The video quality was great, none of the weird or strange distortions appeared.

Great audio quality.

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE SUBS! This set had the worst subs out of the two boxsets. Goodness, the names were all spelled wrong and translated wrong, for a single character, thy had like... 3-4 different names. Seemed like 4 different teams of translators worked throughout this series. On episode 1 during the second half of the entire series the subs were delayed.

Comment:

This is a favorite of mine actually, not this set, but the FX set. The story itself is actually very hilarious with a lot of drama, action and a dash of innocent romance. The charcter expressions were well done and matched many of the different moods and situations throughout this series. If you want to see this, which I highly recommend, get the FX version.

Very nice. Clear picture

very good here as well, but keep reading and you'll find out the truth.....

Subtitle:

I am very sorry fellow reviewers, but I must blow my nose at you a second timeh (monty python)... any anime that is so messed up and names people "RED HAT" and Kyo = Cap... cannot have a good review and the reviewer is then questioned if they really watched it? If they did they can tell you that later the subs only get worse. Emotional moments get lost in the poor translation, and when Yuki's one brother (the cow) comes on and speaks very fast.... PLEASE people you did not watch this if you say the subs were good. KEEP YOUR FANSUBS PEOPLE this is garbage... when the speech gets fast it is like they just hit the keyboard randomly and said the hell with it, they won't be able to read that fast anyway....

Comment:

I spent money on this and it gets abandoned to a dusty corner never to be watched again - I plan on buying the US releases.

The video quality was really good to me. It looked like real dvd quality. However I own the Region 1 verson of this and the region 1 dvd has better color and quality. So I think that the video quality on Fruits Basket Part 1 could be between a VHS or a DVD quality rip. But still it is watchable. ^_^

Audio:

The sound was really well done. But at some points the sound was kinda not loud. So i had to turn up the volume a lot. But it is still acceptable. I would say the sound quality is excellent ^^. but needs a little work on it.

Subtitle:

The subtitles were totally understandable and readable but it has many flaws. In episode 1 the subtitles were mistimed tp about 1 to 3 seconds. on this whole dvd set the subtitles had some grammar and spelling mistakes. This is quite common with Hong Kong Anime DVDs. The biggest flaw in this dvd is the names of the characters they are all spelled wrong and mispronounced. However on episodes 11-13 the subtitles were perfect: the names were spelled right with just little grammar errors and spelling mistakes. Here are the wrong names translated into the right names. Toi Pentan=Tohru Honda , Yuihe Chomore=Yuki Sohma, Chemu=Shigure , Flower=Hana, Red Leaf=Momiji, Pluto=Hatori, Henyan=Akito, Cap=Kyo,

Comment:

This whole dvd set is perfect! It just needs work on the subtitles. I only paid $19.99 for this set. But i think it was worth it! So buy this one now before it gets discontinued!

Very good transfer, and nothing which detracted me watching this beautiful series. No pixelation or anything

The audio sounded good, so no problem there

ARRGHHH!!!, the biggest gripe with this box is the use of chinese names which totally throws you off, there's some typo mistakes and engrisch, however, you still be able to understand the series but it does take some working out on moments.

Comment:

Great series, fantastic animation, brillant story and is one of my favourite anime series this year. If you can get past the use if chinese names, its a great title to pick up

Video is very good. 1 star minus for some (rare) dropouts and the translucent green bars, that appear from time to time.

Audio:

Noticed nothing bad on my simple TV speakers

Subtitle:

For the first 10 eps subs are bad HK originals. Almost every possible grammar mistake is there: Exchanging of he/she; me/you; no/yes; past and present tense etc. Also in the first ep, subs are 1 line late. And all the names are screwed up. Honda = Pentan, Hana = Flower etc. It still is understandable, though. The last 3 eps have good fansubs with correct names and only your normal amount of minor flaws (some typos, occasional mistiming)

Comment:

Nice content with bad subs. My "Engrish" was good enough to follow the show, but I can only recommend this, if you have experience with HK original subs and know what you'll get.

Okay...here we go. In this set you'll get their chinese names for a part of the show a think. Its pretty akward.

Comment:

Its okay. A pretty funny anime over all so go get it. You'll get over the names, i did, so did my entire anime club, after like the 5th episode.

The video and audio are excellent and should be given a perfect 5/5. The only problem is the subtitle which has bad grammer and occasional spelling errors. The names are also in chinese.... Only the last TWO episodes are ripped from fan subs. It is still recommended because of the excellent video and audio.

Video and audio both seem to be a direct R2 rip so the quality is great. The Subtitles aren't as bad as other videos I own. The timing of the first episode is one sentance off which sucks pretty hard. Other than that, I'm used to the confusion between he and she as well as the switching of positive and negative meanings. The story is pretty straightforward so the flaws are pretty easy to over look. I gave 3 out of five stars as this is about average quality for HK subs. The story is way out there. I'm not even sure that I can begin to explain it. It's like part Ranma 1/2, part Love Hina, and part something else I can't name right now. It's a high school romance where the main female has been living on her own in a tent since her mom died (dad died a long time ago). She ends up friends with the most sought after boy in the school. He and his family have a big secret, they all turn into animals from the Chinese calendar when they get touched by a member of the opposite sex. I don't want to say too much more. Just watch the video and go along for the ride. The animation is a mix of panning stills, standard animation, and animation with digital effects. They do a great job of telling the story and adjusting the mood though use of these different animation techniques.

Excellent video, must be R2, I haven't noticed any problems what so ever!

Excellent 2 channel dolby digital, no hum or anything to complain about that I've noticed! edited by flasm on 08 Apr 2002 10:52 am

Subtitle:

they decided to use fansubs on only the last 3 or 4 eps.! I compared them to the fansubs and although they mostly make sense, they still lose a lot of the meanings in many parts and mess up many of the jokes. they confuse he for she, I for he or she, stuff like that constantly the names change a good bit. For some the subs won't really bother them, I've seen 22 of the fansubs and these subs on the dvd do retain most of the meaning for most of the show, but the delivery of the lines are quite strange at time and you really got to think to figure it out.

Well.... this if you don't know is a very excellent series, combining many different elements very well, like comedy, romance, etc. Video- Excellent video, must be R2, I haven't noticed any problems what so ever! Audio- Excellent 2 channel dolby digital, no hum or anything to complain about that I've noticed! and now the Subs... this is very very disappointing, I mean there are so many fansubs lying around for this one and they decided to use them on only the last 3 or 4 eps.!!!!! The quality of the other shows are pretty bad, I compared them to the fansubs and although they mostly make sense, they still lose a lot of the meanings in many parts and mess up many of the jokes. they confuse he for she, I for he or she, stuff like that constantly the names change a good bit. For some the subs won't really bother them, I've seen 22 of the fansubs and these subs on the dvd do retain most of the meaning for most of the show, but the delivery of the lines are quite strange at time and you really got to think to figure it out. edited by flasm on 08 Apr 2002 10:51 am
