Believe me hentai has been around for a while
I think Urotsukidoji actually came out in the mid 80s.
The main reason you only remember animes like Dirty Pair is cuz the only things available in the US in the early 90s were old school stuff Akira, Robotech, Galaxy Express 999, etc.

Ya know, funny that you guys should mention the Dirty Pair, the first anime feature that I ever bought was the old Streamline release of Dirty Pair- Affair On Norlandia, I still have it and thought and still think it was so cool when I watched it. By the way, I think the original dub is far superior the ADV rerelease that came out a few months ago.
I love anime-but I still have a life-but not by choice......?

Anime sales in the US has doubled in the past year, i consider that a definite jump into the mainstream. Manga has also grown extremely popular, i've watched stores grow from a tiny little shelf to entire bookcases full now complete with t-shirts and posters. I like the idea but some "otaku hardcore anime fans" think that their property is being overrun or whatever, but i don't think that. Hopefull anime becomes more and more popular so the domestic DVDs will become more and more cheaper.

I sure hope tthat domestic anime dvds will become cheaper, kinda seems like a pipe dream to me, we'll just have to wait and see, I guess.
