I have seen all 3 of Abe's series -- Haibane, Lain, and Niea Under 7 (which was released between Lain and Haibane). I like Niea the best, as it has more humor and local "atmosphere" (it's about a cram school student sharing her bedroom with a good-for-nothing alien).
I like Haibane very much too, but it gets slow in some parts. The scenery and characters are gorgeous, though. Abe has done a real good job artistically in this one.
Andwhile I did see all of lain, I got rid of my set shortly afterward -- I find it very slow and boring. And the plot line is still confusing at the end. But, as they say, it's an acquired taste.
