why do some ppl like their anime dubbed?

Well I've never heard the Kenshin dub and that is something I never intend to do cause the setting is all wrong. People in ancient Japan should be speaking Japanese, not english. Just my thoughts.

You sound kinda like my dad who claims that if the Japanese draw their cartoon characters to look like american people (he was talking about Vash mainly), then they shouldn't even use Japanese dialogue. Which then again my father also says all anime characters look like girls.

I guess I can see where you're coming from.

I'm a bit of in the head in that I'll be watching Trigun, & wonder how the characters in the show understand each other, & then remember it's a Japanese Dub...Big Grin
My Soul Brings Tears to Satanic Eyes.

If Max Collins, Matt Skiba, Jimmy Urine, & Mark Phillips had a child it would be one fu*ked up mofo, but 'it' would be the God of music.

I tend to watch my anime subbed.. But for the second viewing, I prefer to watch it dubbed, just so I've seen the series both ways. I don't know how many of you can pick up japanese words here and there by watching your anime subbed, but that's my favorite reason to skip the dubs for viewing #1.. I can usually pick up at least one new word per series. Don't get me wrong, I still can't watch anime unsubbed, but I can grasp the meanings of a lot of sentences..A few years ago, I would have never been able to say that. So, aside from enjoying the experience of listening to the original VA's, sometimes I learn new words, and sometimes I can even realize when a subtitle isn't as accurate as it could be..I do enjoy the occasional dub, but I dunno, I just feel like I get more out of a series when I watch it with Japanese audio. Ideally, though, like I would assume the majority of you, I prefer getting the bilingual versions of stuff. That way I can choose either way, and maybe watch a series with someone who refuses to watch something subbed.

I do like watching subtitled Anime, however I do chose to watch Dubbed more often than not. The reason for this is if I'm doing something else I don't miss out at what they are saying because I have to take my eyes off the screen. Also my wife gets a head ache whenever she tries to read subtitles and watch the movie at one, so the stuff we both like we have to have dubbed.

I have tried to watch dubbed anime before, but I always end up switching back to the Japanese track after a few minutes. It REALLY is not the same!

I still contend that a lot is lost in the dub, especially emotions. Japanese voice actors are wonderful at expressing joy, anger, sadness, etc, in their voice depictions. I really can't say the same for English voice actors. Often times a scene is supposed to project certain tension, anger, joy in the atmosphere, which you can tell by the tone of the voices, but English dubs, most often end up missing all if not most of the feeling that was supposed to be projected.

Perhaps I am just being picky....

See this has been my view on most anime from the get go. Kenshin I watch the Dub only Ancient japan I want to hear japanese. Same For ROLW they have a Mytical Europe setting with knights and what not I love the English hands down. But (there is always a but)

I have my series like Ranma, Slayers, Trigun, & Hellsing. Trigun was so well done and the whole western feel made the english feel very natural. Hellsing now we are talking 100% europe here and the Butler sounds like a badass in english where as in the Japanese he sounds a little wimpy. Slayers it falls into the ROLW area and the english is off the hook, but on the same note Megumi Hayashibara, is the voice of Lina and she is at the top of the game when it comes to JP voice acting...

Ranma I have a love hate relationship with the voice acting. The first 4 seasons were done by a core cast of VA and the male voice of Ranma, and Ryouga were great (no tony the tiger puns please) but then VIZ took over and the VA's for those two charcters left (or were fired what ever) and the new actors left me with a bad feeling in my ear. So I went to the Japanese track haven't looked back. Megumi Hayashibara is the voice of Female ranma and it works great. But have no doubt isf I am watching a Season 4 or before I will listen to in english. Oh well enough out of...sorry for the Rant....

i like english and japanese dubs although i greatly prefer the japanese, its the original language in which the anime was intended to be watched. and id like to point out that dubbing in japan is done much much better, this is mainly because anime is so mainstream and voice actors are hailed almost as much as actors in the west. basically the average japanese dub is as good as the dubs for either princess mononoke or spirited away where there is actually effort to perfect characters voices.

i only bother with english dubs cause im lazy and id usually watch the japanese first. what i hate most about eng dubs is the americanisms they add in (a la "way to go dude", "to boot" ect...), it says theyre in japan and yet they insist talkin like surfers, whats with that?

my basic conclusion is that i much prefer japanese dub but ill watch an english one if its there cause im lazy, but after i watch the japanese!

I don't like watching dubs. OK, some German dubs I watched were allright (like Mononoke or Spirited Away), but most of them are really bad. And the English dubs are even worse. I had to watch the CCS movie with English dub (because there were no subs on the disc), and it's so disturbing to have 12 year old Sakura sounding like a 25 year old porn actress.

I'd like to point out not ALL anime is like that. Vampire Hunter D was originally done in English, later in Japanese. Gundam 0079 was overviewed by Tomino when the dub was made, and he wanted it to be done how it was.

And the way anime was intended to be watched was without subtitles, so if you're watching it WITH subtitles, your flawing your own logic there.

Where I used to work people would occasionally special order anime videos/ DVDs. I found that a majority of those people who wanted the "Dubbed" versions was simply because they couldn't read. I even had one guy SPELL the titles out to me over the phone because he was too goddamn stupid to figure out the names of the videos he wanted. I'm talking about simple words like "El Hazard" and "Atragon".

One really couldn't tell unless they knew the language itself. Also, from what I can tell, a lot of VAs also sound kinda bored...

That's localisation. I'm not too fond of it myself, especially when it's 'surfer' talk or profanity (I'm not a prude, but sometimes the actual swear words seem a little strange). However, I can't complain because it's US companies acquiring the licenses for American audiences. If they didn't bother I wouldn't get to see much anime with decent subs at all.

Plus, unless it's dubtitles, localisation doesn't affect subtitles as much or at least isn't as extreme.

Anyway, it's not just US localisation. One the Takeshi Kitano movies I saw recently had subtitles localised for the UK. Watching Yakuza refer to "blokes" and "birds" was very strange.

There is one thing about japanese that is far superior to dubs. It is the way they do it. When japanese seiyuu set out to record a track for a show (almost always) they are all present, and they act out thier lines at the same time. Actually looking at each other and feeding off of one another. When shows are dubbed in english (the majority of the time) it is one actor by his/her self just reading a line off of a paper. It really loses alot that way.

A good point. From what (little) I've seen Japanese recording is done just like a radio play. In essence, they are acting. Surely some of the better companies use this approach for an English dub?

Nice, i love it when people like to point to 1 or 2 serie's/movie's, when there are heuuuu ... 2000+?? who arent the exeption of the rule?

Your way of using 1 or 2 serie's as way's to justify your opinion doesent fly here ... 99.9% of the anime is originaly Japanese voice acting. Trying to use a 0.1% as a excuse is flawed logic.

Most Japanese Voice acting are better then there dub counterpart's. It's bad to see some texas cowboy voice trying to act like a samurai ... jikes ...

There have been only a few serie's where the dub was on the same level as the original japanese ( hellsing is one of them ). It's funny to hear things like "the Butler sounds like a badass in english where as in the Japanese he sounds a little wimpy". People kinde forget that the butler is a servent. A servent thats sounds "like a badass" ... hmmm ... Did somebody already notice the culture difference between the producer & the dub makers??

I also find it funny to read in this trait, that becouse you can't understand Japanese, that means you can't understand the emotion that the voice acters put behind there character ( i've seen this argument a lot of time's from ignorent dub watchers )... When you don't like to lisen to a non english lang., what the voice acter say will ALL sounds the same to the lisseners. I made this bold just so people won't look past it. It's only when you TRY to apprisiate a lang. that you notice the difference's between the emotion's expressed by the actors. And this is something that is rarly done by 100% dub watchers ...

The same with the sub reading argument, that is use so many time's ... you DON't lose your top half of your screen when watching subs. When you only watch subs a few time's in your life, ofcourse your eye's will focus on the underside of the screen, becouse they arent used to it!!! Try watching a few serie's with subs ... FORCE yourself to watch them, and you will notice after a few eps, that you won't have so mutch trouble with sub wachting & "losing the entire picture". After a while, you get used to it. We sub watchers are in most case's doing this for years already. We can focus our eye's, in a way that we see the entire picture & the subs, widout the need to keep our eye's focused on those subs .. It's all in training ...

Again, this all come's down to 1 thing in my eye's:

People are lazy.

They are used to dub's, and the effort of trying to view a non-native lang. is to hard for them. Then all the excuses come from "not seeing the entire picture", 'japanese sounds all the same' etc etc ...

Side note: 100% sub users also have that flaw ( i for one can't stand most dubs becouse they all sounds like some guy from texas did the voice dubbing (aka, to mutch US english accent in the dubbing )) and this breaks the realism of the serie for me.

So it all come's down to how open your mind is, how your tast is, and how your country is a dub / sub country. That's it...

All these dub vs sub discussion's are WORTHLESS!!!! It's all a pathetic attempty by all people to try & justify there own preference over other people. End of story.
