New to anime!

Hey all..

Since I'm new to anime (I've only seen and own Akira), I'm wondering where should I start? What films should I see first? Who are the best anime makers? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

its all depends on your tastes... here's some of all time greatest:


Berserk (fighting, swords, blood, cutting of limbs etc)
Trigun (guns, western type future, funny)
Cowboy Bebop (guns, girls, beef rice, funny yet serious)
Irresponsible Captain Tylor (funny, funny, too funny, ouch my stomach hurts its so funny)
Spirited Away (classic, just hit theatres, own it now!)


many many more... all depends on your taste

Are there lots more that kind of resemble Akira? As in futuristic/post-apocalypse genre?

Try Berserk... its got that on the edge of apocalypse atmosphear but set in the medieval times.... Trigun got that post apocalypse but its a comedy more than anything else

Also Serial Experiments Lain got that Matrix type theme of questioning your own existance... which is one of main themes in Akira... but its kinda hard to find "resemble *title*" anime

Definetly own Berserk. It is to great a series not to see. Trigun is good it starts with comedy and ends with drama (much like the manga) For an adventure series go for One Piece its pirates on the high seas. Love Hina is a good romance comedy and also try Dragonball (tho there aren't any with japanese tracks yet) so get fansubs to hold you off. But that is just a few there are tons more great shows but these are all good stepping stones. 8O 8O

Record of lodoss war OAV is best

Definately check out Record of Lodoss War OAV and TV. Try Escaflowne. Gundam Wing is very cool. My favorites would have to be Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road, Ranma 1/2, and Inu Yasha. Inu Yasha has a lot of fantasy type stuff in it. :mrgreen:

Since you liked Akira I think you should get Ghost in the Shell.

As for series definitly cowboy bebop and berserk . . . ohh and hellsing too.

You also might want to watch metropolis . . . even though I hated the style of animation.

Yes slayers is a good anime to watch.. Also Record of Lodass Wars like JJ said.. And i will have to agree Beserk is a Must watch.. Others that i would also recommend is
Initial D (Only if you like cars)
Flame of Recca
Kimigure Orange Road
Kenshin (Another Must)
Ranma 1/2
Cowboy Bebop

Movies i think you should also watch Ninja Scroll, Ghost in teh Shell and Armitage III Poly Matrix.. Duel matrix is allright but they could of done alot better with it..
thats my short recommendation.. ;o) but there are so many others to watch also..
