Well it's more of a title thing than anything else.... In Japan you have to remeber that your Sure name is know to a select few, (close friends & family) So you are called by your last name. So for him to call him self D is fitting because if asked what is your name and not whating all to know his heritage calling himself "D" is the perfect stand in.

As for the copy rights only company holds name frights on thier vampiers and that is White Wolf. The Common names are free to all use like "Dracula, Alucard, & Kain" I hope I helped
