be on par with the R1 dvds in terms of readability. So far I haven't seen any mistimings, and I only saw one instance with missing subs (an intro on episode 10 I believe), and that was the only case where that happened, and in those cases you can switch to Dub. Overall this set is pretty good in that it has some really good quality subs, audio and the video isn't all that bad at all. edited by kakomu on 08 Jun 2002 11:16 am

VIDEO: OK. Definition quality is comparable to VHS. Suffers from a wee bit of pixelation during motion-intense scenes & explosions. AUDIO: Very good. SUBS: Just about perfect. There's a brief scene (introducing the bounty hunter in an alien bar) that's without subs, but it's no great loss. All in all, a great set, and definitely worth purchasing. I'd place it in the "series that's not good enough to pay the full price for the legit R1 releases, but surely worth the $30 for a HK bootleg" category.
